Thyroid problem??

Quote  |  Reply
The doctor told me today I have a thyroid problem. In the past six months Ive been sooooo tired, gained 10 pounds, and my previously tough as steel nails and hair has turned brittle broken and dry.......is anyone else experiencing a thyroid problem ?

I'm only 31 so I'm slightly shocked.

Wondering if there are any ways to help it, meaning vitamins, foods, etc that anyone knows about?

I'm just curious, didn't the doctor tell you how to "fix" it?
Yeah...they need to put me on T-3 or T-4 hormones.....but I need to have more blood work early part of the week for them to decide.....I was wondering anything besides medicine.....although I realize I need drugs to fix it.....I just want to assist it naturally as well
Oh, ok, I just wondered because I thought maybe your doctor didn't say anything and was letting you fend for yourself, which wouldn't surprise me nowdays. I'm ALL for healing naturally and holistically. I heal myself (and some others) that way all the time -- just on my own with stuff I learned from reading. I haven't read up on Thyroid though, but more power to you!
I'm trying to convince my bf to go and get his checked.  He isn't gaining weight because that's just his build but he's be tired lately, has a bump in the gland area, brittle nails, low sex drive (i know...frustrating)....he is convinced that it is not that, but I still think it's worth it to get it checked.  What do you think?
Yeah, come to think about it I have a very low sex drive.....and I'm exhausted. I was just blaming everything on being lazy.
Hi dandy!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 7 years ago.  I am 47 years old.  Like you, I was shocked and very frightened the day my doctor gave me my diagnosis.  Please listen carefully - there is no need to be afraid of this disease because it is manageable and does not need to infringe on your enjoyment of life.

I did a quick search of the forums here and came up with the following posts you might want to check out:

There are lots more posts here - the above are only a few.  Once you learn a bit more about the disease, you will realize that it is controllable BUT you cannot ignore it.  You will have to watch your diet because our metabolisms are slower.  You will have to put extra conditioner in your hair (that was the first spot I noticed something different going on - brittle hair) and more moisturizers everywhere! You will learn as you go.

Do not be frightened of this disease.  Do be respectful of this disease.

If you have any questions, I will help you if I can.  Just ask.
im interested in any more information anyone can provide on the thyroid! i actually had my blood taken today for tests for a thyroid problem. i also havent had my period since january (and no, i am not pregnant, lol).
I found a really great booklet from the American Thyroid Association.

Here's the link, if you'd like to read it: http://www.thyroid.org/patients/brochures/Hyp othyroidism%20_web_booklet.pdf

In case it doesn't work for you, copy/paste the following into Google:

"american thyorid association" booklet

The first result will be the link to the pdf.
