Okay, I have been dieting (not calorie counting but certainly cutting my calories) and exercising for a solid three months. I exercise usually 5 days a week for about an hour or so a day, rotating cardio and weight training. I also just hired a personal trainer to help. Not only that but I also tried those diet pills that are prescribed by your doctor. Sad to say I have not lost ONE pound!!
My trainer is saying that it may be my thyroid. I have done some research online and I have some of the symtoms. I was wondering if anyone has had this type of obstacle and if there are any home remedies that I could try?
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Health and Support
I have hypothyrodism, and there are no home remedies. I have to take Synthroid daily for the rest of my life
I lost 12 lbs in 3 week b4 I started the pills so I guess I dont have too much trouble losing but I do gain extremly fast...go see your dr.

Ditto.
I lose weight just fine with it. All you have to do is go to a doctor and get a blood test to see if you have it.
If it is your thyroid, you need to get on the hormone therapy (pills) as soon as possible. Only your doctor and blood work can tell you for sure. It took me several years to find out I was hypothyroid, and by the time I did, I was really sick. Don't let that happen to you!
I'm on thyroid pills (over 2 years), and I still find it VERY, VERY hard to lose any weight. I have lost a few inches, but not one pound!!
Are your clothes fitting any differently? Perhaps you've replaced some fat with some muscle which could account for no change on the scale. If that's the case, you would have shrunk at least a little - track your measurements to be sure, but definitely see your doctor! It's a struggle to keep going, but as your clothes get looser, you'll know that SOMETHING must be changing.
Thank you all so much. I know that I need to get to the doctor to get checked out. I was just hoping that there might be a more natural way to balance it out.
What kind of diet pills were they? Did they even check your tyroid before you started those pills...I know the DR. would not prescribe me any because they mess with you thyroid and There is a history of thyroid problems in my family
If you aren't calorie counting there is no way to know if you are under or over eating. Before you jump to conclusions, I would start a diet journal and see what you're actually eating.
I have stage two papillary thyroid cancer, I had a total thyroidectamy so I no longer have a thyroid and also have to take synthroid for the rest of my life. There are no over the counter or at home remedies for thyroid problems. Seeing your doctor for a blood test is fairly easy and your doctor will help you get back on track if there is a problem. I too, have not seen that much trouble in losing weight (if I can stick to it) however I gain weight much faster than before the surgery. The trouble with losing weight could very well be your thyroid it affects everyone differently, the best way to tell is to start calorie counting and make an appointment with your doctor.
You really need to get checked.
I have hypothyroidism and am on synthroid but lose sooo slowly... and gain really fast!
for those of you that are on the pills what is your bloodword showing?
I think my t-4? levels are still too high , at like 3.0... or so. I want the doc to up my meds so that it drops lower since I have so much to lose and its so hard.
I think my script is .125 mg.
I lost 60 pounds with diet and exercise after I found out about my thyroid.
Several years ago my thyroid went out of whack again and I gained back 20 pounds.
Go to your doctor and get a blood test. Make sure you ask for the results because although it may show in the "normal range" but could be a bit high.
Could be your thyroid, i have alot of trouble in the past with gaining with not really eating that much but when i started watching my portion control and not eating out as much i have been losing. I am eating healthier (salads etc, chicken, turkey, veggies, fruit) and i have successfully lost about 50 pounds since January!! :) I really didnt realize how much i was eating before probably in the neighborhood of 2500 calories daily and was exercising and not losing. Since i watch portions now and exercising an hour daily (just walking) i have managed to lose that 50 pounds since January!! SO just do a food journal and see exactly how much calories you are eating. Used to i would fill my plate up with spaghetti and (it was in reality probably 2 servings) and i would eat that and go back for seconds so who knows i was probably eating more than the 2500 (now i know why i wasn't losing weight) and i DO have a low thryoid problem. I dont make enough hormone. It wouldnt hurt to have it checked. Good luck!!

Thank you all soo much. Congratulations on the many of you who have dropped considerable weight. After talking to my trainer I am going on a strict meal plan and going to the doc to get tested. All your support is greatly appreciated!!
For Chattynoel, you need to get your thyroid checked. Unchecked can lead to depression, and the longer it goes unchecked could eventually lead into chronic depression. I was tired ALL the time, gained like 25 pounds in one month without changing my eating habits, and was depressed. I thought I was crazy and didn't want to go to the doctor because I was afraid he would prescribe anti-depressents. Finally my husband dragged me to the doctor and she took one look at me and said it was my thyroid. After 6 months I regained all my energy and wasn't depressed at all! Now, after 5 years of meds, I am on a combo T3/T4 pill and it really works for me.
If you have thyroid problems, it'll be a little harder to lose weight, but there are lots of websites with information on what to eat and what not to, in relation to your thyroid. Like corn is not good for us, and a soy milk is a HUGE no no. It can lead to thyroid problems, which I didn't know!
Is there a free clinic that you can look for? I'm in Germany where doctors are not expensive if you don''t have insurance, but I remember being in New York without, and I found cheap doctors to do blood workups. IT'S DEFINATELY WORTH IT. You can ruin your body (and brain) without the proper meds. But you have to keep getting your blood checked for the first year to make sure your levels are steady.
I will get back to you on the results.
Ok, I got the Thyroid Panel done. My result was TSH of 1.3 so I am in the Normal range. The only other thing that I can think of, is the my Anemia is all out of wack again. So I got a B-12 shot yesterday, took iron supplement today plus I ate foods high in iron today. Hopefully by the end of the week I will be feeling back to normal. Today I actually had a day off and all I wanted to do is sleep (although I had too much to do, to enable this.) I did get to sleep in a little though.
Hi, I couldnt help but notice that you just got a tsh. You need to also get a t3 and t4. Just because your tsh comes back normal doesn't mean that your t3 or t4 will. I had a tsh done and it was within normal range. I insisted on them doing a t3 and t4 because of all my symptoms and it runs in my family. They did and today they called back and i was right. My free t4 (that the name of it) came back low. My t3 was fine. I have to start on synthroid. I cant wait to get back to normal. I am tired all the time, losing hair, depressed...etc.... So if i were you please get a t3 and t4 done.
That's frustrating, they only do the Ft4 if the tsh were out of the normal range! It would have been done at no charge if the tsh was out of wack. Now I have to go back in, and they will charge me for it. Bummer!
That is a bummer but its better that you do get checked just in case. I have to go back in 1 month to have mine rechecked to see what my counts are to see if they need to adjust my synthroid. I also had a sonogram done on my thyroid and i have a nodule that is 6mm and have to go back in and have it rechecked in 4-6 months. I just cant wait until this starts to take affect (3-4 months) so i can get back to normal. Good Luck!!
I'm actually getting a few tests done this Thursday, one of which will be checking my thyroid. At first I didn't think anything of it, but then I realized this could be the cause of my depression, my low tolerance for cold weather, and my GAIN after upping my cals to what should be ideal for a teen looking to lose weight.
It's a good idea to have it checked, at any rate. Even if you have the slightest notion that there may be a problem.
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
