I had my thyroid taken out last May due to hyperthyroidism - and medication not working for it. I almost wish I didn't do it as now I am hyPO and that stinks! I was much happier with losing weight; although having the constant shaking of my hands and nervous energy was a distraction to all those around me! I will say that I am glad I had it done because what having the hyperthyroid was doing to mess up my system was leachign all my calcium from my body, which caused me to have osteopenia. If it's not one thing, it's another! Fortunately since I am fairly young, 34, it was reversible and I've had two bone scans, the last which revealed I'm steadily regaining density!
Sorry...this is about weight loss and not my own personal medical history but thought I would share! Now over a year later and many pounds heavier, I've realized I can't just eat like I used to and now I really need to watch my intake and exercise. I'm currently 160 pounds and would like to be back at 135. My goal is December.
I would like to hear others stories on how their lack of a thyroid has affected them; physically, emotionally, mentally! I am taking Synthroid at 125 dose.
I had a thyroidectomy due to goiter with malignant cancer & hypothyroidism back in 1992. I've lost 17 lbs. with the help of CC so far.
hi i had my thyriod removed in jan 07 because of graves, they also took 2 calcuim glands away at the same time, the staff on the ward messed up with my medication and i became very ill, landing up having to stay in hospital for 10 days on a calcuim drip, i still have to take a high dose of calcuim everyday but we were getting it under control, sadly i gained nearly 2 stone in weight after the op, so last year i joined weight watchers and was doing really well i lost enough to be healthy again but sadly it has got out of hand and ive just been told im anorexic, im 5ft 7 and weigh 114lbs my bmi is 17.9, im getting help for my eating but its so hard, im still eating what i was, i can bring myself to eat anything more, which i know i need to, im finding it hard to do everyday things like having a bath, walking down and up stairs, i can drive at the moment, ive been signed off work, i want so badly to feel well again, but i still cant bring myself to eat anything more.
lucy xx
There's a Thyroid disease Group forming here at CC! You can find it under the new Groups tag in the menu bar, but here's a direct link.
