Time change will be happening in a couple of months. What will you do then?

Quote  |  Reply

I have been able to come up with quite a few activities to get some exercise but besides the gym they are all outside.  Once the time changes, by the time I get home it will be close to dark.   Just wondering what kinds of exercise everyone else will be doing once it starts getting dark earlier.  (Aside from the gym of course.)

I have weights at home and I have a bike (which bores me). A few days ago I went out and got a decent treadmill. I'm doing the C25k on it, so far so good..

Gives me something to do when its raining, and once winter gets here..

Aww man I didn't even think about that!!! So it'll get darker earlier? if I can fit into my schedule, I'll just try to wait until it's light outside to go running. THe heat won't really be any issue in October; the issue will just be if I have time to fit in a later run and still get to school/work on time.

As much as I love living in Northern Scotland, and the long hours of light in the summer, you've reminded me that yes, in the not too distant future we will indeed be back to DARKNESS for 6 months solid.

Oh man Cry

I must admit I kinda hit hibernation mode when it comes to November-December here as it's just so grim out...and my gym membership probably gets a disproportionate use in the winter, of course.

But all the way up into autumn I switch my running habits to lunchtime, instead of after work etc. Depending on the weather.

Oh I'm sad now, try and make the most of the daylight while we still have it! haha

What is the issue with working out when it is dark?

Seems mor like an excuse than an issue?

I can only speak personally as I run more outdoors, but I'm less inclined to run around the streets after 6pm in winter as a personal safety precaution.

Also when it gets icy (November-Feb here and this last year gone was REALLY bad), I dont want to break my neck running unless it's a warmer day.

Unfortunately we arent all blessed with a wage packet that means we can afford regular gym membership, so yeah, my personal winter regime does generally suffer, but then I seem to eat less crap and more wholesome warm filling stews, bean casseroles etc, so it balances out over the year.

As a female we can't exercise outside after dark due to safety precautions.

No, I will not be exercising outside once it gets dark and here in southern AL, it's dark as night by 5:30pm!

I will stick to jump rope, the Wii Fit and if I can convince my husband, either a bike or treadmill.

lighted track.

We all make our own decisions.last I checked my wife is a lady and she sticks to her 6 miles a day dark cold or not in we are in the North

I was actually assaulted while running in the dark a few years ago. If the dck-wad was here right now, he could attest that anyone that messes with me will be in serious pain. I may look tiny but I'm strong as hell and kicked [and punched] the sh.... t out of him. [He actually had a police escorted ambulance ride to the hospital]. :p

So either you live in a safer area than a lot of other people, or your wife has a higher risk tolerance than others. What's your point? Depending on where you live, running after dark could be perfectly safe or asking for trouble or just plain stupid.

It's kinda obnoxious for you to insist that people choosing not to put themselves in harm's way is an excuse or cop out.

Even if crime isn't an issue, there are plenty of reasons to worry about running at dark - my aunt went running pre-dawn, didn't realize that under the pile of leaves were a bunch of cut tree limbs, and ended up permanently wrecking her knee. It was early enough that nobody was out, my uncle was still asleep.... fortunately the paper delivery guy drove by, and it had gotten light enough that he saw her.

This is why the women here is Philly don't run after dark...they still haven't caught the guy who killed 1/raped another /attacked and slashed a 3rd woman (who got away fortunately)/raped a 4th - -and it was only 'dusk' in these scenarios. And spread out across the city.

And there was another unrelated attack on a runner yesterday - and it was still daylight.

Yes, we all make choices.  But it is common standard advice for women not to run in the dark, ever. Period.  No debate. There are countless stories across the country with similar attacks - its just a high risk decision. I too will assume the best and that you live in a very 'safe' area, but it doesn't apply to the majority of the population.   And I would need to drive at least half an hour to the closest lighted track - -again, urban situations are a little different - our local high school can't afford such 'luxuries'.
