I am a new calcounter and feel this handy little tool will help me with my goal.  I recently learned that I have to lose 160 lbs to be an adequate weight for my hieght.  My doctor actually reccommended I get the gastric bypass but my family will freak out if I tell them I qaulify for this procedure.  I mean they know I am overweight but not that serious.  I would only get it to lose weight for appearance and emotional well being because my trip to the doctor was the old good news bad news.  Your very healthy but morbidly overweight.  She has no ideal why and neither do I.  I have a vicious weight loss battle ahead of me.  Could use all of the support I can get.

hi there nhberry!  :)

a little over one year ago (a year and a month actually) i was given the same news!  lose weight or have the bypass.. since i flat out refused to have the surgery EVER  i decided, like you, it was time to get serious.  I had over 184 pounds to lose.  i've lost 110 of them (but on a super huge nasty plateau i *think* caused by my hypothyroidism.. gotta get that checked again)

welcome aboard and you can so do this!  anyone can!  that's the secret that no one will tell you.. weight loss is possible without gimmicks, or special pills, or special anything.. just good old fasioned hard work lower calories and exercise.. that's all it takes!

no problem
I'm curious, nhberry, what have you been doing in the way of activities to keep yourself healthy in spite of the weight gains?
You can do this!  Make mini-goals rather than looking at the whole amount you have to lose.  Do it five or ten pounds at time.  Make changes one at a time and in increments you can live with.  I started with a goal of going to the gym three days a week.  That was reasonable and reachable goal.  I am up to five days a week, but my goal is still at least three days a week.

I have to lose a total of 108 lbs. to have a healthy BMI (body mass index).  Fifty-seven of those pounds are now gone!  I've been doing this since June of last year, so this is not a quick weight loss scheme.

Losing the weight helped me kick the high blood pressure and asthma medications.  I have also started running just over a month ago and will be entering my first 5K race in two weeks.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be running races at 43 years of age.  Best of luck to you, a great adventure awaits! ~Kay

Believe it or not manewell I go to Jazzercise 3 to 4 days a week and dance.  If not for this I would weigh more than 300 lbs.  For me it is more than exercise it is just plain old bad dieting.  I think just because I exercise regulary I can eat anything I want but I can't.  I am putting in more than I am working off.  So the goal is now to calcount and see if I can smooth things out and reach a goal weight.

kscout, that is my biggest goal.........running.  If I can get the courage to get out there and run I will be soooooooo happy.  It is another goal of mine.  Only one new thing at a time, don't want to overwhelm myself as I do have other things in life i.e. job, family, etc.
Wow, great doctor - offered to cut you up to "help" you. Didn't she recommend a diet program, pills, hypnosis, psychiatry, anything less drastic first?

I started doing calorie count in October with over 100 lbs to loose and I am down 38 lbs so far. Calorie count is a great tool to keep you on track.

Since I knew I was weak in will power for this go around I asked my doctor to prescribe me an appetite suppressant and it really helped me through the first couple of months of adjusting to a new healthy eating lifestyle. I don't take it anymore but it really helped at that crucial 3 week rebound point.

I know for me I made a mind set that I was going to eat like all my skinny acquaintances and friends. They didn't have a big mac combo meal at lunch, they had a salad. They didn't clean their plate at dinners out, they took home more than half in a box.

I started going to the gym a couple of times a week and now average about 4 times a week. I do both cardio and weight lifting.

I also read a few trainer/fitness blogs, body builder, and body transformation websites to get tips and inspiration.

I take it 2 lbs at a time. I don't think of the 100+ number I am going for. I have my skinny jeans hanging in the closet waiting for me where I can look at them every now and then. I take my measurements every 4 weeks.

I also eat whatever I want -  but I eat a lot less.  However, I make sure to track every bite and "pay" for indulgences at the gym if I go over. (for instance I used to have fries 3x a week but now I have them once a week or less)

Good luck - it is all mind over matter. You can do it!

The problem with gastric by pass is that you must change your eating habits or the weight will come back on. Why have surgery and make MAJOR life changes risk the rest of your life with health issues related to the surgery if you are
A) not in any medical danger now

B) if you can change your eating and exercise habits  then why have the surgery...

Doctors are handing out this surgery left and right... the reality is that we do not know the long term effects of it yet... Why risk your health if you do not have any health issues...

I have 100lbs to loose... I was always trim but my mother got sick and passed... I ate my way it an excess of 100lbs.... sometimes I feel helpless like I will never get it under control... but then I get on the eleptical for  a half an hour... When ever I feel bad... I ask myself Why

what is bothering you...

People do not gain that much weight because they have no self control... there is something else motivating the eating...

Best of luck to you....

I have lost 4 of my 100 lbs... that is 4%

Nicci

Carolyn

that is what I did...

got counseling about why I gained so much weight..

made sure that there was no underlying heath issues...

and joined calorie count...

I am down 4 lbs....

but more than that...

eating better I feel better..

being more active... I feel better...

with calorie count it has helped me realize that in the past when I dieted... I was not eating enough... so i sent my body into starvation... it is a delicate balance eating right... I find that most days I am unable to eat the entire 2700 calories that I am supposed to take in ( I am very active) but I work at it...

I want my body to be healthy no a size 0 but healthy... that is the most important thing.... at a healthy weight I fit into my size 8 skinny jeans... for me that is 145 lbs...I am a very large frame 5'1" and when I have attempted to drop below that you could see bones.... and I had to starve myself... My nutritionist said that given my body type that is acceptable for me.

Hi, I recently came across a brand new product that is being marketed as an alternative to gastric bypass, it works the same way, without surgery or side effects. It is called FORM and it helps suppress your appetite. When you take it, it expands in your stomach, causing you to feel full. Americans as a whole have a difficult time with portion control, and I know that has always been my problem. There is also a meal replacement shake, called FIXX, which is great for making sure that you are eating and getting your nutrition throughout the day. I often miss meals during the day, because I am so busy, and that just sabotages my weight loss, so this shake is perfect! I have a ton of information that I could send you, or anyone else who is interested. Feel free to email me anytime!!
