Time of Day vs. Below Minimum Calories
All right common knowledge is not to eat dinner later than 7pm or some such thing. We also have minimum caloric intakes to consider. Add that I do shift work which confuses everything sometimes. Men are told to make sure they do not go below 1500 calories a day. This site recommends for me 2200 a day for losing 1.5 lbs. So if I am around 1500 and its getting late in the day should I not eat or eat something getting me closer to 1800 or 1900 calories?
"Don't eat after 6/7/8/9pm" is pretty cruddy advice. =P It doesn't matter so much WHEN you eat, as to how much you eat on average. Eating around 300 calories an hour before bed won't make a a large difference.
If it makes you feel better, I eat at least 1800+ calories a day, and a big bowl of oatmeal about 10 minutes before bed - and I'm still underweight! =) Hehe.
I am fairly new at this but I have been losing for the last three weeks. I seldom eat dinner before seven and I eat a snack before bed also. I am not sure when I eat makes a difference but I am very careful not to go over my set calories for the day and I always eat breakfast.
I have lost 14 lbs in the last three weeks or so doing this, so I don't plan to change. I try to stay focused on doing my exercises for the day, eating healthy and within my calorie limit or below. If I am hungry at bedtime and I have some calories left, I eat. If I don't have calories left, I don't eat. If I am not hungry, I don't eat. I try and keep it that simple.
If you keep within your calories, you will lose weight. Good luck to you.
The "don't eat after 7 pm rule" is unadulterated hogwash. And if you are working shift work, it really doesn't make sense at all. The only reason not to eat before bedtime is if you can't sleep as a result.
Most of the time eating before a certain time fluctuates. I think the thing that matters is not eating big meals within 3 hours of bedtime since overnight your metabolism slows down and takes longer to break down those foods. But, it's also recommended to really chew your food, which helps break it down.
I usually save room for about 250 calories in desserts/snacks, usually jello, fruit, pudding or cereal...something healthy of course! However, I wait until my little one goes to sleep before I sit and fully enjoy it...which isn't until 8:00. Then I go to sleep at 9:00. I have not seen any difference vs eating my snacks earlier, exept I'm not starving right away when I wake up. ![]()
Thanks all it is kind of what I wanted to hear.
I work a wacky schedule and sometimes it's 10 PM and I am ravenous and only had about 900 calories for the day at that point. I'll definitely have a slice of toasted grain bread with a thin layer of peanut butter or apple butter on it or a piece of fruit. When I don't I usually feel pretty wiped out the next day, so I don't listen to the advice of not eating after 7 PM or whatever. I think it's important not to eat a ton of heavy calories before bed so you don't wake up feeling all blown out, so I try to limit what I'm eating to a max of 200 calories total.
