no time to work out

Quote  |  Reply

my days are usually pretty hectic: class all day, work til the evening, and either the gym is closed by then or i'm exhausted. i walk about 2 miles a day to school (but who knows how many calories that burns). even with moving around a bit during the day, i feel like that's not enough.

any advice to squeeze some work-outs in or motivation to exercise after a busy day?

I dont know where you take your classes, but is there a gym  in the building?

there is a gym on campus, but it closes pretty early. i wish i had time in between class & work to go, but 6 days out of the week i can't.

take a PE class.

thats how i squeezed in my workouts back when i was working, going to UT and raising two kids.

i took conditioning swimming every semester. it was my sanity!

Sounds to me like you have made other things your priority over getting a workout in.  People do what they want to do or in some cases what they need to do.  Examine your priorities and do what is is most important first.  If workouts are one of those things then figure it out.

Well, judging by the time stamps on your posts in this thread you had almost 10 minutes in between. You could have done a lot within those 10, even if it was in your home.

resistance bands are lightweight and easy to carry around.  You could use them while reading/studying, or when you need to take a breather.  Even 5 to 10 minutes here and there will make you feel better and likely give your brain an energy burst.  When I was in my final semester I would do a 30 minute stretching DVD or use the resistance bands as a break from manic writing.  it really helped to reenergize and keep from getting too stale.  good luck!

This reminds me. My boss and I started doing 20 push-ups at the beginning of every hour. Only takes like 30sec tops from dropping down to standing back up. Easy way to accomplish 180 push-ups for the work day. Even if you do less reps, it's still an easy way to exercise w/o breaking a sweat.

Learn to do isometric exercises. You can do them while in class, in church, any where.

Here's a funny story for you. I was sitting in a meeting next to one of the VP of my company. I did a half hour of iso ab crunch during the meeting. After the meeting, the VP told me that he was impressed that I was able to contribute to the meeting even though I was having a stomach upset. I guess he saw my stomach muscle movements. :)

2 miles to school burns is that just one way or both?  (for a 30y/o female 172lbs)

  • 40 min @ 3mph = 172 calories
  • 30 min @ 4mph =  195 calories

Go to the tab that says activities and find walking your number will be different then mine.

I'm assuming you have friends why not make a nightly walking group. (Are you in collage or high school?) You can rent DVD's too get a group share the cost and laugh as you do them.  Laughing burns calories too.

Non- workout exercise

  • bowling 234/hour
  • heavy cleaning (spring cleaning)  234/hour
  • vacuum 272/hour
  • apple picking (+ now you have snacks) 234/hour
  • shoveling snow (soon) 468/hour
  • ice skating 546/hour
  • downhill skiing 468/hour
  • cross country skiing 624/hour
  • sledding 546/hour
  • swimming crawl (50yd/min)  624/hour

See do any of these on a day off for a few hours and you have a great workout + a lot of fun.  No one made a rule that exercise has to be in a gym.
