Tips on ignoring food cravings!

Quote  |  Reply

I'm sure there will be loads of people out there like me who live in a house full of males; and as a result there are always loads of biscuits and choccy available to eat all over the house!

When I am desperate for some biscuits or something, I usually fill myself up on low calorie juice.

What do you all usually do when trying to ignore a craving?

It's the weirdest thing, but if you go and shave your legs, pluck your eyebrows, give yourself a facial, try different ways of putting on makeup, etc, you'll get the same high that you would with food... at least I do and it's awesome. You look better and you lose weight. What more could you want?

Just beware, grooming can be just as addicting as eating. lol

Hope that helps.
I drink a big glass of water... always works! :o)

I'm not quite in the same situation, but to me it is more of a mental thing than anything else. When I'm faced with eating something unhealthy I ask myself if the calories are worth it to my diet and if I'll be ok with myself the next day.  If the answer is yes to both then I eat the food.  If the answer is no to either then I resist, most of the time.  It was really hard at first but has become easier as I focus on my goals.

Example: at work they had a birthday party for a couple of people and I went to the party and completely ignored the 2 delicious cakes available.  A few days later it was my wifes birthday and I gladly ate birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate with her and her family.

wannabehott - omg, I think that's one of the best ideas I've ever heard for getting your mind off food.  I'm definately going to doll myself up the next time the Doritos are calling. ^__^
What I usually do is leave the room that has the food in it and concentrate on something else. Drinking water usually helps too.

I have substitute foods. If I really want a sweet thing, I will have an apple or a 100 calorie pack of Hershey's chocolate or sometimes a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich, followed by a cup of coffee. If I want a salty thing, I have rice cakes or a 100-calorie popcorn bag.

And if it is really, really bad, I will let myself earn the calories. I will get on the elliptical machine and go until I've used enough calories to whatever I wanted.

I love the grooming idea! Next time the biscuits are out I'm off upstairs to beautify myself lol.

I once heard frozen grapes are good when you get sugar cravings but i tried it and it was a load of rubbish :) !!

thanks girls keep the ideas coming x

i really like eating frozen nuts......it might sound weird but i keep a bag of pecans in the freezer, pull out a handful of nuts and just walk away from the kitchen, and i feel better. or i like to make green tea. plus its hot and keeps me warm!!
These are great ideas!

maybe you don't like frozen grapes, but frozen blueberries are super yummy.

If I need a 100 calorie snack i've found the small amounts in the 100 calorie pack just make me crave more! I love sugar free vanilla pudding with frozen fruit and a bit of sugar free coolwhip. It makes me feel good about my choice and fulfills that sweet craving.

Another thing I do to avoid the cravings is to watch the food channel. I don't want to go  to the effort to make any of those foods and its fun to watch.

look at pics of skinny celebrities and think how **** u are going to feel if you eat those crappy cravings, also read the ingridients it will make ur head spin how much **** those things have ;)
If it gets bad I drink a glass of lemon water down, that normally does it, but if it continues I'll get on the elliptical. Working out always makes my hunger go away. I'm normally good after that.

i often make myself a cup of tea cos it fills you up and its only 15 calories the way i have it.

i'm allergic to nuts but the frozen berries sound nice!

thankuu x

I eat some more healthful snack and to ensure this I always keep a variety of healthy-ish snacks around and I keep switching them up so I don't get bored. Also, I never allow myself to get starving hungry as that is normally when I make poor decisions. Keeping yourself fairly satiated at all times with healthful snacks was one of the major reasons for my success.

I'm a tea drinker, also. Usually I'm just looking for something to do since I grab a snack when I get home out of habit, so the act of making hot water, brewing the tea, adding my fake suger (and a touch of real sugar to fake myself out) and the cream makes it a snack that's no more than 50 cals (depending on how much sugar I put in) and lasts for nearly an hour since I'm a slow drinker. I do this at coffee shops too for studying.

And I love the grooming idea also! Nice! And my eyebrows really need plucked...

i like to take a walk or exercise.  drinking water also helps or some kind of cleaning.  maybe do the dishes instead of eating

another thing is, hold off for a day or two (at least) and if you still want whatever it is that you've been craving, go ahead & have it...  but stay within your calorie limit if possible

If you play a musical instrument, grab that baby and crank out some licks! ;) I find that playing my guitar, especially writing (or trying to) write a song of my own really helps.  It takes the focus off of food, and plus my hands are busy so I can't snack.

why do the pecans need to be frozen?

well for me.. today in our class each one brought food and let me tell you.. there was alot of junk! and in my house we dont usually have those stuff.. my mom tries to avoid getting us chips sodas and all the junk food.. so it took ALOT of power not to eat.. but if i am craving something i wont like ignore it.. so i just took 3, 4 pieces of potato chips from my friend's pack.. i did satisfy my craving because i havent eaten chips in weeks. and i also drink water but none of these low calorie sweets because they'll just make me crave even more of the junk food i want.

I make myself a cup of coffee. I have a pod coffee maker which does one cup at a time, so each cup of coffee gets its own little routine.  I use the Splenda flavored stuff in it if I'm craving sweets.   Usually, by the time I've finished making and savoring the cup of coffee, I've long forgotten whatever it was that I was originally craving.

Plus, the heat, strong flavor, and caffiene all help too.

I find cutting up and apple and drinking a big glass of water will fill me up... and if that doesn't work I will go for a walk with the dog. However....I don't deny myself treats.  It has to fit into my calorie intake, after a good week of eating right and working out i allow myself to have some ice cream or chocolate. They say if you neglect your cravings completly they will only become stronger so best to have a little to satisfy yourself. However knowing that on Friday I can have desert after a healthy dinner usually makes getting through the week farely easily.  :)

Hope this helps
