i think i've finally figured out that my binges are triggered by bad emotions; sadness, anger, hurt, etc.

now that i know this, how do i stop it?

give me some tips and/or ideas on how to deal with my emotions not through food.

If you can't help but use food as a release, try to have it be something that you can eat very slowly.

This may be an obvious answer, but exercise is a great way to release your emotions without eating. The more emo you are, the harder you'll probably work out, and therefore, the more affective it should be.

Make sure it's non-compensatory and not related to food, whatever you do. Write, sing, call a friend, take a slow walk, do some silly dancing, paint, draw, play with a pet, clean, blog, post here. You could try taking up a hobby like knitting too.

perhaps as soon as you're feeling crappy and realize that you want food, get out a journal.  write out your thoughts and what EXACTLY is making you feel bad.  then write out how you don't want to hurt yourself more by binging - instead, brainstorm solutions to the problem or at least get your feelings out on paper. hope this helps

Firstly, congrats on figuring out what causes your bingeing! Thats such a crucial step to putting an end to bingeing.

Now that you know what triggers your bingeing, you will find it a bit easier to control those cravings! What I used to do, is go for a walk and stay FAR away from the kitchen. As well, I would chew gum to keep my mouth occupied! Find a hobby, a friend who likes to talk a lot. Anything but food

good luck!

Overeaters anonymous uses the acronym HALT:  Are you HUNGRY, ANGRY, LONELY or TIRED?  I find myself thinking that when I want to eat for other reasons.  It doesn't always help, but sometimes it does...

I'm in the same boat as you, except it's even worse because I ALSO binge when I'm happy/excited about something.  It's like the only time I can control myself is when I'm just feeling average/mediocre.  It's like an out of body experience when it happens, then it's over and I feel horrible!!  I keep track on CC and see the things that I *binge* on, then I literally throw them away.  It's like every day I find something new!

Anyway, just know that you're not alone in this.  I'm looking for all the support/advice I can get right now.  I'm totally confused as to why I let myself do this!!

The first thing is to asses your diet, and make sure you are getting enough carbohydrate/protein/fat and calories.

EVEN IF you get enough calories, if your protein/fat/and carbohydrate intake is unbalanced, then you could STILL get cravings that make you want to binge eat.

Lacking carbohydrates was a trigger for me, if my body lacked carbohydrates then I would crave them.

Lack of protein made me feel like peanut/almond butter ( PEANUT/almond BUTTER = MAJOR binge food!!!!! ) I have gone through whole tubs!

SO, the only way for you to find out what the ideal amount of carbohydrates/protein/fat are for you is to TRY IT OUT to see what feels best!

Once I felt satisfied that my body was getting what it needed, I stopped craving certain foods

If your body needs something it will feel like binging on it, AS WELL as the emotional side.

The emotional reasons COMBINED with physical needs to binge are a deadly combination

Once I eliminated the physical urge to binge, the emotional urges were not as strong alone then they were combine with my bodies genuine need for certain foods.
