tired and depressed

Quote  |  Reply
I wake up every day with the same thinking, trying to eat as less as possible and exercise as much as possible. I have been like that during the past two years and dont loose a pound. Always tired, depressed, without motivation to do nothing and the worst, even gaining weight.

I alwayssurvive onsalads, skim milk and nutri grain bars. try to go to the gym (not too often because i end up being really hungry and eating more).

I´m tired of living like this and also not feeling well with myself. None of my clothes fit now but I refuse to buy new ones until I loose some weight, which never happens.

Can anyone please help???

hey dude/dudette,

Slow it down and concentrate specifically on what you are doing. Also take in to consideration what you are now and how it has been in the past. I can relate to your situation and I'm sure a lot of us can. The good thing is you've started talking/thinking about it. Now its time to change it into something positive. And you will do it. Post us more details and take us through in super slo motion ..kinda like Keanu Reaves watching the Bullet in the Matrix :)
you are not losing weight b/c you are in starvation mode.  you need to increase your calories in order to lose weight (probably to around 1600 at least if you are exercising - it would be helpful if you'd post your stats, age, etc. so people could give more advice.).
You need to go to the doctor and seek treatment for your depression. The rest will follow. All the best to you.

can starvation mode make you gain weight? i survive most of the days with coffee and milk and im gaining weight which makes me aafraid of eating because then I will gain more weight.
I have tried increasing my calorie intake and havent lost anyway. it seems like my body just cant loose weight right now. What i dont understand its why im struggling so much if im not loosing weight and why i m not living a normal life like everyone, i can never have more than one meal a day.
if you're in starvation mode right now, increasing your calories to bring yourself out of it will initially make you gain weight.  starvation mode slows down your metabolism and it's going to take a little while of eating enough (the 1600 a day is a good suggestion if you're female) to get your metabolism back on track.  (the slowing is caused by your body wanting to hold on to every last calorie because it's starving and doesn't know when it will get more.  the weight you gain back intially will also be primarily fat.  however, if you are in starvation mode, anything you burn is coming out of your lean muscle mass and NOT your fat stores.  therefore it is really important to get out of starvation mode and try to rebuild your muscle mass, which won't be easy).  use the tools here to find out how much you expend by just existing, and you can see how much of a deficit 1600 daily gives you for the week (and therefore see how much weight you would lose).  Just realize that coming out of starvation mode will make you gain weight initially, but in the long run, you will be able to lose weight, and do it the healthy way.

This is what i've read in the different threads around here about starvation mode (search around some, there are many).  I would also sincerely suggest seeing a doctor, nutritionist, and psychologist for help with your health in general, eating habits, and depression.
You just found us yesterday. From your post, you have a lot of self education to do to understand proper nutrition and health. Once you master that, I think you will see a huge difference in your attitude, motivation and weight goals.

Take some time to learn how to use the tools here which will help you determine how much you should be eating, and how the exercise your doing impacts your calorie intake. It sounds like your doing too much and too little all at the same time. Too little calories to maintain your health causing depression and low energy, too much exercise for the amount of food your eating causin your body to go into starvation causing further energy depletion.

You need balance. Too much or too little of anything produces adverse side effects.
Hey honey, to me you sound really depressed. My MIL suffers from depressions, and she's just started a new cycle of treatments. Go see you GP , I'm sure he/she can help you. There is no shame in having a depression, but do get some help! There are some meds out there working wonders for my MIL:::::
See a doctor and get tested for hypothyroidism. It slows your metabolism way down. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself the luxury of going as slowly as you need to.
I made the same mistake as you did, thinking that the only way to lose weight was to starve.  I'd gotten fat during menopause and after and tried every diet you can think of, all with the same results.  I'd lose some weight, then stop losing, try to eat less and less, until I was starving with no effect, then I'd give up and gain it all back.

When I found CC I was trying to stick to a 900 calorie diet and needed an online calorie counter.

What a revelation!  So many friendly people who had already lost a lot of weight, and a bunch of people who were keeping it off, all giving me advice.

When trying to explain to me what I was doing wrong, someone pointed me to this article

Dieting & Metabolism

I hope it helps you as much as it helped me!
Exactly as everyone is saying.
#1 - you have to eat to lose, period!  I have ALWAYS been a starver with every diet I have ever been on.  Now, I eat very healthily (if thats a word) and have lost 62 pounds since the end of February.  EAT!  Do all the tools that this site offers.
#2 - As Hestia said, I too highly recommend getting your thyroid checked.  I was depressed when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  It can only help.
Good luck, hon.  This site is great.
thank you so much guys, you have really cheered me up. Its fantastic the feeling of having people listening to you and trying to help you.

Definitly my problem loosing weight is related with my obsession and depression.

Im really forcing myself to still go out even if my pants dont fit (I will just wear a dress)and feeling allowed to enjoy life even if im a little bit heavier.

have been going to the gym lately and feeling much better so far.

havent noticed any weight loss but at least i havent been so obssesed about it and had a wonderful weekend so far w friends.

just hope that this continues because usually I go from happy to depressed in a matter of seconds. i want to get my mood more stable....
At least you have admitted to yourself that you are depressed.  It took me 35 years of self-denial to admit that I needed help.  I got it.  I am medicated and it works.  Take care of yourself first.  The underlying reason for your depression may not have anything to do with your eating habits.  Talk to a good doctor you trust.  Good Luck!
