toast toppings. I need healthy ideas quick please :) thanks
I cut bread from my diet and want to start bringing it back in so i'm on low cal bread but problem is apart from cheese (high in cals and fat) and jam (my jam is low cal but high sugar) i can't think of what to put on it.
Anyone got any ideas that could help me out?
A typical slice of my bread is about 34 cals i think and I don't want to go above 250 for breakfast.
thanks
A puree of various dark green veggies (parsley, cilantro, lettuce, and any other dark green leafy veggie) is very tasty and extremely low in calories. Peanut butter is another option or bananas. A third option we have here in Israel is a date spread. It's quite healthy and high in fiber, though it's also high in sugars/carbs.
Other recipes I know of are eggplant spread (babaganush), moch liver pate, egg white omelete.
A thin spread of peanut butter is great protien and the healthy fat.
Scrambled eggs good protien.
reduced fat cream cheese comes in a lot of different flavors (as does fat free, which I prefer the taste of, but many people say it doesn't taste like cream cheese!), reduced sugar jam, almond or cashew butter..hmmmm.....
or you could make a breakfast sandwich: 2 slices of your bread (about 70 calories), 1 laughing cow light spreadable cheese (35 calories), 2 cooked egg whites (about 40 calories) and 1 gardenburger meatless breakfast sausage (about 50 calories) = 195 calories, leaves room for some fruit!
I love to have thinly sliced tomatoes on my toast. When I'm out of tomatoes I sometimes use cucumber instead, that's good too but tomatoes taste better.
There's tons of things you top a piece of toast with! I usually have one slice of toast with a thin spread of peanut butter and strawberry jam right on top of the peanut butter. OR avacado and tomatos with freshly ground pepper on top...or even guacomole. Hummus is good too. I always have one of the above and 2 egg white omelette
Pesto is really delicious with bread. It's a little high cal because of the olive oil, but it's still really healthy with all that basil and garlic.
You could try fat free cheese slices (I buy the ones from Borden's - they come in sharp cheddar, American, or swiss, have 30 calories, 4g protein, and 30% your DRV of calcium!) with microwaved tomatoes and a dash of garlic salt.
Or, if you want something different and a bit 'desserty,' spread a thin layer of vanilla yogurt on a half-way toasted slice of bread and sprinkle either cinnamon or unsweetened cocoa powder. The outcome is a cinnamon/chocolatey kind of glaze!
A thin scraping of Marmite or Vegemite (even ontop of a thin scraping of butter).
Sugar free Jams, Jellies and preserves are great. They're all around 10 calories for a tablespoon and come in a lot of different flavors.
cottage cheese, pam+cinnamon for cinnamon toast, hummus, fruit slices, ff processed cheese (kraft makes one 30 cals), tuna/turkey slices
I know you said you don't like to go above 250 for breakfast, but for about 300 calories try - 2 Kashi GoLEAN Blueberry waffles (better than low calorie bread) spread with 1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese and topped with 3 ounces of fresh blueberries. Good protein and fiber and it's delicious! It's super filling too!
Honey, All natural and absolutely delicious on toast 1 Tbsp = about 60 calories. Or some flax oil and cinnamon, flax oil is amazing for you and the cinnamon makes it taste great, almond butter is good too, yummy and VERY healthy. 1 Tbsp = about 80 calories...hmmmm what else Hummus is one of my favourites too 1 Tbsp = anywhere from 30-60 calories.
Yup, hope this helps
Laughing cow swiss cheese wedge for 35 calories 2g of fat. There is a lot in one wedge and it tastes like cream cheese!
I like beans on toast. I make my own, but canned refried beans are ok. Also vegemite with a bit of almond butter or peanut butter.
Hummus - comes in many flavors - can find in fridge section of health food store
Just a few ideas:
Make bruschetta - top toast with diced tomatoes, capers, garlic, onions and a drizzle of olive oil, or some other favorite bruschetta recipe
A shmear of sesame butter (which has twice the fiber as regular peanut butter) with a tiny smudge of low-sugar jam and a sprinkling of All-Bran with Extra Fiber or some other favorite cereal for texture
Black bean-corn salsa - mix equal parts black beans, corn and diced tomatoes and add diced jalapenos and cilantro to taste. Pile it on - it's loaded with fiber, texture and flavor.
Hummus with sliced tomatoes and a bit of avocado
Of course, there's a million of 'em, but those are my favs.
how bout just slicing some strawberries on top. mmm
you could put some light laughing cow cheese with jam. i like to put spray butter, splenda and cinnamon. be inventive. just try different things until you find what you like.
I'm with nycgirl... I love a little bit of marmite/vegemite on toast. Also, don't know if anyone suggested a bit of fresh avocado spread over toast with some tomatoes or fat free feta cheese. For weekend breakfasts, I love a single slice of whole wheat toast with marmite or avocado with a poached egg on top with hot sauce, that and a piece of fruit makes a fantastic breakfast.
No one mentioned strained yogurt - it's really great, and you can flavor it with whatever you like. The Fage Greek strained yogurt is available in 0% and 2% fat, and it's yummy. Or you can take any brand of plain yogurt and strain it yourself - if you don't have a yogurt strainer, use a fine mesh permanent-type coffee filter, or cover any fine strainer with cheesecloth and pile the yogurt in. Set the filter over a bowl to catch the whey that drips out and leave it until the yogurt is the thickness you need for spreading (overnight at least). You can add herbs for a savory topping or try sugar-free maple syrup and some cinnamon for something sweet. I just like it plain!
