Tofu Shirataki Noodles - Experiences?
Hi! Just recently purchased the Hungry Girl book and she always raves about those Tofu Shirataki Noodles. I've tried out a couple of the other recipes and they've been great, but I love noodles, so I really wanted to try this one (HG Fettucini Alfredo). I went to Publix after work and was looking at the Tofurky dogs and noticed that they actually had the Tofu Shirataki Noodles (couldn't find them before). Got so excited, that I actually bought two packages - one to eat for lunch today and another to save for later. Got home, followed the directions, sat down and put them in my mouth - disgusting!! I had to actually spit them out because I was so disgusted. I love noodles, but I couldn't get past that texture/consistency of these things. Uggh. I'm so disapointed now because I totally wasted money on the ingredients for the recipe and the other pack of noodles that I'll never eat. Anyone else ever tried these, and did you like them? Maybe I'm just wierd, lol.
I'm sorry, but I absolutely LOVE tofu shirataki noodles. When I first tried them, I boiled it with a vegetable bullion cube. And the taste was amazing. Maybe it's just my taste buds :P Because not alot of people like it either.
Hey, you can send me the other package :D
Like them, just be sure to rinse them well. I use them in anything I use regular pasta for.
I think they're gross. :)
I'm not sure about the Shiataki, since I've never tried them (they freak me out a little), but I really like the pasta from Fiber Gourmet
If you're not used to eating a lot of fiber, please be careful and don't eat too much of it, and make sure to drink lots of water as well. All of the fiber in them will fill you up a lot, but they're just 130 calories a serving, and it's really close to regular pasta.

I'm so with you! Even thinking about them right now makes my stomach turn, lol! Don't they have a really weird consistency that just freaks you out? They smelled pretty funky when they came out of the package too.
Charles_angel~ Thanks, I'll keep the Fiber Gourmet in mind. I actually ended up just boiling some regular wheat pasta spirals (Hodgson Mills) and topping with some low cal marinara sauce. Pretty good.
My experience with these things has been decent....although I kind of just had to let go of the "this will be exactly like my regular pasta" idea. I boil them for a few minutes and make sure to smother them with some healthy sauce --- they are really filling and though definitely not the same texture as regular pasta, can still be a decent substitute. Boiling them for a bit helps get rid of that weird odor. Add a little parmesan cheese too, that never hurt anyone. :o)
I second the weird smell and texture comments. I was so excited to try them and I made the hungry girl recipe for sesame noodles. I actually threw it away after eating a few bites which is very unlike me. I then tried the fiber gourmet - and it is exactly like regular pasta. I personally would rather eat the 130 calorie serving of fiber gourmet than try and choke down the tofu noodles for 20 calories. Let us know what you think. A lot of people seem to like them.
I think I'm going to throw the other package of the tofu noodles away and get the Fiber Gourmet ones instead. :) Thanks everyone!
don't worry, i almost threw up after i put the first bite in my mouth, so you are NOT alone. haha.
LOL I like what Fiber Gourmet says about Tofu Shirataki on their website:
We didn't include shirataki noodles in the chart since they're not even in the same product category. While everything else in the chart is a form dry pasta, shirataki noodles seem to be a form of water. Seriously. With only 3.5 grams of actual food in a 113-gram serving, shirataki noodles are 97% water.
This makes comparisons to dry pasta impossible on many levels: the texture is totally different, the nutritional values are all skewed, and water just doesn't fill you up the same way actual food does.
The Cold Sesame Noodle recipe is AMAZING.
So is the fettuccine girlfredo recipe.
I don't know if I'd like them with a tomato sauce...?
are you trying to eat them plain?? You have to rinse them VERY well before cooking...they tell you this on the bag and they are serious. Use a strainer and let the water run over them, mixing around with your fingers for a good minute or two. Me, I do that and then boil them and then rinse them again. The second thing is what are you putting on them? You can't just have a very light butter and pepper thing like regular pasta because you need to add some taste... mix in red sauce and I think they are delicious.
I FINALLY found these things in the store, picked up the package and was immediatly grossed out just by what they look like in the bag. Those of you who like them, I'm actually jealous, I wish I could even give them a fair shot but I just can't
I really don't get it...what brand are you all buying? The one I got just looked like regular linguini except in a bag filled with water. O.o
I think shirataki/tofu shirataki noodles are pretty good. But I think a lot of people are just unfamiliar with the texture of it, since when most people think pasta, they don't think it's something that chewy?? I guess. But even though some brands add tofu to make it more firm to the palate, it may still be so foreign to a person that it freaks them out.
When I first had konyakku (what it's made out of), it freaked me out because of the gelatenous texture, but it really isn't so bad.
I think shirataki is pretty good though... and so awesome when it's so low in calories and with the tofu mixture, adds some fiber to it, too.
I've been dying to try these things for the past couple of years, but no where close to me sells them. Poo. :(
You can order them on Amazon, silentdeadlyrose.
i'm not found of them at all. They not only smell of rotten fish, but they also have a really rubbery consistency that in no way replicates that of noodles. Even weirder to have it with pasta sauce. :-/
i like the tofu noodles and the fiber gourmet. I wish I could find the fiber gourmet somewhere closer to me. Only one store carries them locally here and I live in Houston you would think another store would carry them. I surely dont need 10 bags. Has anyone tried the mac and cheese?
I don't think they are gross. Rinse them very well and don't just eat them plain. When you order they generally come with a few recipes. I use them with spaghetti sauce, tuna casserole, noodles and veggies. Chicken soup. They are different but saving that many calories is huge for me. I really like them with spaghetti sauce. Mac and cheese too. Not for everyone I guess.
