Does TOFU really taste good?

Quote  |  Reply

I am thinking about trying tofu but I need some delicious ways to use it. I hear it really has no taste but that it absorbs the other flavors in the dish, So I guess I am more concerned about the 'mouth feel' or texture which is just as important.

Also, what type should I buy?

Thanks!

I eat tofu all the time, and I like it.

silken tofu has a smooth texture, you can blend it into anything.

reg tofu has a firmer texture,  you can freeze thaw it and squeeze the water out, that gives it more of a "meaty" texture.

marinating the tofu in whatever flavor the dish i going to have, veg broth, soy sauce,bar-b-que sauce and then bake it,(kids like that one)  herbs and spices of your taste.  I like soy sauce and browning it in olive oil, with vegetables.

lots and lots of recipes.  google it.  allrecipes.com has some good recipes, (I must be their biggest fan)

Tofu not having much flavor naturally is it's best quality! You can do so much with it! Stir fry, make sloppy joe's with it, use it instead of eggs for an egg salad type subsitute, use it to replace cheese in stuffed pasta dishes, so much! Just get creative!

Thank you, pteresa19 and kortlynmoore,

I'm going to get some silken tofu today. I came across this recipe on this site. Hope it will be good.

"Traditionally, bisques are thick soups made from shellfish and other seafood. Originally, however, the name was given to any thick, creamy soup, regardless of the ingredients. This recipe is rich-bodied, creamy, and completely vegetarian. Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

2 medium onions, peeled and coarsely chopped 6 cups (about 3 pounds) zucchini, sliced 1 cup carrot, thinly sliced 4 teaspoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 5 cups water 4 tablespoons vegetable broth, Vogue Vegy Base 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 16 ounces tofu, preferably silken tofu

Directions

In a large soup pot, sauté the onions, carrot, and zucchini in the oil, together with the salt, for about 5 minutes over medium heat. Add the water (and wine, if you are using it), soup base, pepper, and tofu, and cook for another 5 minutes. Blend the ingredients until smooth, return to the heat, and cook for a few more minutes.

Yum! I want to try that recipe too! :D

My personal fav thing to do with tofu is get the extra firm kind, squeeze all the water out of it by pressing it between several layers of paper towels, then cubing it and marinating it in soy sauce, chili flakes, garlic, ginger and green onion pieces for an hour or so, then stir frying it with fresh veggies! best of all, the veggies don't ever get soggy because I don't have to time the tofu being 'done'

Thanks! I am going to start a tofu recipe file.

My favorite thing to do with tofu is chopping up some cubed firm tofu and mixing with bulgur wheat, roasted red pepper hummus, green peas, and whatever oter veggies I happen to have on hand. I usually either drizzle it with olive oil and have the tofu raw in warmer weather, or I bake the tofu in the oven with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  I also really like it cooked up in with ratatouille. Thats basically sauteed onions, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms with diced tomatoes and some seasonings (marjoram, thyme, parsely, and I think basil)

It's also really good in a wrap with some avocado, crushed almonds, tomato, and sprouts or spinach for lunch.

i loveee tofu. my favorite way to use it is in stir fries, with a spicy peanut sauce. just search tofu stir fry recipes, and you'll definitely love it. or in noodle dishes like pad thai or pad seeiw.

i've also used silken soft tofu as a pudding base, blended it up with coco powder a banana and some agave necter for a healthier type of pudding.

Can also blend silken tofu with melted chocolate chips and a little agave nectar and pour that into a premade pie shell. Yum!  After that just chill it in the fridge =)

i love TOFU!!!! Laughing

WOW !! I am a tofu junkie NOW !! ALL these ideas sound like good stuff for the tummy. Never thought of a hi protein chocolate pie !!
