Has anyone here ever had Tofutti cheese? The local health food store has started carriying it, but normally vegan cheese is nasty, so I'd like to know weather this stuff tastes good before I spend 4$ on a small pack of cheese lol

the "american" is darn near indistiguishable from the "real" thing (as real as american cheese gets). the cheddar is good *in* stuff like burritos, but no good on its own. the mozzarella tastes like butt.
Personally, I like the Veganrella cheese. It doesn't taste much
like cheese, but it's worth a try if you come across it. :)

Tofutti is the only kind of Vegan cheese I like. I actually love the mozarella in grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. Sooo good...
Thanks for the replies and Tmaccari I'm very allergic to Veganrella so I can't eat it.
April, honestly anything i've ever tried by them I love!! I'd say go for it.
As far as american faux cheese slices i enjoy the toffutti onES.
But as far as really good vegan mozzarella cheese i would say go with Follow your heart (they are the people that make Veganaise) Their cheese is wonderful and tastes great regular or melted (yes it actually melts!) They also have several other types like nacho, cheddar, and monterey jack. All which melt nicely! It comes in a block so you can slice or shred. It's really a nice replacement (and helps me with my pizza cravings) If you cant find it anywhere near you, i'd look into special ordering it online.

xpreciousroyx I've had that cheese before and loved it!! but it went bad in like 2 weeks in a sealed container in the fridge, and I can only buy it from wholefoods, which is 3 hours away, I'll probably order some more online. I just wanted to see what you all said about tofutti cheese
yea tofutti is good.... pretty close to the real thing if you ask me but doesn't melt as well. although i have had pretty good grilled cheese w/ tomato with those.
sucks that your cheese went bad. make sure you check the dates, mine have lasted for about a month.

Oh, I'm sorry, I feel like a jerk. I'm sure you listed your allergies before.
You're not a jerk Tmaccari, even my brother forgets I can't eat gluten/wheat half the time *mutters* "and you'd think he would remember after 5 and a half years...."
follow your heart is so delicous! i'm not too crazy about tofutti "cheese" cheese, but their cream cheeses and sour cream are to die for. follow your heart is worth it, even if it does go bad quickly. just have two recepies planned and eat it within a few days.
tofutti brand non-dairy crepes are SO good
i mean, it doesnt taste like cheese, but it tastes like a crepe with something unidentifiable and yummy
highly recommended, and only 110 calories (or 90 i forget)

I haven't found a vegan cheese I like except "follow your heart". I just think the others are waaay too plastic-y.
Maybe I'm just too used to the good kind of cheese (Im from Vermont, land of cheese...) not that fake kind that normally comes wrapped in individual slices -gross!
But FYH is still wicked expensive for me, so I rarely buy it. (Go college student..)

Tofutti non-dairy slices make grilled cheese just like the real thing.
Not very low-fat option, so try it in anything you would grill or
something that gets the cheese melty. They are 1/2 types types of vegan
cheese I will eat, the other being the Vegan Gourmet Cheese Alternative
and sometimes Veganrella, I guess. All of them are mostly only
good if you use them in something they will melt in. I can eat
them not melted, but you just have to convince yourself not to compare
it to "real" cheese and enjoy it on its own merit.

heyheyhey, I adore the crepes as well! They are amazing, and I actually think they strongly taste like either cream or ricotta cheese. It has the same "tang" and texture when it is not over warmed at least :-)
everyone else, i had no idea Tofutti made anything other than "cream cheese"... I hope to find it in a store near me. Unfortionaly I have a hard time locating any places in my area, and it is kinda pricy.

Where are u from Mere? Welcome to CC! Are you vegan?
The tofutti cream cheese ROCKS! So good. The regular cheese is okay, but you know how it is - nothing ever tastes the same.
Sarah_Sue, I am from Chesapeake,VA. No, I am not Vegan... I haven't eaten beef or pork since 2003, and I drink almost only soy milk, and am starting to enjoy soy icecreams though. I don't eat anything with fur, lol... I wish I could cut out fish and chicken, but they are my favorites! (I am about to go buy some Bocca "Chicken" patties though. I have tried them and they're pretty awesome!)
Yeah there are a lot of good fake chicken pattys out there. I don't know if you use tvp or not. It is textured vegetable protein. Here's an easy way to make your own fake chicken patties. I call them "Chrik'n patties"
Soak 1 C TVP or TSP in 1C vegetable broth or fake chicken broth for 10 minutes.
Add 1C Bisquick and mix together
Form into thin patties and coat with crushed cornflakes
Fry in oil turning frequently until nice and brown and crispy. Add salt/pepper or whatever seasoning you like.
These are really easy to make and I am going to try baking them on a cookie sheet instead of frying to save on calories. I am pretty sure it would work.

Yummy that actually sounds really good! I'll have to try it!
