Working muscles causes them to hold onto water

Right now your BMI (Body Mass Index) is barely in the "normal" range at about 20.4 (20 to 24 is "healthy"). If you lose the 5 lbs you are hoping you'll be classified as underweight with a BMI of 19.5. You are already at a healthy weight.

Don't stress about losing 5 lbs, if anything you could stand to put a little on in the form of muscles. Muscles are what gives you the tone you want anyway. Walking is not going to help you tone. Unless you are overweight (which you obviously aren't) you can't both lose weight and gain tone. Keep with your previous workout and you will probably see results in the form of toning your muscles. Good luck!

1. 18.5 - 24.9 is normal

2. I have checked my BMI many times and 110 lbs is within the normal range for my height. 18.5 is underweight and at 110 my BMI would be at 19.5 which is in the healthy range...

3. I am only stressing it because I tend to gain weight over the school year and I don't want to end up at the end of the school year gaining 15 lbs.

4. Walking is still a good exercize though even if it dosen't help me tone

Do pilates!!  It really works!  My stomach was way flatter after only a couple of weeks.  You can buy a DVD and they're not too expensive.  I have a Winsor pilates DVD and I find her kind of annoying but if you turn the volume down it's great.  Eventually I memorized it anyway so I just do it on my own.

I was using the BMI tool on this site which says 20-24 is normal and under 20 is underweight. I checked wikipedia and you are right, 18.5 to 25 is normal, but under 18.5 is considered underweight. I didn't mean to offend you.

Walking is indeed good exercise, but your original post was concerning getting toned for summer. I agree with bre above that pilates is good for toning. Also yoga or moderate weight lifting (sometimes I use my book bag) will also work. My point still stands that it will be very hard to tone AND lose weight. Concentrate on how your clotes fit rather than the number on the scale.

Yeah that is another reason I want to lose these 5lbs because my pants are getting a little tigh... Also this is the site I use http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
