Toning arms

Quote  |  Reply

I'm having a difficult time getting my arms to quit being flabby. The majority of exercise I do is walking (I can't run because of a knee problem) and I have a set of 2 kg weights but they seem to be doing nothing! Any advice?

a great goal would be to tone up those arms-

1. lose overall body fat by getting that heart rate up for 30-50 min every other day with more intense cardio. if running is out of the question, try elliptical or swimming for resistance and some good fat burning. walking is great but not heart-pumping enough!

2. define arms...2 kgs is about 4.5 pounds - i would say that's a bit light for weight lifting (don't worry you won't bulk up if you up to 7/8 pound dumbells!!) focus on back to back bicep/tricep exercises (e.g. curls at 8 to 12 reps followed by tricep extensions at 8 to 12 reps, repeat twice/three times)...try a variety of exercises to work the back and chest too, as those muscles are interconnected.

don't worry, women really don't bulk up easily and i know that's a fear. toning is not necessarily synonymous withactive muscle-building...i like the 'bikini-body challenge' found on http://www.shape.com/workouts/bikini_body/&nb sp; good luck!

I also have a bad knee, try using an elliptical machine. I think it is better cardio then walking on a tredmill.

You gotta drop body fat.

My arms were super flabby, but they're now starting to  tone up. It's a huge problem area for me too, and it's taken a looooong time to lose most of the flabbiness.  There's still some flabiness, but most of it has steadily gone away.

That's just the way it goes though. Lose fat and your flabby arms will slowly tighten  back up.

Yeah, I also have a layer of fat padding over my arm.  I have been doing weight lifting for a few months now and my arms are definitely bigger and stronger, they just don't look any more defined.  But once I lose the fat, I'm sure these new muscles of mine should be easy to see.  To the OP, just lose overall body fat and your muscles will become much more visible.  And by the way, 4.5 lb weights won't do anything for your arm.  Might as well lift pencils with regard to getting any muscle tone.  Definitely try out some weights in the 8-10 lb range.  The harder to push your muscles, the more growth you will see (but don't overdo it)

Yup, definition is a matter of low body fat - but that workout from Shape? The cardio portion was okay, but as per usual, the strength portion was a thinly veiled insult to the capability of women everywhere.

You' do vastly better following something from Krista's kompleat kompendium of workout routines from Stumptuous.com or  The New Rules of Lifting for Women - or anything from the list of training programs from the FAQ.

swimming and climbing have both really firmed up my arms. I strongly recommend both, if you have the facilities.
