mumblingfool,
I dont think their is any one exercise that will make you lose your fat on the stomach.
My personal trainer told me that usually the tummy area fat is the last place that a person looses fat on.
You can weight lift and try to tone the tummy muscles all you want but cardio and toning are going to work together to make you lose that fat.
Also, i think you shuld not focus on one area, the tummy fat is going to go slowly.

What I've learned:
To lose fat: cardio, cardio, cardio. To gain muscle: lift weights. If you gain muscle in you abs you won't see it through the fat, so cardio, cardio, cardio.

I have been on exercise and diet for a couple of months and lost 8 pounds. I actually lost most of my inches in the middle section and went down 2 sizes. I have been doing 2*60 mins pilates and cardios (including 2*45 mins treadmill jogging, 2*20 mins rope jumping, and 2.5-4 hrs cross country hiking) each week.
Pilates focus on streghthening your trunk muscles. I think it has helped me to reduce waist size.

Cardio plus clean eating - that means more fat burning cardio or aerobic session, eat lean meat, only good fat, enough protein and fiber. Oh and drink water.
IMHO in the mean time you don't go crazy on your abs exercise until you start shedding more fat on your tummy. Firm abs muscle + fat layer = girth. We don't want that :)
Good luck!
