Just took a Blood Sugar test at work...
The nurse said it was 143 mg and that it should be under 100. I had not eaten anything right before. (had eggs this AM then took the test 4.5 hours later) What does this mean? Should I go get tested for Diabetes?
I would talk to your doctor about it. They might suggest a diabetes test.
It does seem very high if the only thing you had eaten in the day was protein.
I have been a diabetic my whole life (was diagnosed at 4). a "normal" fasting blood sugar should be between 70 - 120. At 120 they say you are "borderline" diabetic. I agree with Karozel, talk to your doctor. Even if they say you are "borderline" or even diabetic, don't panic. Most type II diabetics where you are are controlled by diet and exercise.. and I'm sure the doc would wish to redo the test just to be certain it was correct.
Yes. You should follow-up with your doctor to be properly screened for diabetes, which may include a fasting blood sugar level (no food/drink for 8 hrs), and/or an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT) (drink 75gms glucose and test blood sugar during a 2hr period). A true "fasting blood sugar" of 126 or greater is a diagnostic criteria for diabetes. 100-125 fasting is pre-diabetes. A blood sugar 200 or greater during a 2-hr GTT is also a dignostic criteria for diabetes.
Having a "random" blood sugar reading of 143 is indicative of some level of glucose intolerance, but is not a diagnostic criteria for diabetes or pre-diabetes in and of itself. So, you should not panic by any means, but you should also not ignore this.
