I took the diet pill SEA-THIN and GAINED 10 lbs

Quote  |  Reply

I had started getting serious March 3 of this year in eating healthy and going running and hitting the gym.  I wanted to boost my weight loss a little so that I could achieve my goal by the time my BF came home in June (just so you know I'm 20yrs old, I started out at 173 and I'm 5''8'') and I'm trying to get down to 158 by june.

So I searched around for a weight managment supplement that wouldn't contain TOO many weird ingredients and caffeine to keep my sleep schedule from being normal so I decided to start trying this new pill called Sea-Thin (combo of ocean plant like thermogen and pommagranite ingredients I think) about a week and a half after I started here at CC Plus. So with my newly formed diet and exersise plan, I took Sea-Thin exactly how it was directed.  It says that in about a month of taking it, it will start to take significant effect (you got THAT right)

My first 4 weeks of excersising 6 days a week for 40 minutes with a combo of mostly running and moderate strength training, I lost 8 lbs! So I was pretty darn excited.  I kept up the routine for a couple more weeks and I remained the same weight of 165 and I noticed I looked a little better and felt a lot better too.  But just 2 weeks ago, I suddenly had gotten on the scale one wednesday and I had practicaly jumped from 165 to 175 over the course of two days!!!!  I was no where near my period, I hadn't eaten any abnormal foods than usual and I've been drinking a decent amount of water (4 24oz bottles a day) My calorie intake is 1, 500-600 and I burn on average maybe 400 cals depending on the day

I kept constant watch over the next week to see if anything had changed and nothing!  I am STILL 175 right now and I've even upped my running to over an hour, 6 days a week!  I started singling out the possiblities of what could have caused this drastice weight gain.  Either A) I've suddenly gained 10 lbs of muscle while sleeping?? or B) its definitly something to do with SEA-THIN.

I haven't taken it in a week now, and I've lost one pound.  So what do you all think?  Is my body just crazy?  Or is Sea-Thin definitly NOT the right weight loss supplement to be taking right now?

well my opinion is that all diet pills are bad news but I've never really tried them or researched them, it's just hearing a lot of bad things about them that give me that impression. Maybe you could do a google search on Sea thin and see if there's any reviews from people who have tried it.

I agree that pretty much all diet pills are really bad news. If I were ever looking into something like that, I would look at taking something at was all natural. But I would depend more on diet and exercise, instead of pills. But what about Hoodia? That's natural... I think it is at least. Not sure really, just know that's what I've heard somewhere :]

You mention speeding up your weight loss.. It's only safe to assume you can lose 1.5-2 lbs a week.. and the more you mess with pills that don't work, instead of the right way to lose weight,  the longer you will draw out the process of shedding the pounds.

Good Luck though! :]

Well, I've played with diet pills before in the past... A few years ago I had a bad reaction.. One bad enough to say the hell with this, and if I can't lose it on my own, then so be it..... I got sick of looking at the fat me in the mirror in the dressing rooms, and the bathroom.. I hated mirrors due to my weight gain... You went from good to bad because of a quick fix.. Not saying that's what you was looking for.. But you can never boost your body into doing something faster.. I should know.. I had to get on to my own mother who drinks those boost shots.. I told her, do you even know what that crap is doing to your body.. Get you some B-12 and some Chromium Picolinate... The best thing I've ever used in weight lost is Women's One A Day.... I really love it.. Never gave me any bad reaction..

Sea Thin- I can't give you an comment on that crap, because I've never taken them before..  Stop taking that crap, and get back to you doing it without the pills, and eating the right amount of good foods you need... Getting in that much needed workout in ever so many days... You started off so good.. 10 pounds is a big jump. I'm not going to go into it could be water weight gain, bloat or nothing like that. I just think your body had an reaction.. When your body has a reaction to something.. That means.... Your body has to do something to handle it.. You already changed your hormones by changing your diet.. Then you changed them again to make things go a lot quicker... But the deal of it was.... They started to quickly grab and lock on to what ever it was in your body... We may never know what these diet pills may do to you.. Lot of these things are not FDA Approved. That is the main KEY! Not FDA Approved.

I really think you did the right thing.. Going back to doing what you was doing before the (Sea-Thin)... This these pills say lose up to 20 pounds or your money back.. No they never say that... Just toss those things in the trash, and get back on board with things... If I can hit a all time plateau of 180lbs. for 4 months, and come out of it with an extra weight loss of 12 pounds since coming to CC. I know we all will support you in getting you back on track..I've been at this weight loss things for years, and I would always give up and give in. There is no quick way down.. It's always a quick way up.. If I can pull this weight loss off with my own steam, then I know you can do it too.. You was doing it... I'm sorry that these pills messed you up...

I wish you all the luck...

"All Natural" does not make something healthy or safe.  There are plenty of "all natural" substances that can do serious damage and/or kill you.

Don't waste your money on diet pills.  Losing weight takes time and effort....period.   You are better off staying on track with regular exercise and cutting back calories.  If diet pills actually worked as well as they claim then we would not have an obesity epidemic because everyone could simply pop a pill.  Many of them are not regulated and who knows what ingredients they contain.   You said you wanted a pill that didn't contain "too many weird ingredients".  Why would you be willing to ingest ANY weird ingredients?  Diet pills are a multi billion dollar industry because people are lured in by the promise of a quick fix or an extra edge.  It is a for-profit enterprise and these companies are not interested in helping you to lose weight....they are interested in making money.  Losing weight is free.  It does not cost money to go for a walk or to put less food in your mouth.  You are doing a great job already!!  Keep it up and throw the pills in the trash!

Starbux,

You implied that "all natural" was better for you.  This is a flawed way of thinking and I pointed it out.  I don't think there is anything I can say to answer the OP's question that hasn't already been said in the other answers, but I can contribute to this thread by pointing out mis-information being given.

Do you feel different or does your clothes fit better? you probably are gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat but takes less space than fat, so you might be dropping sizes and not weight

Yes, I did imply that if I were to ever take a diet pill I would personally feel safer with something more natural like hoodia. Not any all natural substance, just that one. If I were to ever take it at all.

No misinformation in that. Just my personal opinion. :]

SeaThin is nothing more than fucoxanthin and CLA.  It is not a weight loss pill - it is a dietary supplement.  It has been shown to have a thermagenic effect on white adipose tissue through the up regulation of UCP1.  It could neither cause weight gain nor weight loss.  It can aid in fat metabolism and increase the loss of fat during a calorie deficit period.  Unless it has some magical manifestation properties:  It definitely cannot be the extra ten pounds you gained, unless you took a couple hundred of them a day.

Are you really saying you eat only 500 - 600 calories a day, and burn 400?  If so, your body is trying to stay alive on only 100 -  200 net calories.  This may explain the fluid retention, because under eating and malnutrition cause swelling, especially distended abdomen.  It may or may not be the diet pills, which aren't a good idea anyway.  But perhaps you typed the numbers wrong.

Under nourishment is very damaging to the body over time.  Please consider consulting a nutritionist, or at least do some reading about proper nutrition.  We have a wonderful feature under the Advice tab.  Click on Advice and look for Ask Mary.

Thank you for all your encouragement on this but remember, I'm not 100% sure if it was the Sea-Thin that made my weight jump so rapidly.  I wanted to post this topic because I HAD tried to look on the internet to see if anyone else had tried it even though it is still really new on the market.  I found nothing, and I am basing this strickly on my experiences while ON this supplement and I hope to caution others when they browse the weight loss section....

I'm definitly not taking it or anything else right now and still eating right and excersising.  I am definitly new to the whole weight loss thing since all the other times I've lost weight, it's usually from grueling physical training with my job and I really didn't NEED to watch what I ate or a pill.  So I definitly learned my lesson on deit supplements-either weight loss ones, or the ones that claim to speed up metabolism-I'm not touching any of it!!!Foot in mouth

That's very important to remember. My first cousin was drinking one of those diet teas touted to be all natural, about 10 years ago. She had a stroke at age 41. They've taken that particular tea off the market but you really do need to be careful.

I doubt the pills had any negative effect -- you sound like you're pounding it out at the gym, eating well, and that's great.  my suggestion is to log your weight everyday.  (lots of people are going to disagree with me, now!)  the weight you log is not terribly accurate, but by logging everyday, you will have a trend line that more closely characterizes your real weight.  all my goals are trend line based -- otherwise, you're needlessly tormenting yourself with ever fluctuating water weight.

Sounds like a good time to stop taking the pills and see how your weight loss goes.  Congrats on all the running!!!  6 days a week for over an hour - that is awesome.  Are you going to train for any races?

I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be 1500-1600
