Took a long break...now training to run a half
Does anyone have similar training goals? so we can share advice and what's going on...
I'm training for my first half too on Oct 12th! I ran a 15K on July 1st - but it was a struggle. I haven't done much the last week (vacation) and I've also got a breast cancer 60k fundraiser walk in a week and a half so I can't intensenly train again until mid August, which worries me a bit. I came home from vacation with a cold and was supposed to do a lot of running this week but haven't been able to get out. I'm trying to find the motivation to get outside today!
I ran my first half marathon a couple years ago and used this program. I was able to complete the race no problem and managed to stay injury free, which can be an issue if you're not used to running longer distances.
sybil: It worries me a bit too, that you're waiting until mid August, can't you try and incorporate your training for the fundraiser walk into your marathon training? Use walking as your crosstraining maybe?
I'm training to run a half marathon on oct 12 as well!
I am running a 5K this saturday and a 10K Sept 9th.
I have never been a runner before so this isn't exactly starting over from a break, more like starting fresh. The most I've ever run in the past is 3 miles and I get on and off running spurts. We have a program at the gym where I work that laid out a 3 1/2 month running plan so hopefully I can stick to it.
sybil: Not sure how big of a runner you are but I def couldnt start mid august!
Also, for my 5k this weekend, do you guys usually eat anythign before a shorter run like that-if so what do you eat?
Good luck! Your first race is so fun but overcome nerves...
i am goign to try and run one oct 4th!! im going to add u as a friend.
try runnersworld.com for a training plan... also you might use flotrackr.com to track your runs.....
i currently run 3x a week.this wk its 2 miles, 5 mile interval running and 6 miles.... next wk its 2.5.7.
*waves*
Me! :) I'm running a half on 9/14. I don't know how fast I'll be, but then I'm never really fast. I took a bit of time off this summer to shake the feeling that running had become a chore, and because post-marathon I didn't have any good goals and I seem to need a goal. But I'm really excited now about running again and about training.
Good luck to all of you!
Hello My name is alba and Im doing a Triathlon on september 21, 2008.
Im doing training with team and training (teamintraining.org) and they are fantastic. I raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while Im doing it and its so rewarding.
Check out my blog:
I must admit I have no stopped eating regular foods that are bad but with all the training that they are giving us 3 days a week Ive lost about 10-15lbs over the summer.
I look foward to continue a healthier approach with eating better but I need a little help Im hoping that we can share advice on this because I need all the help I can get.
So I ran my 5K this weekend. A little dissapointed in myself. I had to stop and walk a little bit in the last mile. I have been running early mornings- around 530 when its nice and cool out. By 830 Saturday it was already hot and humid and the sun was beating down on me. I probably could have pushed myself to finish but oh well next time I suppose.
Did my first 1/2 mary on Jan 13th this year - finished in just a little over 2:07....hoping to at least run the same pace this time around.
Had to take a little time off due to some health issues in March, but am pretty much back on track. I followed Hal Higdon's training schedule to prepare for the half back in the New Year. Since then, I've just pretty much been coasting along, doing mostly medium distance runs for my workouts (5 - 8 miles per run). I'm scheduled to run a 12 miler this weekend....and I'll probably do a couple of 15 milers (I like to overshoot my goal...psychologically, it helps me because I know I can do the 13.1 mile distance).
Originally, I was hoping to do a sub 2 hour half marathon, but given that I'm still recovering from the surgery (no lasting side effects, thankfully, but I can feel it in my energy levels and endurance).....I think I'll just hope to finish at a 10 min/mile pace. It's still my goal to finish a 1/2 marathon in under 2 hours - but I think I'll save that for another race. This upcoming one is just about proving to myself that I'm back on track.
Hey, welcome back! I remember you from before I took my hiatus/injury. Have you been posting your miles on the Run Around The World post? (I can't remember seeing you lately)
I'm strongly considering a half marathon Sept 21 (yes, SOON!). I just decided yesterday! I will probably do a 20K on Sept 1 to prep. I worked out a rough draft of my training schedule this morning. My long runs for the next 7 weeks are 8, 10, 11, 12.4, 9, 8, and then the race. I wish I had more time to squeeze in a longer one before the race, but oh well. If I can do the 20K, I can definitely do a half marathon. What do your training plans look like?
