Do you ever think your eating to much wheat?

I often find it really hard to find substitutes for it even though I know its important to have a balenced diet.

I'll have things like:

Toast or bran flakes for breakfast.

Bread and soup for lunch.

Pasta like spagetti or macaroni for dinner.

I before I know it I have literally eaten mostly wheat all day, it seems to be in most things.

Bread,

pasta - spagetti, macaroni, noodles, tagliatelle, fusilli

bran flakes, other cerials

cous cous

semolina

Other things like crumpets, biscuits, cake

 

When you think of other grains there doesn't seem to be nearly so many products made out of them

oats - porridge, oat milk, muslie

corn - cornflakes, totillas, polenta

lentils? - guess you could make lentil burgers

rice - some noodles, rice milk

quinoa - just the raw stuff i think

potatos - crisps, potato cakes

 

Even soya, theres not much alternative to soya products.

I know you can get more types of milk now, like rice milk, almond and oat.

but when it comes to things like yogurts, cream, fake meats, tofu, cheeses

theres no alternative to these dairy things other than soya ones, from what i know.

I knew I was, and then I found out I have Celiac Disease, which means I cannot consume any wheat, bran, rye, and gluten containing products, my body cannot digest it and it makes me feel really cruddy, to put it lightly.

It has been hard to re-learn how to make and cook everything, but in the end cutting out all wheat products not only made me feel better, but reach out for a more variety of food.

At Wal-Mart you can buy Deboles rice (wheat and gluten free) pastas. At Sun Harvest (or your local health food store) you can buy Food For Life Millet bread, which is made of brown rice and has a sweet, yeasty taste, although may be a little more dense than the bread you're used to. I have to avoid oats myself, because they also trigger reactions in people with CD.

But I guess in the end, you will end up eating a majority of one thing (such as rice, or wheat, or whatever you're replacing whatever with) and as long as you feel good and you're getting all your nutrients, it should be just fine.

I'm a bit worried i have celiac disease, i just have no idea how to advoid gluten stuff so I can't test myself to see if thats causing the problems. How have you managed to live without wheat? I even brought some rye bread the other day so i could have something instead of bread, it tasted horrible. then i found out it had gluten in it anyway!

Learning to live without wheat is challenging but very doable. You just replace the breaded items you usually eat with non-gluten versions. All pastas are easily replaced with rice pasta (just have to cook it exactly to directions) and Food For Life Millet bread is the best gluten-free bread I have tasted so far. Just keep in mind that gluten free doesn't mean vegan, so double check all gluten free products for animal products!
