Well I must finally be getting this whole healthy lifestyle thing. Not one of those points was news to me. Please don't take this as a criticism of a good article, just as adulation for the CC community who has already educated me on so much of this.
I'm not sure although I've heard point 9 before (drink really cold water to expend calories) I think I've also heard from some reliable people on here that I trus that that is a bit of a myth.

I can't stand just *cold* water, but drinking ice cold water aggravates my heartburn to no end.
It does make a little bit of sense, but I'm not really sure it's really a great contributor to successful weight loss.

it's sort of scary that it recommends eating 900 calories.
drinking cold water burns calories.
but drinking room temperature water is better for your body because it's closer to the PH level in your body.

I thought water was pH 7 at whatever temperature...
Anyway, I just hate drinking water so much. I hardly ever decide to drink a glass of water because I really struggle to even swallow it. Unsure why. But the thought of chilled water makes my insides go all funny. eugh. lol.

Yeah, I agree.. you don't eat 900 calories... I'm not bookmarking that... not good info :)
I have found the key to drinking more water. I use True Lemon or True Lime packets. I also love the Crystal Light Iced Tea and Lemonade ones. I take a very large bottle of Poland Spring and take an iced tea and lemonade packet to make a tasty drink. This way I'm sure to drink enough water throughout the day.
I agree with not eating 900 calories, it is the main points that are pretty much in line with what my dietician has told me; therefore it seems like decent information.
Water, oh I did not like water before... now it is what I look for when I am thirsty. I prefer spring water with fresh lemon slices ;)

"Aerobic exercise is good for you but it is the anaerobic exercise that involves the lifting of weights that is going to transform fatty tissue into fat burning muscle."
This is not true. Fat cells are fat cells, they can shrink as the energy from the fat cells is used by the body, but the only way to get rid of them completely is liposuction. There was a recent study that showed that fatter children stay fatter because they make more fat cells gaining that weight, you can make new ones but they are there forever, you just have to reduce their density. To suggest that fat cells can be turned into muscle is like suggesting that you can change aluminum into wood - they are physiologically completely different cells.
The benefit of toning while doing cardio to lose weight is that the muscle tissue requires more energy to exist than the fat cells, and that will help your metabolism but will not burn nearly as many calories as the cardio itself. Also, it is good to do weight training so you don't get "bye-bye" arms, i.e. excessive loose skin. That is a nasty side effect of rapid weight loss from dieting alone.
I made the mistake and of doing as much weight training as cardio when I got serious about exercising more. This did not expedite any weight loss but I actually gained some weight in muscle mass. That's not entirely bad, but I think moderation is key here especially if you need to take off some pounds for your blood pressure/health. Getting a kickstart of weight loss from cardio helps maintain your motivation over time and you can gradually add weight training. That's just my experience, but my weight loss is coming pretty slowly. The upside to that, is that I hope it will stay lost. :)

The fact that they used 900 calories as an example is unfortunate. No one should ever go that low. However, the principle is sound. And, the other tips seemed good as well.
Hi Aradams,
Can you please elaborate your statement or any links would be helpful? Thanks in advance.

p001, this may answer your question

I also know from being pregnant, that if a woman gains a lot, she can increase her fat cells. I know I've seen articles on that.

I don't think the 900 calorie thing is that big of a deal. I seriously doubt it would cause any damage to do it for ONE day; however, rather than say "900 calories" just substitute "1200 calories" and cycle from 1200 to 1600 to 1100, etc. That's the main point of that one. The person who wrote it just made the mistake of saying "900" cal rather than 1200, but you don't have to take it literally. It's just a concept they were trying to convey.
#9 - Drink cold ice water.
This one seems weird. Why is my body working at all to raise the temperature of cold water to my body temp? Seems to me that this would just happen without my metabolism working at it, since once inside the body, the water is surrounded on all sides by warmer temperature. Is this right?

#9 appears to be true.. although I've heard it's a myth as well.. remember that Tobacco companies had Drs who said cigarettes don't cause cancer either so just about ever study has an opposite.. This study suggests that the water needn't be ice cold, although you could assume you'd have a greater metabolic effect the colder the water is.
Drinking 500 ml of water increased metabolic rate by 30% in healthy, normal-weight subjects. The increase of metablic rate occurred within 10 min and reached a maximum after 30-40 min. About 40% of the thermogenic effect originated from warming the water from 22 to 37 C. The total thermogenic response was about 24 Calories. It was estimated that drinking 2 liters of water per day would augment energy expenditure by approximately 96 Calories.
Cold water is absorbed faster in the body; sugar slows absorption.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 88(12):6015-9.It is theorized if not enough water is consumed, the kidneys do not function optimally, the liver takes over some responsibilities. The kidneys metabolize fat at half throttle.

It is not say you should eat 900 cals every day..Just once in a while..Most of you here I'll bet have done that through religous fasting or illness. That doesn't hurt you. When you eat different amounts of cals it keeps the boddy hopping as it cant get into a maintence..No one would ever suggest 900 cals every day..as we all know an average of 1200 is the magic number..:)
THANK you aradams! I was going to say that. You can't transform fat into muscle. And vice versa, muscle will never turn into fat. But the actual point was a good one. The more muscle you have, the more active your metabolism.
#9 is technically true, but doesn't make a big difference to the human metabolism, which is why it is touted as a myth. It's like saying, not eating the crumbs of your cheesecake will help you lose weight. Except that water is good for you, cheescake not so much.
For example, small birds often die of starvation in the winter months, not because they can't find enough food, but because they have to eat snow to stay hydrated and it takes a lot of energy for their little bodies to melt the snow in their bellies. (I guess technically they would then die of cold, or of dehydration, but you get the point.)
Since heat is a form of energy, the more heat you produce, the more cals you are burning- but it's such a small amount to bring the water to body temp that it doesn't really make a difference. Unless you ingest large amounts of supercooled water, or ice or snow, all at one time. But then you would get some vicious cramps, and maybe even hypothermia, so don't do that. :)

i don't think it's telling you to eat 900...it's just saying that if you're on a 1200 Calorie diet...you want to get the average of 1200 over a couple of days and not EXACTLY 1200 everyday...
as for cold water...i guess it makes sense...i don't think it's just telling you to drink cold water to lose weight...but if you drink water...your body is going to use more energy to "process" the cold water than it would to "process" regular water...so cold water would boost your metabolism more than regular water...
