Are tortilla chips any good by themselves?

Quote  |  Reply
This is rather embarrassing, but I must confess that I have never tried tortilla chips in my life. I have always been conscious about my weight, and have not allowed myself to eat any type of fried snack, for as long as I can remember. However, I recently found these tortilla chips at the store, and they have 200 calories per 50g serving, so I thought, why not?

I always hear people say they like to eat tortilla chips with cheese or salsa... My question is, are they alright on their own as well - without any dip? Please keep in mind that these chips are only "lightly salted"... so they have no nacho flavour or any other seasoning added...

Thanks!

I prefer them plain, actually... but then again, I might be considered weird because I like things like dry oats and plain bread.
i think they're okay, but...what's the point?  guacamole, man!
I don't like them plain very much, but salsa is good and good for you.  I get the mild, because the others are a little too hot for me.  If you don't like salsa, Guitless Gormet makes a lovely fat free bean dip.  It's tasty, and it's a great way to get some healthy beans into your diet.  I've also eaten low fat tortilla chips with chili, and even used them in place of crackers for things like tuna.  I like my whole grain crackers, but it's nice to have a change now and then.  Hormel makes a low fat turkey chili, and a vegetarian chili that are very good.  The only draw back is the sodium.  Sometimes I take some turkey chili and tortilla chips in for my lunch.  Add a veggie, and it makes a nice change from what I usually take.
I like them plain.. has a better taste than salted chips.

sometimes i eat it with salsa too, but i find that when i eat it with store bought, i get really grossed out and it bloats me.

you can try making some fresh salsa :-) it's very easy and healthy.
mix together chopped up fresh tomato,  finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cilantro & minced hot pepper. Season with lime juice, salt & pepper. It tastes soooo good the day after in the fridge.

I like to crunch them up on a salad, and use a bit of salsa for the dressing.  Add a bit of lean chicken and you have a very tasty taco salad without the bad for you stuff.

Trader Joes has some reeeeally good flax seed tortilla chips that are made with tomato, spinach, and garlic I believe. Very tasty alone! Although I prefer them with a little mashed up avocado, pepper, and salt of course. ;-)

I've used the small corn tortillas to make my own chips to bypass the salt and frying of store bought. Just slice up the tortilla, place on a cookie sheet, sprinke with your flavors and bake at 350 until as toasty and crispy as you like them. They're different but quite tasty. I use differnt types of seasoning on them to give them some flavor and keep calories down. I don't have them often though because they can be addicting if you are a carb junkie as I used to be.

I never tried to make them with the flour tortillas though and wonder how they would taste. I love how crispy those get when they're fried, but that's so not good for you lol.

Before I was caring about my weight and health, my ex and I could go through a bag of scoops chips and a 6 oz container of cheese and 6 oz of salsa mixed mixed together. Terrible but just one of those things once you start it's hard to stop. You might actually be better of not knowing what you're missing lol.

I've never had a lot of luck with portion control on chips of any kind.  So I've been eating tostadas, which are a flat, unsalted, circular version of tortilla chips.  One 6" diameter corn tostada is 50 calories.  I eat them with salsa topping as a snack (they're pretty bland without it), or as a piece of crispy flat bread with a meal.  I store them in a steel cookie tin to keep them crisp - they stay pretty fresh for 3-4 weeks.
I agree with the taco salad, so good and filling.  You can use ground turkey, tofu, laura lean beef, beans or whatever protein, fresh tomatoes (or salsa), lettuce, diced onion, jalepeno peppers, green peppers, fat-free sour cream, 2% kraft cheese.   Oohhh, that's what I am having for dinner!  I use the baked tortilla chips that only have 1 gm fat and 110 calories per oz, comes to around 300-400 total..but so balanced and yummy!
I like them plain. But they're also good with some salsa. Salsa has very little calories and is pretty good for you too.
It depends on the chip. A good tortilla chip is good on its own. But some generic thing like Tostito's is yucky. Of course, I live in the heart of Tex-Mex land and there are tons of fresh, locally made tortilla chips.
Thanks everyone! Since there are rather mixed oipinions here, I decided not to risk it, so I got the flavoured ones instead. =)
