Totally Confused About Burn Rate

Quote  |  Reply

I know this question has been asked a million times and I thought I knew the answer, but now I am totally confused!

How do I fairly accurately determine how many calories I burn in a day?  When do I enter activities?  For example, if I have selected Sedentary for my profile, what activities do I list?  Only activities beyond those that are Sedentary or all activities throughout the day including working, sleeping, etc.?

Thank you one and all!

You list those beyond Sedentary. Because you put Sedentary into your profile the burn rate meter thing automatically works out approximately how many calories you'll be burning throughout the day by doing that amount of activity. If you keep an eye on it it will gradually increase throughout the day even if you do nothing out of the ordinary because we are always using energy even by just sitting down so doing anything on top of that means you'll be burning more calories than the burn meter knows about. Hope this helps :)

I think your sedentary burn rate already includes sleeping and sitting still all day at work, so no need to log those again.

I would just add any additional non-sedentary stuff like walking, jogging, gardening, etc.

Its a little bit of guesswork at first, but when you get to a point where you can predict how much weight you will lose each week by eating a certain number of calories and then that amount of weightloss actually happens, you'll know your daily burn calculation is correct.

Hope that helps :)

Thank you both very much!  I have been doing this all wrong, but now I can fix it thanks to you!
