Totally random... puppy question!

Quote  |  Reply

I just got a 4 month old puppy, i have no idea what breed she is as i rescued her from the pound. Shes pretty thin and small now, around 15lbs id say...she has the coloring of a german shepherd, but quite fine-boned and she has the face of a smaller breed of dog.

Does anybody know how large she will mature to?

Thanks!

Does she has large paws?  This is sort of an indicator on how big she will get.

best bet is to take her to the vet.  Not only is it best for her health, but the vet could give you a good idea what breed/mix the dog is and be able to help with estimating a full grown size.

Good luck!

Nope, her paws are pretty small... actually the lady at the pound mentioned that to us!

The paws support their weight, so bigger paws usually mean a larger dog.  Smaller paws won't support a lot of weight.

As mentioned above, the vet will be able to give you a better idea of her breeding and adult weight.  They see all sorts of breeds and can usually pin it down to what she could be.

BTW my favorite dogs have been mixed breeds.  When I was a kid we had this dog that you could not tell what he was, just a Heinze 57 breed.  Best dog ever.

Awesome. Thanks both of you for your replies!

And I totally agree 100%... love those mixed breeds. I have a 10yr old collie who-knows-what-else dog and i love him to death... i think ill have to go on meds when he dies! :)

I did say usually, there are always exceptions.

BTW liveuorlife, enjoy the new puppy, I am sure that you will love her no matter what size she turns out to be.

You bet i will! I fought a long and hard battle with my parents getting her for a reason! :-) Thanks!

i remember when we first got our lab puppy he was about 8 months old and we went to the vets and she wouldn't believe he was that young till we showed her his birth certificate he was that big! his paws were HUGE even now he towers over much older dogs!

hehe reading your post reminded me of when our german shepard (male) got our jack russel (female)! i see people have posted about the paw size already so i wont bore you with that one! Just a bit bored so i thought i would post too!

Oh yes just so you know, the bitch had 4 pups, 2 died but 2 survived, they are very very ugly pups (bless them) but they cant help that - have shepard markings and a kind of mini body with a jack russel shaped head!! They are sweethearts, and were bigger than their mum at just 4 weeks old :O!!

If she's about four months, and 15lbs, they fill out till about a year I would guess.  So perhaps around 40lbs??  Maybe a bit more depending on how malnourished she is right now.  A vet would know better than me, though.

I don't know what the breed is - the pup might be a mix which would be hard to tell.
