A touch of grey....

Quote  |  Reply

I have recently discovered some grey hair. To be honest, I am a little upset about this, considering I am 27 and to me that seems a bit young for grey hair! It seems like I just graduated high school a second ago! Now I am going grey! I asked my parents and both didn't start going grey until the late 30's... I wonder what determines WHEN this happens to a person?

At what age did you start to notice some grey hairs? Did you just let it go wild? Do you dye over it?

Personally, I color my hair a lot anyway, and will most definitely continue to do so!

Also, do you think stress can cause grey hair, or is this just a myth?

Well, I'm about to be 37, and I first noticed what I thought to be a grey hair about a month ago.  I say "thought" because I have blond hair, so it was hard to tell by the light in comparison - but I could swear that it looked like it had less color than the strands surrounding it.  A couple of weeks later I decided to go strawberry blonde - no grey hairs now!  Wink

My hubby started going "salt and pepper" about 5 years ago, and we're the same age.

However, at what age a person goes grey is dependant on so many factors - heredity, sun exposure, nutrition, hormone levels, overall health, stress level etc.  It can't be pinned to any one thing.

My Mom got grays at 21, and I just noticed about 5 different ones in my hair, and I'm only 23!

It could be worse. Instead of it going gray, you could be losing it!

Good point nasuoni! It's not that big of a deal, I just think it's kind of strange...

Now that I think of it, there was a very sexy guy I went to highschool with, and at  19 he had salt & pepper hair which made him even sexier for some reason.

I have found 7 so far ( yes I am counting lol) and I just plucked them out.

No gray for me - I am 34 in 10 days.  Although, my grandmother, who is 95 is not completely gray.  For the most part, her hair is a dark ash blond with white "highlights" at the temples.  Yay for good genes!
This past year my 23 year-old guy friend starting getting grey hair because he was so stressed out working on his engineering masters...then it got worse because he started freaking out about his hair haha...but I like it :)

Good deal cheree89!

But the thing is, I wonder if genetics really have much to do with it. Like I mentioned, my parents didn't even start to see any grey's until their very late 30's and neither of them got much at all. Also my grandfather hardly had any at all and he was in his late 60's when he passed away. So maybe even though mine sprouted early, I wil only get a little bit? I hope so! heh

See laurdie11, I wonder if stress is a factor at all. I have been extrememly stressed out, and maybe that caused my little outbreak of greys? Hmmmmmm

Had to check out the thread because I love your title (it's my fave Grateful Dead song) :)

Oh, and I noticed gray when I was like, 24.  I've heard that it's best not to pluck them, though, because when they grow back in, they stick up and it makes them more noticeable... :)

Yeah one of my favorite Dead songs too pure:)

Yeah, I know that you are right about plucking them! I think I just panicked and just wanted to make them disapear! LOL

I found my first grey hair when I was 17.  I am now 29 (today) and I have them, but I color, so I don't see them all that often.  My uncle was TOTALLY grey by the time he was 19.

If you pluck one grey hair, five will grow back in it's place.

I started getting gray at 16. I'm now only 21 with a large patch of silver starting near the front of my head and working it's way back towards my neck. When my hair is in a ponytail, it looks like I have silver streaks. My dad was completely gray by 30. My mom only has the ocassional wispy streaks.

Now if it looked like Rogue from X Men, I would be perfectly okay with that. But I don't have super powers because of my silver hair. Boo.

It totally depends on the person.  It seems that brunettes go grey a bit earlier than blonds.  That may also be because it is easier to see.

My hubby is only 26, and he's starting to grey at his temples, and some random spots around his head.  I think a lot of it has to do with hair color, type, and stress.

I had a co-worker that was completely grey by the time she was 30.  Hooray for hair color!

Once I see that first strand of grey hair, I'm dying it immediately (I don't currently color my hair).

My partner and our son started going grey by 16.  My partner was completly grey by 35, and our son's not too far behind.  I think genetics play a significant role.  (I love grey hair, so of course, I have none.)

I started getting grey hair around 17-18. Now I'm 22, and I have a bunch. You can't really tell unless I put my hair up, but oh man is it there! My mom has a bunch of grey too, but I don't know if that has anything to do with mine. I dye my hair every once in a while and endure the grey in between. Most definately, I am dying right before my wedding!

I got my first greys my first year at uni (about age 18-19).  I dye my hair - but 'till I was 30 that was more to change the colour than to cover grey.  I just got a bunch of blond-ish highlights put in so that when the greys start to grow in again you shouldn't really be able to tell.  I've also noticed that if I change where I part my hair, that can often hide the greys (if they're growing back in).

I've been getting grey hair since I was 20 (now 27). It's not TOO bad, but yet bad enough that I have to dye it every 3 months.

I noticed my first grey hair shortly after I got pregnant with my first child.

I just let it go.  I now have a fair amount of grey.  I consider them highlights.

I don't dye my hair.

I believe stress can cause grey hair.  Look at John McCain.  He was white haired when he came back from POW camp.  OTOH, he wasn't exactly young back then.
