How do I train myself to eat if I'm not hungry?
Asked by anonymous on Nov 05, 2009 in Health Conditions

I really need to put on weight but I have never been a big  eater.  I don't like breakfast so I skip that. I eat 2 meals a day and I'm just not hungry enough to snack. How do I train myself to eat if I'm not hungry because I know this is necessary for weight gain?

Answer

I can see that you are age 40 with a small frame and a BMI of 19, which is classed as a healthy weight.  If your health is good and your weight steady, you might not need to gain weight, but everyone should eat a balanced diet.  (You need about 2100 calories a day.) For breakfast, train yourself to sip on fruit juice and a liquid meal replacement; aim for 300-400 calories.  Breakfast will then make you hungry for lunch. Regular exercise stimulates (and regulates) the appetite and so do a cardio-type exercise for 30+ minutes a day. Also, think about whether your poor appetite has a medical cause, like food intolerance or chronic depression.  For more help with your diet, visit a registered dietitian.
