treadmill or eliptical?

Quote  |  Reply
i used to be a runner and so i would use the treadmill, then i joined a new gym that had really good eliptical trainers. it seems like i burn more calories for less effort on the eliptical, but in the long run i wonder which one burns more calories/gets rid of fat? thanks!

The elliptical always seems to get me sweating more, but I try to do both when possible.
I get about the same workout on either one, but I go by my pulse rate rather than my speed.  If I'm going to be exercising indoors I'll choose an elliptical.  It's much easier on the knees, and I like to save my knees for running outdoors when I can :)
I've been using treadmill to  train for running.  At some point I'll switch over to running distance outside and using treadmill for intervals.  So, I like treadmill better because my goals are running distance and running speed.  Time on the elliptical just feels like minutes on a machine.

I like using the ellipticals that also exercise the arms.

And there's something you can do on an elliptical that you can't do on a treadmill: go backwards.  Uses different muscles!

I'm doing both.  I like the elliptical because it does seem to get my heart rate up quicker, and I think I burn more calories in a given amount of time.  I have also started doing a walk-run-walk program on the treadmill, because I want to work my way up to running 5K and 10K runs this spring.  If I had to choose only one machine, I guess I would choose the elliptical, and work on running outside.
