Treadmill settings and mph
I've been trying to keep track of my activity through the activity log, but I never know what category to use. I am wondering if most treadmill settings, like 5.0 for example is equivalent to 5 mph. I've been jogging at this setting on the treadmill and I know I'm not running quickly, but it feels like running to me, an inexperienced runner.
Does anyone know how treadmill settings relate to the categories on here?
I don't have an answer, but I want to know too!
I use a treadmill that has different exercise modes. You can put in your weight and all sorts of stuff. If I don't use that one, I go 3 mph, 4% grade for about 30min - 1 hour. I like the elliptical too. Are these machines acurate when they say how much you burn?
What speed is running and what speed is jogging?
Yes that would be 5mph. What I do is a mixture. I walk and run for an hour anywhere from 4.2 - 5.2 uphill. Since the treadmill tells you calories burned I just add the activity in and put in the number of calories the treadmill showed. None of the counts are 100%, but it's something to go off of. You could look into getting a watch that measures your heart rate and gives you your calories burned.
Some treadmills (or other cardio machines) are more accurate than others for calories burned. If you have to input your weight and age, it's more accurate than if you don't (in fact, I'd say ignore any machine that doesn't take weight into account). I've heard that machines should be calibrated every so often, so if your gym has 10000 users and never a repair guy, it's probably not as accurate as a gym with 100 users and a monthly repair. But usually you don't have good info on the repair schedules of your gym.
When I had access to machines, I found the counts to be relatively consistent with inputing my average speed into CC, and the math pretty much worked out for my weight loss. I've seen people write that the machines drastically overestimated calories burned (more common) or, based on their HRM with calorie burn function, underestimated (less common).
I'd be a little surprised if the machine didn't have written on the display somewhere that the speed was in mph. I have seen bikes that displayed watts, and ellipticals that displayed... actually, I have no idea what they displayed, but I don't think I've ever seen a treadmill that didn't give mph or km/h.
Thanks for the help! I guess I'm actually running then!

the above website is pretty awesome in terms of calculating how much you burn by doing just about ANY exercise! Just plug in your stats and the type of exercise you do (it has speeds & treadmill inclines) and there you have it... the average amount of calories burned for a person your size, age & weight!
That's a pretty awesome calculator... here's another one you can try...

It allows you to type in your incline (I like to do intervals of 8-10%), your speed, your time and your weight. Should be pretty accurate. I've noticed that because I do such a strong incline, I'm actually burning more calories than CC's "uphill" setting. I just adjust the amount of time when I enter it so that it is equal to the calories I burned according to that calculator.
Thanks for the websites ladies! I'm sure they'll help once I've increased my endurance!
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
