Treadmill vs. CC

Quote  |  Reply

Basically I tested CC's take on their activity browser. I was pretty curious because I looked up walking and it was a pretty low number for calories burned per hour!

CC says that for brisk walking on a hard, flat surface at 3.5 mph 113 calories are burned in half an hour.

So I got on my treadmill, set it to 3.5 and flat, and walked 30 minutes. The result: my treadmill said I burned 183 calories!

...uhhhh.

That is a pretty big discrepancy. Which one is correct?

anyone?

both are estimates.  what does your treadmill know about you?  CC bases calculations on the age, height, weight, and gender that you enter into the system.  but neither can account for your fitness and exertion.

well, my treadmill just bases it off of my speed, time, and incline. I suppose CC factors in more info, but would that mean it's more accurate?

I found the same thing - treadmill at gym read 200, CC said about 165.  Then we got new machines at the gym Monday and they read closer to CC.  I'd probably trust CC more as they factor in age and gender, but both are still estimates.

Definitely CC would be closer.  CC at least uses your body weight and gender.  The treadmill only uses an "average size person".  I found CC says about 1/2 the calories that my treadmill reports because I am a smaller person than "average size".
