TRIGGER scents!----weird!

Quote  |  Reply
Ever had a SMELL trigger a memory?

It's been happening to me a LOT recently---

yesterday it was the following:

apple cider

toast

They both made me like STOP in my tracks and just..."remember" things...:)
and I found that most often, the smells have something to do with FOOD!
I LOVE THAT~!!!!

others smells that make me do the SAME thing are:
pine trees
the perfume "Eternity"
the cologne "Old Spice" or "Brute"
Tide/Downy
Cinnamony scents
pancakes cooking
EXTRA wintergreen gum
freshly cut grass..

What are some of your "triggers"?

The smell of Fall triggers my days growing up on Long Island, New York!!! It is my favorite time of year!!!!
Every once in a while on a really hot day in the summer (like 35'C is really hot up here) the air takes on a summer-y smell (don't know how else to describe it) and it always reminds me of a family trip to Florida when I was 11. I remember getting off the plane and just thinking how strange (yet good) the air smelled, and it was like that the whole week we were there. Maybe it always smells that way? I dunno.

The smell of a turkey dinner cooking gives me a really warm memory of family gatherings.

The weirdest smell I take comfort in is gasoline. My dad's snowmobile always reeked of it, and my brother used to pull us round a field for hours with our sleds tied to the back of it. We spent so much time out there when we were kids. *sigh* I miss the innocence of childhood.

oh and fresh cut grass does it for me, too :)
There's an industrial bakery (Turanos) near my house, close enough for me to smell the bread baking. Now, wherever I am that I smell bread baking, I think of my neighborhood.

The smell of rain, which I equate to that smell of the wind right before a major thunderstorm in the summer, reminds me of when I was growing up and my Fa and I would be hiking and Fa would get a whiff of that and turn to look up to the sky to try to tell how long we had to get out of the elements.

I love the smell of cold winter weather after fresh snow on a feburary morning. It reminds me of when I was 6 in China and I would walk to school every morning and just look at the falling snow.

Others are like Bounce dryer sheets, my mom's cooking, and Asian bakery smells bring back memories, all different of course! XD

the smell of large bodies o water, or humid air remind me of chicago! And the smell of bananas reminds me of garbage...
Always buy a new brand of lotion before a vacation, and use it a lot the whole time! You will always be able to open up that bottle and remember exactly how it felt to be on that vacation. I swear it works.

The sweet smells of Spring flowers in the meadow near my home brings about a memory of the soft scented perfume my grandmother would ware, and the gentle but firm hugs she would greet me with whenever we went to visit.  The smell of fresh baked bread reminds me of My mother standing in the kitchen wearing an apron and a smile as she delighted in my eager inquiry to the location from where the heavenly smell was coming.  I think I was about 4 years old then and She still makes wonderful bread.

I walked through my son's school lunch room and felt like I had slipped back in time.  Not just "oh I remember school lunches" but "Holy cow - Chipped beef over mashed potatoes!" sniff sniff, burritos & scrambled eggs.  I had visions of elementary school, then flashes of middle school and my first kiss.  It was so crazy.  I hadn't stepped into a lunchroom since my own school days so it had been quite a while.  Things I'm sure I haven't thought of since they actually happened 15 years ago just came flooding back so vividly.  I have a blush brush that has this perfume scent. I close my eyes and see a highschool boyfriend.  If we can do all that from a few smells, imagine what it would be like to be hypnotized and remember it.
