Trouble digesting Fat?

Quote  |  Reply

I have been watching what I've been eating for the past month +/- and recently noticed that things that contain even a medium amount of fat seems to run through me faster than a Big Mac and fries! I end up in the bathroom about a half hour later. This happened tonight after eating an IHOP Light egg substitute omelette.  Specs:  Spinach, Mushroom & Tomato Omlette (IHOP)
Serving Size: 1; Calories: 330, Total Fat: 7g, Carbs: 37g, Protein: 30g            and it happened a few nights ago after teriyaki chicken drumettes (with skin).

It's almost like taking Alli (from what I have heard) and kinda unpleasant too! Does anyone know why this is happening? Suggestions?

I have lost 8 lbs so far so I'm not complaining, but still I would like to eat out without having to spend the next couple of hours near a bathroom!

Thanks

My body definitely has an issue with digesting fats, but it is because of damage that I did (I have anorexia). I can eat as much candy as I want, as long as it is fat free, and it doesn't bother me at all, but even an ounce of coffee cream will set me off.

Could be a food allergy.  I have plenty of food allergies so I know what it's like.  The problem is you are also losing essential vitamins and minerals.  You should see a doctor if it continues.

I noticed that too. Before CC my diet I had fatty food frequently. Since I cleaned up my diet, I need to run to the bathroom if I happen to have something greasy. I would think my body was just not used to so much fat at once.

I think it happens to me if it is something with a lot of saturated fat, so a pizza would do it, but once I ate a whole avo and nothing happened.

It may not be solely the amount of fat but something else in the food as well.   I've no idea what a 'light egg substitute' is but you could have reacted to it.  And presumably teriyaki chicken has a few interesting ingredients?... msg?.  Having said that, my mother can't eat chicken skin without being horribly ill....

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone but I think my trouble may be as I_am_nat says - my body is adjusting to healthier eating and is dumping out the excess fats, specifically the saturated fats.

GI Jane: I don't have a clue what a light egg substitue is either but I have had that egg dish before without this reaction. The Teriyaki chicken drumettes is an old standby for my family when we can't all sit down at one time for dinner so nothing new there either. I have to go look but I'll bet there is a lot of saturated fat in chicken skin. Think I'll just steer clear of saturated fats for a while.

Good news though, lost another .5 lbs yesterday so things aren't all bad! Have a great Memorial Day weekend and remember to pull the skin off the chicken before hitting that grill!

I think the interesting thing is to think back... If your system gets this upset from the occasional revert to a fatty diet, just think how stressed it out it would have been in the past if you ate like this on a regular basis!   I have a pet theory that a lot of people get used to existing in a state of 'not-all-that-well-but-not-ill-enough-to-see- a-doctor-ness'... thinking it's normal......  and it's only by making improvements and feeling so much better that they can appreciate just how rough they must have felt before.

Having said that, if food continues to shoot through your guts if you eat a little fat you might want to mention it to your doctor next time you see them.  Could be something medical.

EEEEYUCK GI-Jane! I know I fell into your pet theory of 'not-all-that-well-but-not-ill-enough-to-see- a-doctor-ness' and I have been only watching my fat intake for about the past month!

Will do on the doc if it keeps happening, but I have mixed emotions on that. On the one hand I DID lose another .5 lb quite easily - and on the other I would hate to make myself a beautifully skinny but unhealthy corpse! (JK!)

If you see a doctor, you might want to ask them to test you for pancreatic insufficiency, as it is possible that your pancreas is not producing the digestive enzymes necessary to digest fat.  I suggest this because your symptoms sound just like those of a family member of mine who was diagnosed earlier this year.  He wound up quite gaunt before figuring out why eating all but the tiniest bit of fat sent him straight to the toilet.  He now takes digestive enzymes before eating and can tolerate much more fat in his diet than before.  If this problem keeps up, I would definitely bring it up to a physician!  Better to keep a low fat diet by choice than by necessity!

Edit: I also recall hearing from a doctor that it is important to treat this condition not only so that you can digest fats, but also crucial fat soluble vitamins (A, D, etc.).
