The oxalic acid in chocolate and cocoa can block calcium absorption because oxalic acid binds with calcium in the GI track to form a soap that cannot be absorbed. But there is only a little oxalic acid in cocoa and there is a lot of calcium in milk. For instance, in an 8-ounce glass of milk, chocolate flavoring cancels out 6 of 300 milligrams of calcium, an insignificant amount. Children should be allowed to drink chocolate milk if it increases their milk intake. Foods that are very high in oxalic acid include rhubarb, spinach, chard and beet greens.
