Is it true that, for women, their breast become smaller when they lose weight?

Quote  |  Reply

First off, let me apologise I just made an account with the site today and am not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question.

Second, I ask this because it's what my mother has told me. I am what you would call a "small" girl (least that's what I was catagorized when I did the wrist and finger thing) with a rather large bust (curse from my mothers side). I've been told I need a breast reduction, like many of my other family members, but theres no way I could pay for it and my insurence would never cover it. My mother said that if I work out, usually the first place you "lose it" is your breast, is this true?

Thanks in advance for all your input! Smile

Everyone loses from different places differently. If when you gain weight, it goes first to your bust, it'll probably be the last place you lose from, but maybe not.

In other words, who knows! Only way to know is to try.

(And yes, this is a perfect place to ask this question - welcome.)

You lose weight from all over your body, but if you have a lot of fat in your breasts, versus breast tissue, you will probably see a noticable reduction in your breasts as you lose weight. But you will also be losing weight from the rest of your body as well. Considering your family's history, it might help (especially if you're a little heave to start with then it should definately help some) but the part of your breasts that aren't fat won't get any smaller.

If you are overweight or obese I'm guessing it would help you a bit. I know right now I'm a high C/low D, but when I was skinny I was a large B/lowC. So I lost a good size and maybe a little more. If you have room on the rest of you to lose too I'd say go for it! =)

Hello, and welcome!

I would say that it is entirely dependent on your body type. There will be women here who will say that they lost several cup sizes, and there will be those who will tell you they saw little to no change. Breasts are made of fat, and just like skinny women with bellies or heavier women with hourglass figures, where you carry your fat is totally dependent on your genetics.

If you have family members that are slender, but still have large breasts...chances are good that yours will stay that way as well.

For me, I was an E cup when I weighed 238. Now, at around 145-150, I'm a small D/large C. Almost all the women in my family have boobs - so I was surprised to lose as much as I did. The downsize to loosing the volume is that you'll probably lose your "perk" :)

When I lost 30 lbs last year, I seem to have lost the weight everywhere except my breasts...I have a very Dolly Partonesque profile as a result, and bras in my size (32G!!!) are quite difficult to find. On one hand I love my boobs, on the other hand I often wish I was a more normal size, so I could jump, run etc.

From what i know breast tissue is mainly fat soo....you loose weight/fat you'll loose cup size.

i mean last year i went from like 130-135 to like 90-ish pound, i looked like a 10 year old boy, how bad is it with you?

i went from a C to an A, now ive gained the weight back i think im at a B, its sad, i dont know whether ill ever get back to where i was, any suggestions?

it would vary depending on the person id guess, where their fat gets taken from etc. like none ever seemed to be taken from my stomach (that could also be the eating disorder talking) but i noticed a lot went in my shoulders/upper arms, now ive gained, i can see it back again, its quite an obvious spot for me

I lost 30 lbs and havent seen a change in my boobs--granted I have 80 or 90 more lbs to go.

What I want to know, is how you can tell the difference between breast tissue and fat?   Im a D cup at 222 lbs, but at 130 or 140, I dont know how much will be left...

from personal experience.. mine have never changed. ive been a 38 D as far back as a remember.. and ive fluctuated weight like crazy over the past few years. from 220 to 120, to 210, to 190 currently. never changed. go figure.. like everyone said it will depend on your body

Thank for all your help and suggestions!

I've actually gained about 20 pounds in the last year, which mainly went to my stomach and a little to my boobs. So either way, i'll be trying to work that all off. Right now I'm around 135-137 and I'd like to be 110ish (I'd say 100 but that might be pushing it). I used to wear a c cup, now I fear it's a d cup (I haven't actually been fitted since I gained my weight simply because I gained weight).

As Jessicasbc mentioned, how would one know the difference between breast tissue and fat?

Questobefit mentioned that my breast tissue will most likely stay they same (and therefore my breast size, although I will lose the "fat") Is there any way that you can lose the breast tissue? To be honest I simply thought your breast were just.. fat. :/

Again thanks for all the input!

In my experience when you feel your breasts the fat is more or less usually on the surface above the breast tissue and not at all that sensitive. If you know how to self check your breasts for lumps, you can sort of use the same idea to check to see where your boob ends and the fat begins. Even through fat you can usually feel a difference as the breast tissue is a loot less flexible. It might vary from person to person. I know in my personal experience I will never be smaller than I large B.. probably always at least a C.

My guess is that with larger breasts its a lot harder to tell what will and won't go though =( I have full Ds right now though and the not fatty part is still just as big as its always been. I'm not very good at explaining things but I'm sure a doctor could help much better than me. Or just randomly poking around from the base of your breasts up. Its important to really know your breasts anyways to look for lumps.

Your breasts are made up of fat, mamary glands, and lymph nodes. The latter 2 won't change in size (unless you're pregnant for the glands or you get a bad infection for the nodes). if I find any helpful information I'll be sure and let people know.

Edit: http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/M/m ammary_glands.html

there, that explains the anatomy of breasts a lot better than I do. And adipose tissue is a fancy way of saying fat. =)

I've seen a 2 cup size difference between my lightest and heaviest weights.  My body type loses from top (starting with the face) and goes down.

from my experience it is true, my friend is anorexic, weighs 85 pounds down from 160, and she dosnt even have a chest anymore.

It depends. When I lost 22lbs my boobs did not shrink. I guess it runs in the family.

Yeah, boobs are pretty much all fat. It really depends on genetics where you lose the weight from, as everyone else is saying. When I weighed 230 lbs and I was a nice full D cup, my boobs were pretty much the only thing I liked about my body. Now that I'm down to 155, I'm a B. If I lose much more weight, I'll end up with no boobs at all. My mom is rather flat chested, so I guess I take after her. Frown Oh well, that's what push-up bras are for!

If your family are all large-busted enough to have needed breast reductions at a normal weight, I'm afraid you're probably out of luck... a large part of your build is genetic. I'm not sure why you'd be considering a reduction if you're only a D cup though. It's a perfectly 'normal' bust size.

I was a C cup at 265lbs and I'm still a C cup at 200 (thank goodness - I'd hate for my bust to get any smaller than it already is!)

I've lost 20 pounds so far (in the last 6 months).  I went from a small C cup to a small B cup.  Just bought new bras this weekend.

Xcetra

my girlfriend and I lost the same amount of weight at the same time. I have gone down more than a cup (overflowing C to barely there B) and my ribs stick out as much as my boobs. My girlfriend is the same size (large) she started out as. when I was underweight years ago, I had "gymnast's boobs". my problem is not only are the small, but have always hung low.

i lost alot out of my bust size i went from a 38hh to a 32gg .. but everyone is different x

It is true for me. Like you, my breasts were bigger than the norm and I was absolutely positive I would be going in for a reduction. I hated them and would end up near tears in high school and college because I was an athlete and they just got in the way. I've also always been a rather conservative dresser and couldn't wear a lot of simple clothes (like spaghetti strap tanks) because they drew too much attention to my chest.

Now I'm happy to report that my body and my breasts are both normal size. I can wear almost anything, even things fitted or with low necklines, and still feel tasteful and not like I'm falling out everywhere or straining buttons. Also, when I run, I can just wear a basic sports bra and not have to double up for extra support. Tension between the shoulder blades and lower back has almost completely disappeared and my posture has improved.

Advice, take care of your skin as you lose weight. Mine were a bit "loose" initially, but once my body adjusted to the weight loss the skin began to tighten up. I've also made sure to meet my vitamin and mineral requirements and moisturize with natural oil based products daily.

yea its what Ive heard. Ive fluctuated with my weight from my freshman year of high school all the way til now and mine have changed with my weight too!Undecided

Kajikit,

While a D cup might be a "normal"  bust size it causes problems with me - my neck, shoulder, and back are in pain, I'm constantely slumping over, either standing or sitting. Even in the shower I have to hold my breast up with my arm because I slump over and it feels like I'm just being pulled towards the ground. These are the reasons why I've considered a reduction.

Skookum,

I know exactly how you feel. I wear a regular bra, a sports bra (sometimes two) and then an undershirt with a built in bra 24/7, even to bed. It's so tiresome anymore. I put coco butter lotion on every day after my shower, should I do anything more for when/if I lose any weight?

To everyone else,

Again thank you so much for your input and advice, it really means a lot!
