Is Truvia really all natural from a plant?
Asked by chickenlil007 on Sep 27, 2009 in Nutrition

I prefer not to use artificial sweeteners but I've been wondering if Truvia really is all natural from a plant and made without chemicals.   Is it just another version of Splenda?  What make it have no calories?

Answer

Truvia™ really is a plant by way of the food lab.  Its ingredients are of plant origin but it is man-made and so it is not really “natural”. The active substance in Truvia is rebiana, the purified extract of stevia.  Stevia is a herbaceous plant with sweet tasting leaves and the extracted flavor doesn't contain calories; however, Truvia packets are not 100% rebiana.  Erythritol is mixed with the rebiana extract to tone down its licorice aftertaste.  Erythritol is another natural extract made from fermented fruit, and because erythritol it is a sugar alcohol, it has minimal calories.  Read more about rebiana and Truvia at the Calorie Count blogs.
