Trying to figure out how to proceed with new excersizing plan.
Long story short.. I'm 6'7'', I started at 350, got down to 280, had surgery, got a second job, stopped working out for a few months, got up to 315, started taking it seriously again and back down to 300.
Been able to stick with it fairly well, but I've only essentially been doing ellptical and then some weights (free and machines). I want to try doing the couch to 5k thing.
Question is, how can I incorporate the weights with the running thing, or can I? I know the couch to 5k is 3 days a week. When would I do the weights? I would just assume it would be on of the days opposite of the running, but I just was wondering what other people did or think I should do. Now I don't do a lot of weights, and I'm not doing it to build muscle size. I also just use a few of the machines at my apartment then a few free weight excersizes I found on the site. I'm always sore the next day from the weights so I was thinking that maybe that wouldn't work out so much with the trying to run. I've never ran in my life and I know it's a whole other world from using the ellptical, so I just wanted some advice.
Thanks
how fast does your body recover from the runs? for the first couple of weeks, i would give yourself at least 2 days off in the week. do 2 days of strength training, maybe do easy runs the day after weights. that would be my suggestion. you can then add more intensity, longer workouts, more workouts, etc from there. just listen to your body, there's time to push yourself after a couple of weeks.
Well, I'm not sure how my body does because I've never ran. I've done the ellptical 6 days a week and I'm able to do it alright. Every other day I do weights and do only 20 minutes or so on the ellptical.
I'm switching from ellptical to trying to run, it's just time to change it up. Thats why I'm wondering how that would affect the weights. I planned on running/jogging 3 days a week.
It wont "affect the weights." It is VERY common, at any rate, and recommended by some expert coaches, to alternate weight training with running. When I was a beginner runner I did alternating days of running and intense weight training with one day off a week, and I was fine. I have continued to follow the same routine with much success. Just take it easy/day off if you have any soreness and be careful if any acute pain develops, of course.
Make sure you get proper running shoes, too.
