Trying to gain weight. Need Help

Quote  |  Reply

Hello everyone. My name is Miles. I am 17 Years old 5ft 8in and 140lbs. I have been trying to gain weight, and more muscles for the past 5 months, or so. I have tried almost everything there is. At first, I attempted to just eat fatty food, and a lot of vegetable daily. However, nothing happened for 2 months. After that I stopped working out and ate a lot more fast food (twice a week); nothing happened again.

Recently, I have tried eating only health food that have a lot of proteins and good fats. Nothing again! instead I lost a few pounds. I work out but I do NOT do any weight lifting. I usually do about 100 push ups, 50 sit ups, 25 leg up, and 30 pull ups. I do other workout using pull ups but I don't know the exact name. I also jog from school which is about 1.5 miles. I stopped running the past 3 weeks and instead started walking.

My friend who is a bodybuilder suggested that I drink protein shake called whey protein which I researched about. No known side effects. However, I do not know what to mix it with, how much to take, or when to take it. I don't trust my friend because he take about 6 of those whey proteins daily and consumes over 5000 calories without them easily.

I am trying to gain a little more mass to my muscles about 10 pounds. Can someone help me with what to eat more of and what exercise/ training I should do? However, I would like to keep the amount of cuts I correctly have.

I try to eat about 5-6 eggs daily(boiled). 3 at night and 3 in morning. I eat plenty of fruits(apples, oranges, grapefruits, cherry, banana everyday). I eat enough of vegetable(carrots[a lot], broccoli, spinach, and tomato).

My workouts are always at 12Am- 12:30 and then I eat 3 eggs and go to sleep. I wake up at 8-9 am.

EDIT: I also don't know which Whey protein I should buy (there are 3 choices). I also don't know what to mix them with. To Mods: if this is the wrong forum please move it to correct forum. Thankz!

Srry for bad grammar

To gain weight, insofar as my understanding, you don't need to be eating so awfully much protein - it strains the kidneys - a good average is 1.1 g of protein per lb of body weight, or so I've read. On top of that, 30% of kcal are recommended to come from fats and then whatever remainder of kcal that you need to gain (BARE MINIMUM 2,500 kcal/day) ought to come from carbs. I don't think there is any 100%-solid ratio and I don't believe that ratio matters as much as people make it out to matter, but if you're the kind of person like me who likes to know these things, there you go.

That being said, I do take a protein supplement because it is cheaper than buying meat and easier to get down with the quantity I am required to eat, and I buy Designer Whey in the chocolate flavor. I mix it with 8 oz of skim milk and a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (Rich Milk Chocolate flavor) and it really is not half bad. Actually pretty darn good.

I can't advise you on exercise except to aim for fewer reps and higher weights and little-to-no cardio in order to put on muscle. Good luck, I'm sure some other people will have more advice to offer on here.

Thank you Chemgirl. I just got one question, what is Kcal?? I bought this whey Protein is it good?

BiPro Instant Whey Protein Isolate Supplement

From this website https://www.biprousa.com/

kcal = Calorie = 1,000 calories (a "calorie" with a little-c by definition is the amount of heat required to raise 1 g of water by 1 degree Celsius).

1 kcal = 1 nutritional Calorie as you would read it on the back of a nutrition label, i.e. when you see that an apple has 72 calories to be technically correct it should be 72 kcal or 72 Calories... I was a science major in college so it's just habit to me to write "kcal" when referring to nutritional caloric intake. =) I really don't know anything about supplements except that whey is the best type of protein for the body in the sense that it is the most easily used, so I'm sure any type of whey protein is fine. I like Designer Whey b/c it is cheap as much as anything else.

Okay, so in your opinion. How much more should I be eating. I mean I am eating so much and I gain no weight whatsoever.

try to add some peanut bbutter in your protein shake.

Or let say you drink sim milk drink whole.

Things like this will make you gain weight.

I've been having 2tbsp PB for like one week and I gained a pound =].

What do you mean Peanut Butter? Just add it? Isn't it very too thick

no not if you put it in the blender.

If you add it to the blender with the milk and the protein powder it should taste just fine.

So I should just add Milk, PB, and the Whey Protein??

yes. If you like really thick protein milk shakes add a frozen banana in there.

And how much water. What is the ratio? I read on the web that i shouldn't listen what the company who sells it say. They just want you to use it more so you buy it again..faster.

Gaining weight, or losing weight for that matter, don't have to be this complicated.  It's a simple equation:  to gain weight, you have to take in more energy (calories) than you burn.  3500 calories equals one pound.  You probably have a high metabolism, and you exercise intensely, so you will need a lot of calories to gain weight.  I'm very petite (5'2") and I need over 3000 calories to gain weight very slowly and I am sedentary.

To begin with, you should track everything you eat for a day or 2 to actually figure out how much you're eating right now.  Then, add 500 calories a day to gain 1 pound a week, or add 1000 calories a day to gain 2 pounds a week.  You really don't need protein powders or supplements to gain weight, it's much easier to just eat real food.  But be smart and pick high calorie foods so you can keep your portions fairly normal.  Here are some foods that might help you gain:

  • nuts (1 oz is usually 170+ calories)
  • peanut butter
  • whole milk
  • smoothies
  • full-fat cheese, ice cream, yogurt, etc
  • whole wheat pasta
  • whole wheat bread or bagels
  • dark chocolate
  • dried fruit
  • fish
  • meats
  • eggs
  • juice
  • healthy oils (canola, olive, etc)
  • trail mix
  • granola
  • oatmeal
  • protein bars or shakes
  • veggies with olive oil or salad dressing
You'll probably need close to 4000 calories to gain while you're exercising.  Most people find it easier to have 3 meals and 3 snacks, to spread the calories out.  Good luck;  Gaining weight is hard!

Thanks a lot swimfan. Here is my problem though. The food I eat is mostly my mothers cooking, or mine. It foreign, and there is really no chance to find out how much calories, or other stuff it contains.

I eat all those food on your list except
-Dark Chocolate, Milk is more delicious
-Healthy Oil
-Protein bars
-Trail Mix

Everything else I eat.

It's 1g per Kg of body weight not per pound for minumum amounts of protein intake on a daily basis.

Can i just to 1g per point / 2-10?

Okay, I changed up what I eat for a 5 days now. I eat a huge amount. Nothing happened again?

In the morning(9:00am), I eat 2 scrambled eggs with yellow cheese with 1 boiled egg and orange juice. When I come back from school (11:15), I eat 2 sandwiches that have pb and jelly with 2c chocolate milk. At (1:30-2:00), I eat again, another sandwich with turkey breast, or another meat, with another boiled egg and orange juice. At 5 I eat beans, and something my mother cooks. At 7 pm, I a huge bowl or rice, and another egg. At 10 I eat 1 tuny fish sandwich and something else my mother cooks for me.

This is what I eat everyday and I gain nothing. In fact, I have LOST weight. WTF? How long does it take before I get to notice any weight gain?

I suggest you try lean beef or chicken breast.

Ill give you a picture of what i ate today. i had around 132 g of protein. hold on.
