Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club

Quote  |  Reply
I am interested in finding others who have been struggling for a long time with losing the "last 10 lbs". .  I've been battling to lose 10 lbs for many years.  Actually, I've lost 10 in the last year but I needed to lose 20 a year ago (not just 10).

I run, bike and swim now and have been participating in running 5k's and triathlons.  I have firmed up but would like to wear a size 8 comfortably.  I may want to go on to a size 6 next.

I think that if I had some friends with the same goals, then I would stay motivated.  Maybe we can share ideas and recipes.

Let me know if you are out there and interested.

P.S. I'll weigh in after the swim
Hey guys! Sounds like everyone is doing well and are still motivated! I am working on trying to keep my appetite under control. I Managed to keep my intake under 1400 yesterday.

Tonia-the only thing different I did has been exercising 6x a week. Maybe that increased my appetite, makes sense anyway.

Ohio-Good for you!!!!!! Celebrate with something special for yourself! Not food related of course!

My scale was back down this am. 131.6 so I feel much better than I did yesterday. I exercised this morning. I wasn't able to yesterday, too busy with the kids.

I start school myself next week, same day as my kids. It is a challenge to eat good when you are under stress and time constraints, will be a challenge. It was last year. I did good most of the year, until the last 3 months. I found myself eating carbs to stay awake to work on my papers. BAD!

Have a great day ladies!
Hip, Hip, Hooray for OHIO45!!  We are so proud of you for the progress you are making.  Hope the bike shopping goes well.  I am also glad you were able to enjoy a glass of wine & steak and still make progress.

Weigh-in: 141.6; up 0.8 from my last weigh-in.  I wish it could have been a loss but I'm not too concerned.  I guess I'll be dying my own hair.  Usually after being out of town for a week I would be 5 lbs. up on the scale so this was an improvement.  I was 140 on the 10th so I am going to go back to the days before the 10th and see what I did.

CC1170: We'll be here for you when you start back to school and we're going to come looking for you if we don't hear from you.  The increased exercise causing your hunger to increase makes a lot of sense.

tonia
Tonia~Thank you for your encouragement. I need it right now!

I consumed around 1700 calories yesterday. Just having to write that down is making me feel bad. That is why being on this site is good. Knowing I am accountable for what I eat and my weight, while it may not make me motivated enough to stop eating too much right now, is keeping me very aware of my actions.

I may not get to exercise today. Too much going on. I have an appointment early this morning and my daughter has one later. Then she has piano and goes with a friend to Martial Arts. Maybe I could fit a walk in or something during her MA time.

I need to get the exercise in right now. Most important thing if I am ever to get trully motivated to drop this 10lbs.

I am telling you losing this last 10 is the hardest thing I have ever encountered. Because you cannot cheat or eat over and above your minimum caloric intake. It is tough. I know you guys know that.

Well my goal of 1400 continues for today. Try to be active and fit exercise in.

Have a great day!

Hello everyone!

I went on another vacation and then immediately started school on Wednesday.  It is just all consuming.  Starting a new school year takes every ounce of energy you have.  I have been fitting in one hour long workout per day,but haven't been able to do any doubles.  Maybe once things settle down.

Congratulations to Ohio!  Be very proud.   Good luck with your bike. It is sometimes a challenge to find a good fit.  Are you working with folks who specialize in bikes?

cc1170, Don't feel bad about 1700.  Take a look at your analysis.  Were they good healthy calories?  See it as just feeding your body some extra fuel.  Good luck.

Tonia,  Sorry I haven't been on line lately!  It is so helpful to read over your posts and stay motivated.  Keep it up!

Must go!

Di
Hey,

Dievans, Great to hear from you.  Will be glad when you have time to start posting again.  You always have such encouraging words to say and your workout reports are always inspiring.  Hang in there and we'll still be here when you settle into your new routine.

Today I broke the 140 mark!! I was 139.2. Just like Ohio45 said, it's encouraging to see even though I will probably go above the 140, it's always easier to come back down once you've been there.

CC1170: I agree with Dievans... if it is healthy food, maybe your body has needed the extra nourishment. I'm glad posting is helping you to be aware.  It's helped me tremendously.

Ohio45: I am so thrilled you got a new bike.  I know what you mean about fit... I had to take my first purchase back.  It hurt my lower back because it was too short.  Yes, your leg does need to be extended. You will get used to coming off of the seat.  I Love Biking!! I don't know why I waited so many years to start doing it.

Today: Rest day for tomorrows 5k race. I am excited about the race because Runner's World is one of the sponsers and so is Publix.  It's also for a good cause.

Tomorrow: Run 5k Race, eat healthy and try to keep track of calories for the weekend.  This has been so hard for me and I have to break the habit of not keeping track on the weekend.
Ohio45-Glad to hear you are biking. I wish I had a bike. I don't have anywhere near me that I can just hop on a bike and ride. I don't have a bike or a rack. Been thinking about investing in both. But I think I may be better off with the elliptical. I can use it year around and don't need my kids to be gone to use it.

I am finding myself pretty busy this week and have not been exercising as much as I have been the last month or so. It is killing me not to be able to. With so many appointments and obligations, it has been difficult.

I stayed within my goal yesterday. I consumed under 1400. Yea! My weight was at 131.8. Not up, so that was good. I went to Taco Bell and ate a Taco Salad w/o sour cream or the shell. So I was proud of myself. It can be tempting when faced with fatty mexican food. I love it! I ordered the chicken, but they made me a beef one. I decided to eat it anyway. I rarely eat beef anymore. It was good. Still it is a lot of calories even without the shell. I only used salsa and took off some of the cheese.

Next obstacle is this weekend. Weekends are difficult for all of us I think. So good luck to everyone, let's try to stay focused.

Tonia & Di- I have tried to stick to good choices when it comes to food, so even if calories are up I am balanced in prot/carbs/fat. So I guess at least I am taking care of my health even if I am unable to lose these stupid 10 lbs.

Talk to you all later!

I'm happy today.
I reached an intermediate goal for me. It doesn't seem much, but I lost 5 pounds since I started trying. It seems extremely difficult for me to put on weight or lose it. It just doesn't want to change, but it had actually been going up at a rate of about a pound every year since university.
The trend line has yet to catch up with it, but I haven't been this thin since *December 2006*! (I haven't been actually trying that long, just logging my weight.

The target is another 4 pounds, then maintaining.
Linden-Great work! Congrats on sticking to your goals! You motivated me to exercise this morning, even though I did not want to.

Last night was rough for me. I did have a slight setback and ate ice cream AND reese cups. I am posting this because I NEED to. NOT to bore you with my slip-ups. But this makes me  more accountable for what I put into my body and that in itself is punishment. Now I know why WW would be good for people, just having to show your face at meetings and having to get weighed.

I weighed in this morning at 133.8, I put on 2 lbs since yesterday. I am sure it is sodium mostly.

Well I will try to do better in the calorie department. You know it would be a lot easier if I didn't have kids. I do keep some snacks around for them. I have not been able to do away with all their junk food. It tempts me at night mostly. Even if something is a healthier alternative I can binge on that too.

I know my binges are emotionally driven or maybe even from boredom at night. If I just go to bed earlier I think I would be better off. Unfortunately I am not tired enough at 10pm to go to sleep. I am going to try to get myself into a better routine. I need to have some sort of wind down routine and possibly that would help. I have been stressing about some personal things lately and it is making weight loss almost impossible for me. I was ready to just quit altogether yesterday. It takes up SO much time from my life just to count calories, exercise, and think about it all the time.

Ok well that is enough for today.
Linden, great job on the 5 lbs. We rejoice with you.  Keep up the great work!! Your post was an encouragement.

Cc1170, Your honesty is encouraging and I agree with you about WW and the accountability factor.  That's why we are here for each other.  How old are your children?  I have a 21 year old and a 17 year old so it's  easier for me now.  We bought a bike rack and bikes. Our road isn't one that I want to get out and ride on so we put them on the rack or in the van and drive to our riding places.  Although, sometimes during the day after rush morning and afternoon, we can ride on our road. Also, early Sunday mornings are not too busy to ride our road if you go early.

I weighed 154 lbs. and couldn't get the motivation to lose any weight.  The focus was always the pounds until I decided that losing pounds was not a motivator for me.  I decided then to set an exercise goal.  My first was to run a 5K.  I was going through a lot of stress at the time and some real saddness over some things in my life.  The goal of the 5k kept my mind on something else.  I can't tell you the fulfillment I felt when I turned the last corner of my first race and saw the FINISH line banner.  Since then I've done countless 5Ks, two 10Ks, and three Triathlons.  I've seen women very determined not to let anything stop them in these races.  I've seen them run 1/2 marathons pushing baby strollers.  At the last Triathlon, one lady had 5 children in a baby stroller.  She didn't push them for the race but still she trained and completed a Triathlon with 5 children under 5 years old.  I think she had a very supportive spouce which was a tremendous help I am sure.

It's interesting that,  when I started focusing on weight loss for performance purposes instead of weight-loss for my looks, I dropped 2 dress sizes.

The race went great this morning.  It was a beautiful run in a state park in Central Florida.  I was 2nd Place in my age group with a time of 31:"something".  That wasn't my best time but I haven't been focusing my training on running since it has been so hot.  It was a great start for the running season.

I am trying to focus on writing everything down this weekend.  So far, so good.

Have a great day!
Hello everyone!

Linden, you are very lucky you don't gain weight too easily.  I have difficulty losing, but no difficulty gaining.  Congrats on your 5 pound goal!

cc1170, I share many of your feelings.  It can be very time consuming, but treat yourself well.  Do as much as you can without becoming overwhelmed.  If you try to do too much, than it is counterproductive.  If you don't count for a day or two, give yourself a break and congratulate yourself for exercising. I agree that the nighttime eating may have just become part of your routine.  It is almost like a habit you have to break by replacing it with something else.  I tried doing the taking a walk thing, but it didn't work for me.  Now I make my family phone calls in the evening instead of snacking.  Depending on what day it is, I will call my mom, sister, grandmother, or mother-in-law.  They all live in other towns and I like to keep in touch.  It is worth a try.

Today I was going to get up a little early and go running, but my husband needed a little 'attention'.  So I went to a fabulous class called Total Tone a bit later in the morning and I plan to mow the grass this afternoon.  I haven't been on the scale in over a week, but I plan to get on the thing on Wednesday morning.  I think my weight has been fairly stable.  I feel good and my clothes are not tight.

Well, I need to do a little more housework before I mow the lawn.  Also, with school starting, I may only write a few times during the week and more on the weekend.  We will see.....

Good luck!

Di
Tonia,

We must have been writing at the same time!  Congratulations on finishing second in your age group!  I love competing because it gives you such a feeling of empowerment.  Good for you! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your encouragement, folks. I must say that reading what you have written is what keeps me going. Once the pounds start dropping, the scales also help.

cc1170: My bf always keeps ice cream in the house, and I love the stuff. The only way I've found to resist eating a lot is to say "No, but I'll have a spoonful of yours" when he asks if I want any. It is hard if there are snacks in the house. My weight definitely went up when I moved in with my non-dieting bf. On the other hand, he got me into long distance walking (occasionally) so things are not all bad. I suspect kids are quite difficult to diet around. Good luck tomorrow!

Tonihayes: Wow, well done with the running and races! I've started running recently. I am doing the "couch to 5k" plan. I'll be really happy if I can go through with it and run the full 5k. I cannot believe I can walk over 20 miles a day, yet running for two minutes at a time for 3 miles leaves me huffing and puffing. I hope there is some improvement soon!

dievans:
Ahem. *Attention* burns up calories as well. CC says it is less strenuous than walking. I can't believe that!

Hey everybody thanks for your words of wisdom and encouragement. I think that I need to journal more and figure out why I am so self-destructive when it comes to weight loss.

I am pretty sure it is an oral fixation thing too. I used to smoke and now I don't. I chew A LOT of sugar free gum, but I still feel the need to chew on something. I also eat A LOT of baby carrots, none of this is really helping. I don't know what that is all about, but I know it is what leads me to eat at night.

I am amazed at all of you women and your marathons. I don't think I could do that at all. My children are still young. One has special needs and she requires a lot of supervision, she is 10. My youngest is 6. They are not very independent. When it comes to exercise I am lucky to get that hour in. There is NO way I could get out to run, I can't even get out for long walks. My husband works a ton of hours. About 62 per week. He is a car salesman. I rarely see him.  I have very little support at home.

I hope that as my children age. I will be able to get more involved with fitness and can keep myself in good shape. It is a great stress reliever, no doubt!

Well I didn't do great yesterday. Under 2000 calories though. It was good food, nothing really unhealthy. Even on my worst days, CC rates my food intake for the day at the lowest a B.

I did fit in my exercise, yea! The scale read 133.2 today down from 133.8 of yesterday. I am hoping for a better Sunday. I want to get out and do something outdoors with the girls, so that I don't feel so bad about not getting to exercise today.

I know this is long. But I find it TOO easy to talk here. It is helpful. So thanks for reading...

Have a wonderful day!
Good morning everyone!

Linden, I agree that the 'attention' burns calories and now that you brought it up, I don't feel so guilty for missing a cardio.  I too love icecream!  I try to limit myself to one cup on the weekends.  Sometimes that works for me.  I am the only one who adores icecream in our home, so it is here because of me :(

Ohio, great job with the 19 miles. Make sure you are sitting back far enough and don't lock your elbows. That helped me some. Don't be hesitant to keep going back to the store until it feels right.  I think the guys at my bike shop thought I was trying to pick one of them up, I was there so often! Good luck.

cc1170, I am glad to hear that writing helps.  Congratulate yourself! You are doing great things for your body and for your life.  Your girls will be little only once and do not feel guilty for a second about putting them first.  Any time you exercise and eat well, you are setting great examples for them.  Any time you spend time with them instead of exercising, you are also setting great examples for them.  It is a win-win.  We do what we can.  Feel good about it.  Good luck!

Today is so hot and humid that I plan to go to the gym for a very intense class called Body Attack.  If I get done with that and still have energy, I may do a 30 min abdominal class. I wanted to run, but it is just too humid. Yesterday went well with the calorie intake and I plan to stay under 1400 today as well.  One day at a time is the only way to go.  I plan to weigh on Wednesday, but I feel great.  My skin is clear, my energy is up, and my clothes fit well.  That is all great news for me.  I am still hoping to see a drop in the pounds, but if I don't I still have the other positives.

Good luck!

Di
Di-What a great attitude you have. I am glad things are going so well for you.

I went to a gorge here by my house. For those of you who don't know what that is. It is basically a valley with a creek that runs quite a ways. It is deep in the woods and it really is beautiful. Lots of small waterfalls, very peacefull. I went there with my husband and the girls. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon. We strolled a little thru the woods and the kids played in the creek.

That did wonders for my mood as of late. Just had some wonderful corn on the cob grown locally for dinner. Probably the last of the summer.

Hope everyone else had a great day!
