Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club

Quote  |  Reply
I am interested in finding others who have been struggling for a long time with losing the "last 10 lbs". .  I've been battling to lose 10 lbs for many years.  Actually, I've lost 10 in the last year but I needed to lose 20 a year ago (not just 10).

I run, bike and swim now and have been participating in running 5k's and triathlons.  I have firmed up but would like to wear a size 8 comfortably.  I may want to go on to a size 6 next.

I think that if I had some friends with the same goals, then I would stay motivated.  Maybe we can share ideas and recipes.

Let me know if you are out there and interested.

June 8-

Amy, thanks for the words of enablement.  I'll definately take a rain check on them since I already had my bath and herb tea.  I'm sure they'll come in handy after next week.

I went to bed at 8:30 pm ... woke up and couldn't go back to sleep.  I've been having trouble sleeping the past few nights... not sure if it's hunger or illness. Has anyone else had trouble sleeping when they cut their calorie consumption?

Did my 45 min walk and wimped-out on the upper body workout.

June 9: Will not exercise because I am going to be hard-pressed to get packed and on the road with 20 teenagers.

I did plan five group workouts for this next week... pilates, two walk/runs on the beach, tae-bo , and tennis.  Will also be playing volleyball and walking a lot.

Eugrrlll and Amy, Your posts from the 8th cracked me up!  I will use some of your stradegies on this trip.  Eugrrlll, 30 days of menus!!! You go Girl !!

Hope I have internet connection this week... If I don't post, you'll know what happened...

I will weigh before I leave and when I get back. I will make it my goal to lose a pound or at least maintain on my trip.

Dievans, I envy you for getting so much bike time... I haven't been able to lately and I'm having bike DTs.

Have a great weekend and week!
hello everyone,

Good day on 6/8 and today 6/9 I have a lot going on.  I am getting ready to leave for my brick workout with my training group.  15 mile bike, 3 mile run, and then immediately following, our group is participating in an ALS Walk.  I also have to go to HS graduation this afternoon and then make an appearance at two grad parties for my students.  So, busy day.  I still plan to stay within the 1400 cals, we'll see.

tonia,

I have been having trouble sleeping and I wasn't sure what it was either.  There have been a few nights I went to bed hungry, so that could be it.

Good luck!

Di
Weigh-in before my beach trip ( I'm not sure if taking 20 teenagers to the beach is supposed to be called a vacation...)

141.6 down -3.4 lbs. (I'm using 145 as a starting point because that is probably what I was on June 1st and it is my old "set point".

We'll see what happens on the trip.

Dievans, Hope you had a great brick workout.  I love bricks...

About the sleep, maybe our metabolism is higher that we think.  Does anyone think we may need more calories? Or, will our bodies adjust.

Take care everyone!!
I am more interested in losing my first 10 pounds (out of a total of 40) but would still like to join this forum if at all possible :)

I am new to healthy eating and would like to have some accountability and motivation and this seems to be the place for me!

I am 22 years old, 5'8", 174-178 lbs depending on the day.

I graduated highschool at 135ish and college life brought me to a 155. July 2006, I went skydiving and had a few injuries that led to me being very inactive (couldn't even walk- had a broken hand so couldn't use crutches for the first 8 weeks, etc) ps skydiving was amazing and totally worth it (!) however, the experience helped me gain approx 20 lbs as I am now in the 174-178 range with a BMI of 27.1 ie above the healthy range

I am doing a mix of weight watchers and counting my calories on here but may just use this because I like that this is an online resource with a community to help with information and encouragement.

As far as exercise, I enjoy rollerblading, bike riding, the elliptical and am starting to do weight training thanks to the info that I've read on this site. Originally, my thinking was cardio cardio cardio- why waste my time on muscle when really, I'd rather burn fat. Come to find out... both are needed.

I am just starting to get the hang of what all this expenditure and allocation thing... Based on my height, weight and activity level (I'm a sales rep on my feet 9-10 hours a day but other than that, not much activity other than my workouts) the number of cals that I need to "maintain" my current weight would be 2035. So in order to lose 2 lbs a week, I should either cut a thousand cals a day (obviously not recommended and not gonna happen) or burn an extra thousand a day (also, not going to happen) - I was thinking of doing a hybrid cut 500 a day - which would bring m to 1535ish and burn 500 day. I realize that i will not burn 500 day if i do 2 a days 3x a week but 1-1.5lbs a week is fine by me. I am mostly trying to cut out fast food, change my snacks from candy to veggies and create other healthy life changes like eating more fiber, protein, etc. sorry this is long and redundant for most but does this sound like I am on the right track as far as a healthy eating?

Typically for breakfast I will have oatmeal or cereal (such as golean crunch) with nonfat milk. for lunch, I eat turkey with mustard on 100% wheat bread or pita pocket bread with a cup of yogurt and dinner is where I don't really know what to do. Last night I had a boneless skinless chicken breast (on the foreman) with 1 cup of mixed veggies. Throughout the day, I eat a LOT of veggies and at least 1 fruit. I am replacing my coke with water and crystal lite or diet tea.

Any comments are appreciated...
tonia -- about eating sleeping and metabolism -- for me personally there is a huge relation between eating and problems with sleeping -- if i eat too early before i go to bed i wake up at 4 am cause i'm hungry, but if i eat too late than i will never fall asleep, so i guess everyone has to find their balance with that. and about metabolism, i'm greatly fascinated with yoga and associated stuff, like clean eating. those guys often advocate things that i find to extreme like eating two meals a day, each of the size of a cup, or raw food diet, and they actually promote lowering your metabolism claming people with lower metabolisms live longer and are healthier (provided youdo it the right way, not like getting insuline resistant or soemthing like that). i believe that, although i would never do anything extreme, but i think eating 1200-1500 cals for my whole life would be beneficial and personally i don't want to up my cals and am waiting till my body adjusts, but that's just my personal point of view.
hi melty and welcome :) you should definitelly stick to cc! your choices look great to me. that's awesome and what you chose for each meal is also healthy, your exercise is awesome and well all i can say -- GO GIRL ! you're definitelly on the right path, i'm sure you'll get more comments with may suggestions. stick to it :)
meltydawne,

Welcome to our world! We are trying to get some of those stubborn poiunds off, and whether they be your first or your last, doesn't matter.

Your choices look good as far as meals and exercise.... but you will get bored with that everyday, no?  What will you do when you just can't stomach another stupid turkey sandwich?  Also, I think your numbers (as far as intake/expenditure) seem accurate, but just don't get crazy if they don't come off like clockwork, exactly as planned.  Life sometimes gets in the way.  But don't get discouraged.  We're here, and if you stick with it, you will lose!!(PS I asked the question about the turkey sandwich because I just had one for lunch, and sometimes, I think UGH!! no more turkey!~~~ but then I reach for a chicken salad (not the kind w/mayo, the kind w/lettuce) or tuna, or lean ham (no ham for me, but maybe for you!)  Anyway, seems to me you're certainly off to a great start!

Good luck and PM or ask if you need support/encouragement!!

Hey everyone!

Still on track with goals.  Tonia, the brick yesterday was brutal, but worth it.  Today I biked 10 miles and did strength training for 20 min.  I am planning to stay within 1400 again.  I decided to make sure I save 100 calories for an evening snack of fruit or yogurt to see if that helps with the sleep.

Welcome Meltydawne!

Your plan looks great to me.  In the evening, I usually have fish.  Do you like salmon, shrimp, scallops, haddock?  You can purchase these items in the individual frozen portions and it is really easy to prepare on the grill.  (I use lemon juice to get the smell off the grill)Also, I enjoy making homemade vegetable soup and freezing it in dinner size portions.  I think it is wonderful that at 22 you have decided to get in shape in a healthy way.  So many people in your age group try to get a quick fix and endanger their health.  Congratulations!  Keep up the good work.

Death by Chocolate - and champagne - and chips -  and too much food!!

I confess, I was awful yesterday... I am doing better today.  We ended up doing the 65 miler this AM, and it was a blast... I am tired, but I can honestly say that it wasn't quite as bad as a marathon, but close.  I don't know how those people doing the 100 miles survived.

I am on track today, and back to my workouts tomorrow.

Dievans - glad to hear your brick went well...... great job!  When is your tri?

FYI - my beau can't sleep right if he's hungry.  He saves calories for a low fat graham cracker with a schmear of peanut butter on it (< 1 TBSP).. That sits in his belly nicely and lets him sleep.

Good day all! (I need to shower.... 65 miles make you smell funky)

A
Hi guys!

Amyb,

Congratulations on the 65 miler! That is incredible.  My tri is on 6/24 in York, PA.  This is only my second tri, so any advice you can offer would be great!

Today my goal is to swim for 45 minutes and work my core and stretch for 30 min. It is difficult to stay within my 1400 calories and be social.  Yesterday, I tried to always keep a bottle of water in my one hand and a napkin in the other.  This helped a little with people offering more food at the graduation parties.

I can't believe Wednesday is the day after tomorrow and we weigh in again.  That went fast!

Good luck!

Di
hey gals. you still here?
still alive (barely)  thought I would get up and run this AM, but it wasn't happening.  I think my body was still tired from Sunday bike ride.

Maybe a walk and a lift tonight.  Stayed within my calories yesterday...... Hopefully I can do that today, so my weigh in won't be a nightmare!

HAve a great day ladies!

Hey Ladies!

I really hope this 10 lbs forever club does not fizzle out.  I find it really motivating to read what others are doing and I feel a sense of accountability when I have to write in what I am doing.  Today I am off to a good start.  I ran 3 miles, and did an hour long Body Pump class.  I plan to stay within  1400 calories, so wish me luck.  I know I have the exercise down, but the eating is still quite a challenge.

Good luck!

Di
dievans,

for some reason, this thread doesn't come up in my profile anymore??

NO we won't let this fizzle, but I think toniahayes is OOT for the week, and I don't know where trixitrix went to....

Today I wanted to run, but the ride on Sunday curbed my motivation.  My beau went out  and when he got back, the first words out of his mouth,  "if I find the $^%&%(^$  who tied bricks to my sneakers I am going to get them!!"  He said his legs were still pretty whipped from the bike ride on Sunday.  I hope by this PM that I have enough in me for at least 3.  The Boilermaker is 3 /12 weeks away.  I ran a long one last week (7), but need to do an 8, 9, or 10 to really feel like I am okay.

When you say stay w/in 1400, do you mean minus the calories burned from running and the body pump class?  Do you use a HRM?  I do sometimes, and sometimes I go by the amounts listed in the activites section.  Just wondering how others calculated.

PS..................it's all about the food w/ me as well.  I can workout/exercise/be active all day, but I love to eat.  GIMME FOOD!

Hello everyone,

Well, the weekend was great for me. Went to the cottage, had some chips, wine, and lots lots more. Justified it with swimming and nature walking. But still not a great weekend.

Monday:

1350 calories + climbing stairs and 15 minutes of treadmill. Not much but it's something, right??!!

Tuesday:

aiming for 1200 calories:

breakfast - two toasts (110) with margarine (35) + added fibre (20) = 165

break - cherries = 100

Lunch - chicken (215) + green beans (75) + 7 crackers (80) = 370

break - might have a coffee = 50

Dinner - soup (140) +  pita bread (120) with cheese (120) and salsa (30) + added fibre (20) = 430

desert - cool whip 3 tbsp = 25

TOTAL 1140  so i'll add something to make it 1200
mcpchants,

looks good (well, not the cottage thing, but hey, we all gotta live!)

I saw your FOOD posts, but not your exercise post~~~~~ not trying to skip out on exercising, are you??????
hey, my cool whip shows 1 TBS = 25 calories, mcpchants... what kind are you using?
so ladies,  how come I have turned into an "internet potato?"  I haven't done any exercise in 2 days.  I have stayed within 1250 calories (my goal) and drank my water, but I just don't have any energy.  I am setting my alarm and going to work late just so I can hopefully run.  Any words of encouragement would help.  I seem to be in a funk.  I have a BD cake to make for Sunday, and my parents are coming into town, a big party at my place on Sunday--- 25 people, with--- you guessed it!  Bad food choices.

Is this why I am being "funky"?
It's so comforting to know I'm not the only one with this problem! I am 27, 5'2 123lbs. and my goal weight is 110lbs. I have been trying to lose these last 10-13 lbs. for over 2 years! My problem is consistency...I'll get really motivated for a week, then we'll go to the bar on the weekend or there will be some kind of party or social gathering and I'll blow it! I don't want to avoid going out, but the alcohol especially is VERY tempting! I know that I have the ability to lose this weight, I just have a hard time keeping on track. I think that's where alot of people fail. Consistency is key!!  In case anyone is wondering, I eat between 1400-1600 calories a day (any less than that I am STARVING). My exercise consists of  running 5-6 miles 3-4 days a week, walks with my son in the stroller a couple of times a week, playing with and chasing after my son (which all moms know burns alot of calories) and some light weight and strength training 2-3 times a week. I wear a size 8 comfortably right now and would like to get down to a 4, although I'd be happy in a comfortable 6.  I'd like to hear from everyone! Thank you all for your great posts!!!
A gal goes away for a few days and there are 99 messages on the board!  Congrats everyone - I can't wait to read your posts!

Okay, to sum up:

Weekend - ate okay but did not exercise enough.

Monday - met my calorie goal of 1400; did 30 pushups; walked the dog and moved the furniture out of the bedroom.

Tuesday - met my calorie goal of 1400; did not do pushups; walked the dog, painted the bedroom, and moved the furniture back in there.  Mother of pearl, my back is sore!

Wednesday, June 13:  calorie goal:  1300; 30 pushups, one workout.  And weigh in - I've decided to join the Wednesday weigh ins.

Good night, all!
