trying NOT to get my period - please help
I'm not a doctor, so don't quote me on this...but I've had friends whose doctor said it's ok to use birth control to skip your period once in a while. Please note that I said once in a while. I haven't heard of any doctor that suggests skipping it more than 3 months in a row. There is actually a pill that allows you to only have one every 3 months. But they don't suggest going longer than that.
i think it would be ok, if u did it for a week longer or so.. NOt sure about a couple of months...? ive done it before if i had a date planned adn i knw i was suppose to be getting my period that week.. just kept taking the pills and went to another pack.. Im on the ring now so all i have to do is leave it in a extra week... (which my doc said was ok)
You can do it, I did it, that was my first birth control I was ever on actually. ^^; But I was told I could do it by my doctor and I have PCOS and Endometreosis so... I don't know about healthy/normal people. If you prefer less periods you should try out Seasonale. I was also on that, period 4 times a year, once a season, for ~5 days and it wasn't that heavy. Could also try the Depo Provera shot and never get your period, but you gotta bleed for ~3 months first (breakthrough bleeding). I think Mirena(sp?) makes your periods insanely light, like spotting.
My gyno told me that I could take any bc pill and skip the placebo...up to 3 months, just like the seasonal....
...I never did it though, cuz I have a lot of issues with the pill, so I got and IUD, Mirena, inserted. I love it...I rarely get that time of the month, and it's a lot light and less days. I used to get it every other week for a full week, very very heavy....now maybe every 2 or 3 months for a day or two!
i'm not on yasmin, but i do it with my loestra pills. no side effects for me! i love being able to schedule my period
Yes, I'm on Yasmin, and my doctor prescribed it specifically to skip periods. I get 4 packs for a 3 months cycle. When I get to the end of the 4th pack, I take the week of sugar pills.
At first I had a lot of trouble with intermittent spotting, but now that I have taken it this way for more than a year, it is pretty nice. Only having a period once every 3 months is GREAT (and no, it's not super heavy like I would have expected). I just wish doctors had though to prescribe it this way earlier!
I am also on Yasmin, and have been for about 4 years. I recently got diagnosed with Endometreosis and my doctor told me to skip the placebo pills. It actually worked in the opposite way and I spotted for about 3 weeks! On and off bleeding with some cramps. I got freaked out and stopped, but I'm sure after a month or so it would have been fine as kaff mentioned above. Just give it some time.
i'm on yasmin too, and every year my doctor asks if i want monthly or 3 at a time to get seasonal periods, so it must be ok. you might get spotting though. not sure cus i've never done it. call me crazy but i like monthly periods. always check with your doctor first though.
also, there's a new generic version of yasmin called ocella. it costs about 1/3 or 1/4 of what yasmin costs. it works exactly like yasmin.
Try the Implanon pill. If you feel you are having no effects you can get the Implanon Implant after 3 months.
The Implant lasts 3 years and I haven't had my period since, apart from the first week of having it inserted. Some people may experience spotting or increased bleeding, but you'd find that out once you had tried the pill form first.
I went on it because I cannot bear the pain of my periods and the effects of another contraceptive pill wore off after 3 years of being of me taking them.
My doc said it's one of the most popular methods of contraception these days.
Hope that helps ![]()
I did this in order to avoid my period on a trip to Europe. My doctor said it's important that for a little bit you should use a condom because though the pill is still effective, it may be a little less so (unless you're married you should use a condom anyway) and also not to do it more than once in a row. Don't make a habit out of it. And if you spot a little bit don't be concerned.

Hmmm this interests me... can you feel it under your skin? I'm a bit squeamish to having foriegn objects floating/stuck in my body. :P
Well, I was aware of it for the 1st week. Only because I had a plaster on it though and the scar was healing. I've had it in for 2months now and I can't feel a thing.
If you push the insertion scar though, you can see the other end of the implant push against your skin.... it really creaps me out! Haha.
get Depo Provera. it's an injection (birth control). you get it every 3 months.
it stops your period entirely.
i personally dont take it because i dont like putting chemicals into my body that i dont need. i generally dislike steroids (birthcontrol pills. i call them steroids because they are, and most people are not used to thinking of them as such).
here where i live its about 20-30 dollars a month for the pill, versus 30 dollars every 3 months for the shot (depo provera).
you need a pregnancy test before they give you the shot for the first time.
wow, that's seriously unhealthy!
I don't care if doctors say it's okay! You watch, in ten years, they're going to find out that skipping periods on purpose causes all kinds of problems.
Your body needs to shed it's uterine lining every month! That's how you were designed! I know it's a 'hassle' to have your period, but honestly, it's a hassle to poop too, and if someone came out with a pill that would make it so you don't have to poop for three months, would you do that?? it's the same thing!

If you're on the pill anyway, skipping periods isn't any more unhealthy than not skipping them.
With my doctor's blessing, and for numerous reasons, I haven't had a period since 2001 due to being prescribed "continuous birth control".
There is NOTHING natural about having a period when on the pill. Your uterine lining does not build up if you are on the pill. The bleeding experienced during the placebo week on the pill is withdrawal bleeding from a sudden drop in hormone levels and not from a build up of uterine lining as someone not on the pill would have.
Here is a link to more info on continuous birth control:

There is also lots of information available on the Mayo Clinic site, WebMD, and so on.
There are risks associated with the pill certainly. But there is no medical reason to go through the withdrawal bleeding if you have already made the decision to be on the pill.

Actually there is a lot of research that shows that women who miss more of their periods get fewer reproductive cancers.
Researchers compare women who never miss a period i.e. nuns to women who do miss their periods i.e. women who have babies. The more babies you have (and the more you breastfeed) the lower your risk of reproductive cancers.
So it's actually not that unhealthy a situation.

In some cases it's actually healthier to skip the periods. Like with endometriosis- you're actually advised to skip as much as you can because you want to do everything in your power to thin the endometrial lining so you can have less pain and less scarring. So it's not just a hassle thing, it's a health thing.
OP- I'm not on Yasmin so I can't tell you specifically, but I have the Nuva Ring and when I skip there isn't increased side effects or anything like that- but you might get some spotting because your natural hormones are warring with the fake ones. My doctor recommended I work up to stacking three in a row by going back to back, then bleeding. Do that a couple of times and if that worked without spotting to go back to back to back. Your body is supposed to get used to it. (Mine hasn't but I've screwed something up every time.)
Note that I'm not a doctor so this is just my own experieince and advice. The only thing I can really reccomend is that unless you have spoken to your doctor and have something like endometriosis you want to have a period every 12 weeks so that the lining can shed.
Of course there are certain situations in which anything could be considered okay. We live in one big gray area.
I'm just sayin, if you can help it, doesn't sound like a good idea to halt a natural bodily function for convenience sake.
Personally, I DON'T CARE WHAT THE DOCTORS SAY! They're education has been heavily influenced by lobbyists, and they a lot of times don't even know it themselves! That's just a risk I care to take.
This whole Seasonale thing just doesn't sound too healthy to me, from a common sense perspective.
And gilt, there are just as many unsupportive studies as there are supportive ones; the supportive ones get more press and are usually funded by the pharmaceutical companies themselves.
Its okay, I have asked the doctor this before because I was going to mexico. He said its completely fine... however I didn't listen, Im kinda weary of the whole thing it doesnt make sense that that would be okay for you so...
AAARGGGGG!!! i dont get u people! feel HAPPY to be female, sexy and NORMAL!!
:( :( :(
*sigh* i haven't had a period all year! im LONGING to get it back!
sorry! i seriously needed a vent!
