Trying to get pregnant!

Quote  |  Reply
Hi

I only joined this site a couple of weeks ago and have already lost a few pounds.  I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can offer some suggestions?

I was already trying to lose weight, and then I injured my wrist. I was off work for a couple of months, and the pounds really piled on, so now i've got 24 pounds to lose!

My husband and I are trying for our first baby, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about dietry supplements that I should be taking, that won't add on weight, but will help with conception (I'm already taking folic acid). I am trying to eat a balanced diet, but this can be difficult at times.

I am also having problems with exercise - I am back at work, but I can't jump around too much, as it makes my wrist hurt. I work in sales and spend a lot of time in the car and having cups of tea with customers.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

The good news is that your wrist has nothing to do with conception. ;-)

Unless your health is really poor, there's not really any supplements that will make you or your husband more fertile. (Ethiopia does not have a declining birth rate.) A deficiency of zinc, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A or iron may negatively affect your fertility, but unless you're having a hard time conceiving, there's no real reason to take supplements for these minerals or vitamins because too many of them is not better.

The best thing you can do right now is what you are doing: become as healthy as you can. Take a general supplement with your folacin and add at least a thirty-minute walk per day to your lifestyle.

The walk won't actually affect your ability to conceive, but it WILL affect how you give birth. The more mobile your pelvis, the more easy your birth will be.

Happy conceiving. :-)
Chasteberry (also known as Vitex) is a dietary supplement that is said to help with fertility (and hormonal balance in general.  It is also made in a tea!

Thanks everso for your replies

I gave up smoking last August, and am now feeling much healthier. I will certainly try the dietry supplement.

Husband ok in sperm department. We have both have tests. I just wanted to make sure we're doing nothing wrong!

Thanks
We're thinking about trying to conceive this year as well. This would be our 3rd child and right now I weigh about as much as I did when I gave birth to the last one, so I want to try to get fit before the next pregnancy and then continue to exercise through the pregnancy as much as possible so maybe I won't end up as over-weight after the next one. I suggest you take a really good prenatal vitamin. Your doctor may be able to prescribe one for you as well, or at least recommend a good one to you. A prenatal vitamin shouldn't make you gain weight. I'm getting started with walking and yoga so I can just transition right into pregnancy and keep my workouts going. If you want any tips about trying to conceive, etc, check out www.twoweekwait.com. It's a forum for TTC women. Good luck!
