Trying to get pregnant but not ovulating

Quote  |  Reply

I was on the Pill for 10 years, up until 7 months ago, and was heavily into limiting my calories and over-exercising for 1.5 years before I went off the Pill (I have been trying to eat more and exercise less intensely, but have not gained back any weight).  I have been using Fertility Awareness (tracking AM body temp and cervical fluid) and there are no signs that I have even ovulated.  I have had blood tests from my doc and gyno and everything looks normal, but I still have had only minimal spotting and apparently no eggs for the past 7 months of "trying."  Has anyone in a similar situation taken longer than 7 months to start ovulating following going off the Pill and some major dieting? My docs say it's not normal to take that long, but there's nothing else apparently wrong... The only thing I can think of is that it is related to my eating and exercise habits.

Any support or suggestions is appreciated!

Let's see if I can make this short - no one wants a novel!!:-)

I had my first daughter in Jan. 2006, gained no weight during the pregnancy but stopped binge eating/drinking and started exercising so I delivered her at 168 pounds (I'm 5'8") which was the same as when I started. Through breastfeeding, walking, then walking too much and not always eating enough and/or restricting, I was 113 pounds by October 2006.

Stopped breastfeeding, no period. Gained 17 pounds, NO PERIOD. Progestin withdrawl, no period. Progesterone + Estrogen pills, no period. Progesterone + Estrogen pills, limited exercise, eating more fat, and taking CLOMID (lowest dose) after Estrogen and Progesterone pills produced a period. I used Answer's ovulation tests and confirmed ovulation the first time I used Clomid. I got pregnant with my second daughter on the second cycle.

They won't give you Clomid unless you gain enough weight to be a healthy weight when you're pregnant, but that will restart your ovaries. YOU MUST GAIN THE WEIGHT FIRST AND EAT ENOUGH FAT. It's definitely not responsible to get pregnant if you're at a low weight.

Talk about the estrogen priming and clomid - it can work! You probably have lower estrogen due to activity and body comp and you'll need something to stimulate your ovaries.

Thank you for the reply!  I am working on the weight thing--it's tough because I'm technically not underweight and have mentioned the concern to the docs though they haven't said it's an issue.  My husband is convinced this is the problem though.

Would I have to go to a fertility specialist to get something like Clomid or can a typical ob/gyn prescribe it?  I have been reading about it and am not sure I'm ready for that, but I also know I can't afford to go to a fertility specialist.  I have Kaiser, so I'm not sure how that might be different.

Thanks so much!

^^^^ What she said. I want to add that you should make sure you are fully recovered from you food and exercise issues (you don't say if it was a full blown ED).  Its not fair to bring a child into that situation.

My OB/GYN prescribed the clomid. Again, I was of a healthy BMI and that's the only reason. I remember the OB talking to the student (that's always a little unnerving) and saying that I was still very slender but healthy enough to carry a child.
