TTC can I get some help?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi I'm 30 and I weigh 212lbs. I was wondering what my HR should be to burn fat. I've only been doing the treadmill for the past 3 days.  Does anyone have any advice for someone trying to lost the maximum amount of weight in 3 months? I'll take any advice. (reason being that my husband and I are trying to conceive and I need to lose 30 - 40lbs by April 16) Please Help!

First of all, the Mayo Clinic has a tool on their website for calculating your target heart rate. It can be found here.

You shouldn't try to lose as much weight as quickly as possible. In order to lose it in a healthy way, you should do it by cutting calories and eating a low-fat diet. This is the ideal way to lose weight. Crash dieting is horrible! That being said, I think losing 30 pounds in 3 months is obtainable. You should plan to lose 1-2 pounds per week but during the first few weeks, you'll probably lose more than that.

You have to eat fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. You don't want to eat over 500 calories less than what you're burning, though. Your body will think it's being deprived of nutrients and actually hold onto the weight.

Cut out fast food, sweets, soda and unhealthy fats. Eat whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean-meats and good fats (olive oil, nuts, avacados, etc.). Remember, the occasional treat is okay as long as it's in moderation.

Utilize the tools on this website! The Calorie Target tool will figure up how many calories you should be eating in order to reach your goal weight. The Burn Meter tool will help you figure out how many calories you're burning each day based on how active you are. Come here to the forums when you have questions. There are very knowledgeable people here who can probably answer any question you have.

I am just scratching the tip of the iceberg here. I'm at work and don't have much time to write up a really lengthy post about how to lose weight.

Out of curiosity, why April 16th? If it's personal, feel free to tell me to mind my own business! :)

*Edited to correct spelling

take 220 and subtract your age (190). Thats your maximum heart. you might want to do something like maybe 65% of that which is 124. A more rudimentary way of assessing whether your heart rate is  is adequate when exercising is the talk sing test. When our heart rate increases the demand for oxygen increases to perfuse the heart muscles so we breath faster. If you can sing while on the treadmill your heart rate isnt high enough. If you can't hold a relaxed conversation while on the treadmill your heart rate might b too high. If you are on one of those new treadmills you can input your target heart rate. They usually ask for your age and gender. While you are running you can put your hands on the bards every so often. they usually have sensors that can assess the pulses in your fingertips and tell you what your heart rate is.

Also, if you decrease your normal caloric intake by 500 cals a day, you will lose 1-2 lbs a week depending on your metabolism. The average person will lose 1 lb in a week if they decrease their caloric intake by 3500 cal in one week (500 cals a day). if you are exercising while you are dieting, this will speed up your metabolism and you will start to lose 2 lbs a week.

April 16th is my target date cause i'm moving out of state.  And when we move we are going to a fertility and genetic doctor. The move date might me moved up to mid march hopefully not cause i really like my gym. Now i input on this site what i eat and it tells me my calories. Now my question is - if i eat 1600 calories a day, how many calories should i be burning to lose weight. I do 30 min on weigh loss on the bike and it's 100 calories that i'm losing there and then i walk for 60 min and lose 350 calories there. so when i go to the gym i lose a total of 450 calories. does that seem right?

Your burn counts dont seem right-- get a heart rate monitor (HRM). They are still inaccurate but closer.

And truly you arent going to lose 30 lbs by Apirl 13 without starving and overexercising-- neither of which is going to help with conceiving.  First things first-- start taking a prenatal now.  Work on getting a lot of good veggies and fruit into your diet (more veggies than fruit, of course).  If you have any symptoms of PCOS, you might want to try a lower carb diet (30-40 percent of your calories from carbs).  Excersise, adequate calories, and lots of water.  You can probably expect to lose about 15 lbs before April 15 at your weight ande calorie level.  1600 is good for now.

Are you charting?  CM and temp?  opk's?

no not charting or anything...... I just wanna know how may calories i need to burn a day to lose weight.
