you can't get muscle over the fat... fat is ontop of muscle.... cardio cardio cardio... if that doesnt work go to the doctor.

Hate to say it.... but cardio is the only way.  Try joining a class that's up-beat and fun.  Some sort of dance or kickboxing.  Working out with others can help to motivate you to keep the heart rate up... that's what you need.  For weight loss, it should be 5 times a day.

Good luck!

I am doing a lot of cardio these days and a little abs workout.

Should I stop doing the abs workout till the time I loose fat...???

I beg to differ, weight lifting is a more efficient way of burning fat than any type of cardio.

Cardio and abs workout is the only solution to reduce this stubborn stubborn stubborn belly fat.

Try to do different kind abs work out daily if possible .

Abs workout will do almost nothing to get rid of belly fat, no matter how many different kinds you do.

I have the same exact problem. Since I turned 35 (now I'm 40) this has been the hardest place to loose the weight. My abs look ok, and I am starting to see tone, and definition,  but I can't get rid of that one area by the belly button. It looks like I had a baby- which I didn't.

so you all say keep up with the cardio, and that will do the trick..

Yup this is spot on .... all exessive ab's workouts will do is make you even more bulky around the tummy, the ONLY way of getting rid of the tummy flab is to lower your body fat % all over by losing weight.

Do do wieght training on free weights to burn off calories rather than cardio because they will work your whole body, and your tummy is a good stabaliser so it beniifts from mosts forms of free weight to a lesser or great degree so they will get nice and tight without getting chunky and making you look wider.

Lower your fat and carb intake and lose weight because it doens't matter how nice your ab's look you wont see them hide beneith a layer of fat.

And be patient because tummy fat is always the last to go... trust me i know Tongue out

thanks! I think for me it is the patience thing..... One min. I think - wow, I am looking good, then an hour later I am thinking- what is up with this mirror? I have no patience. And the belly is right there not moving...

Let's be patient together. I am in the same boat. I have lost 5 inches off my hips and not a single inch of my waist. 18 pounds lost and not one single bit of it came off my tummy. I'm convinced that when I had both of my c-sections, they shoved the fat up to get it out of the way and forgot to spread it back out, hehe so now it's all right below my belly button. I have heard that belly fat is the last to go so i guess once i get rid of all my other fat then I will begin to make progress. Sure hope that happens soon, going to Florida in a month and really wanted it to be gone before I had to put on a swimsuit. Hang in there and keep plugging away at the cardio and calorie counting, hope we both see some progress soon. :)

at least you had an excuse and have a family to show for it. :) Me, just a dog and a belly. Did lots of cardio over the weekend. Also just joined a yoga class yesterday. the teacher said something interesting... If we visualize a part of our body moving or feeling a certain way, our body takes that as this is how it is. So in other words, if we visualize our stomaches flat, no fat and toned, then that is how it will look.

so now everytime I look in the mirror. .. I am going to say, wow, Look how flat it is! Look how toned I am, and be less hard on myself. Then I will close my eyes and picture my perfect size, my perfect flat stomach and in no time it will just appear. :)

ok - now totally demoralised.  I thought that by doing cardio and weight training 6x a week and by eating healthily and within my calorie target my abs exercises were going to be helping.  Now I hear you say I'm just going to end up looking bulkier????

Well if you are doing everything right (diet is number 1, then weights and cardio), you just don't need to spend lots of time targeting your abs. But if you are losing fat, even if you make your abs a little bigger by working them, a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat, so the net result will still be that you are slimmer.

So do the ab workouts if you want, but it's all the other things that are really gong to help. And if the ab workouts are taking the place of other more effective workouts (you are doing abs instead of compound exercises that engage the larger muscle groups), then you need to rethink priorities.

Oh, that's ok then. No, I haven't been doing abs exercises to the detriment of everything else.  The weight training has worked all the major muscle groups and abs work was just a part of it.  I know there's no such thing as spot reducing.

Thanks for the reply.
