Tuna tuna tuna
Hi all!
What is your suggestion on how to eat tuna from a can? I really don't like tuna at all, but it's the only fish I will eat at all. I usually just mix it w low fat mayo, pickle juice, etc to make a tuna spread, but I would like to find a way to use tuna without all the extra stuff if possible. Any ideas?
I love it with a little veganaise (or lite mayo if you're not down with vegan), a little salt and garlic powder and pepper or whatever you like, and like half a cup of corn. I mix it all together and eat it on plain rice cakes. LOVE IT!
But then again, I like tuna, so.
What I usually do is rinse the tuna and then put it right on top of a green salad. Then for the dressing I use seasoned rice vinegar. It may sound strange but it is delicious. Also, put the tune in a tortilla with a little cheese and toast it or microwave it quick and add veggies. And you have a tuna melt!
i mix mine with vinegar. i've also heard of people mixing it with cottage cheese as a lower calorie alternative to mayo :\
Tuna in the can...I eat it about once a week...
First open the lid and use it to squish the water out. This gives me about 1/2 a can empty to work with.
Next top it with a tsp of mayo, or sometimes mustard, and a healthy shot of hot sauce. Crunch/fluff it up with a spoon and eat, sometimes on a piece of toast.
I count it as 200 calories right out of the can - almost straight protein. I'm down to my last can of solid white albacore.
I love to mix a can of tuna in with a pot of pureed vegetable soup (butternut squash and mushroom, kale and squash, "fridge emptying soup" have all work out very tastily). But puree, before you add the tuna, and I added the light flaked kind.
I love tuna, I open the can, put it in a strainer and rinse it to rinse off some of the sodium. Then I mix it with whatever I want. Cottage cheese, mustard, salsa, pickles, olives. I eat it plain a lot in a pita with lettuce, tomato and hot peppers. I also love the canned salmon. Have you tried that? I did not think I would like it but like it better than the tuna.
I'm not a tuna person, either, vicki, but I love it just because it is low calorie, high protein, and easy to stash in your cabinets!
I find mayonaise more disgusting than anything I could ever imagine, so I mix tuna with barbecue sauce. I swear it's delicious.
I like to put it on toasted bread as a barbecue sandwich. If you add enough barbecue sauce, it loses the fishy flavor and it's just like chicken!!
Mix: tuna, chickpeas, celery, and, a little bit of mayo.
I have had the aforementioned combo without the mayo and it was just as good. :)
I love to eat tuna straight from the can. :D
This may sound weird, but you can crush pieces of unsalted crackers and mix with the tuna. Then eat everything from the can.
I eat tuna almost everyday...I never thought tuna would ever taste good without mayo before I started my diet...but I tried mixing a can of tuna (drained) with low-fat/skim yogurt and abit of mustard. If you're using a large can of tuna then you add in about 100-180g of skimmed yogurt, and 1-2 tablespoons of mustard, depends how 'mustard-y you want it'.
I add in abit of 'sweet n low' as well...about half a packet (it's too tangy without abit of sugar, so I really need just a little sweetness in there)....then I dice in some chilli peppers and tomato, you can also dice in cucumbers and onions too...so it tastes all tangy, sweet, hot, sour, creamy...very yummy and flavorful! I use this as a sandwich filling...extra yummy between two hot toasted slices of your favorite wholegrain bread. I love it!!
i add everything to tuna.. a little low-fat mayo, apples, and onions is really good- sounded so gross before i tried it but it's great. i've also mixed it with pesto and low-fat salad dressings. tuna is amazing :-)
I just had canned tuna tonight for dinner and I made a Nicoise Salad - it is an absolutely amazing combination... and I am willing to share it with you!

I actually dont really care for tuna either however, I like it several ways...with hot sauce and slice of onion & tomato, tuna melt on wheat, or in a tuna noodle casserole
I also eat tuna because it's good for you, not because I love it. But, Starkist has Tuna pouches that are preflavored, and they are actually really good. I get the sweet and spicy. I eat it plain or in a wrap. It's 70 calories per serving and there are 2 servings per pouch. Give it a try, you may actually enjoy eating tuna for a change.
Water packed tuna is gross. Try to find tuna in olive oil, then all you have to add is a little balsamic vinegar and put it over a salad. Delicious.
I can't stand the oil-packed variety. That said, what ever floats your boat is fine for you.
I like to (really really) drain a can of tuna, add half a cup of dry oats, and mix in an egg, then make tuna burgers on a lightly greased skillet. Great with cheese and ketchup. mustard, relish.
Also, just tuna on toast, topped with cheese and put under the broiler for a few minutes is good.

Way too much work. Just add some mayo(low fat) and dive in. Sometimes I'll whip up a quick sandwich using whole wheat bread.
It's great with jicama, carrots, celery, cilantro, tomatoes, and lime juice. Wheat thins or other crackers go nicely with this salad.
