Hi all!

What is your suggestion on how to eat tuna from a can? I really don't like tuna at all, but it's the only fish I will eat at all. I usually just mix it w low fat mayo, pickle juice, etc to make a tuna spread, but I would like to find a way to use tuna without all the extra stuff if possible. Any ideas?

I love adding some Mrs. Dash Seasoning Blend to canned tuna and then eat it with bread, crackers, or cucumber slices.

Have you tried canned salmon? I find it's yummier than canned tuna. There's also canned chicken and canned turkey, too.

I'm not a tuna person, either, vicki, but I love it just because it is low calorie, high protein, and easy to stash in your cabinets!

I find mayonaise more disgusting than anything I could ever imagine, so I mix tuna with barbecue sauce. I swear it's delicious.

I like to put it on toasted bread as a barbecue sandwich. If you add enough barbecue sauce, it loses the fishy flavor and it's just like chicken!!

I cant stand seafood, or fish, and canned fish gives me the creeps! haha but ive always wanted to eat tuna bc it is so low calorie and filling apparently. i hate mayonaise too though.

this sounds like a realyl good idea for em! im gonna try it!

I love tuna! I eat it usually 6 days a week for supper. I drain a can (packed in water) really well, then place it on my plate. I then add about 3 cups of steamed veggies (broccoli, onion and celery are my faves). Top with 1/3C salsa.

It's yummy, a lot of food, and only about 225 calories.

I use a little salt and pepper and some yellow mustard and eat it that way. it's pretty basic, but very tasty

I like BumbleBee Sensations. Comes in three flavors and I get two servings out of one can which brings the calories to 65 each.

I start with tuna packed in water, press the disconnected lid down on the tuna after opening and drain the water into my cat's bowl, then either eat straight or mix with a little reduced-fat or fat-free Miracle Whip (or Dijonnaise.... amazing stuff) and chopped up hardboiled egg whites, chopped up celery and celery seed.  Serve on lettuce.

I took a can of tuna, added two tbsp fage 0%, 1 tsp grey poupon, and cut up half an apple into it. Then I ate it on a bed of spinach. YUM! And kept me full for hours and hours!

Drained Tuna + Lettuces + Balsamic Vinaigrette + Tomato and Cucumber salad = win

I grew up eating tuna "straight" so I rarely add mayo to it (and only discovered that other people did that when I was in my teens).  Occasionally, I'll add a little diced onion and/or relish and/or black pepper, depending on my mood.  One year, I discovered tuna w/ tartar sauce when I was trying to use up some fridge food.  Now, that's a great combo!

It's also great in stir fries - just dump it in instead of having to chop up chicken, pork or beef.  It goes great with szechuan or any of the other spicy sauces, and is pretty good with black bean sauce or hoisin too.

And I like it in pasta salads (which, again, I grew up eating without mayo).  I like to combine the pasta, some tuna or turkey, some veg (tomato, onions, peppers, whatever I'm in the mood for) and toss with a herby vinaigrette dressing.  Yummy!

I absolutely love tuna - I probably eat it 4 or 5 times in any given week

I buy the Starkist canned Albacore tuna in water then drain all the water. I usually add barbecue sauce to it (sounds nasty, but it's so good) which almost makes it taste like pulled pork or I just add a splash of soy sauce and mix it together and eat it

I've also put it on bread with some cheese and vegatables and pressed it in the george foreman grill for a sandwich

How do you make it with pickles/pickle juice? That sounds yummy...

I hate tuna salad (hate mayo/Miracle Whip) but I'll put tuna into a simple marinara and put it over pasta.  Lately I've been melting a slice of 2% American cheese over "dry" tuna and toast for a tuna melt.

I am a canned tuna addicted (Cheap low calorie protein!)

anyway, I made a cool curried tuna salad the other day w/ a lil soy sauce, dijon mustard, curry powder, celery seed, chopped onions, carrots and celery and had it with some crackers. (Ok so thats not a quick easy recipe) but it does taste good.

Lemon pepper is good, so is cream dijon mustard (I like taht better than mayo)

Tuna + Hard Boiled Eggs + Red Onion + Olive Oil + Green Beans + Olives + Capers = HEAVEN!

...

Of just make a nicoise salad:

- Tuna, Hard Boiled Eggs, Artichoke Hearts, Butter Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Olives, Capers, Green Beans, Red Onion, Anchovies

I like to eat tuna mixed with cous cous with other bits and pieces added in eg sundried tomato, hardboiled egg, shredded carrot, pretty much whatever you have on hand and feel like adding.  Then you can top it off wiht a little bit of low cal dressing. Yum!

Oh man, tuna is phenomenal.  Sometimes I'll eat it plain, straight from the can, but it's really excellent with chopped celery, onion, red pepper, jalapenos, black pepper, shredded spinach, and a bit of mayo all mixed up together.  It's great eaten like that, or put on whole grain toast if you need the extra calories/fibre that day.  Very filling, makes two meals from one can for me that way.

Also, it's great mixed with salsa.

I've been eating tuna raw since I was a kid. It baffles everyone I meet because I am a terribly picky eater (like, I hate a lot of veggies, for example). Tuna is my version of salad. :)

LEMON PEPPER rocks with tuna in water. Just drain it and add until you are satisfied. Covers any icky tastes. Albacore tuna seems to have less dark meat, if you don't like that. If you don't like the moisture, buy it in a can and you can drain it pretty well. If you don't feel like carrying around a bottle of lemon pepper (I keep one at work and home--it just makes some things taste so much better) you can buy the pouches of pre-seasoned tuna with lemon pepper.

Also, as far as oil in tuna goes--I wouldn't recommend it if you are just eating it raw out of the can. Not very appetizing but I could see how some would put it on a salad. And I've heard the sunflower oil is better for you than the others.

Here's an easy, protein & fibre packed recipe I got from Oxygen Magazine's Glutes Special issue. This recipe was quick & easy for when you don't feel like cooking.

Tuna Bean Salad

  • 1 can white beans (I used navy beans), drained & rinsed
  • 1 can flaked white tuna, drained
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved, or 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt & pepper, to taste
  • (I might add celery salt and/or paprika and/or dill next time)

Combine all ingredients and toss. Serve on top of lettuce or spinach leaves. Makes 2 huge servings (~320 cals & 29 g protein).

The original recipe was for 4 servings, using 2 cans of tuna + 1 can beans. Next time, I might use less beans but it was quite beany, but I loved it. So much fibre.

It's great with jicama, carrots, celery, cilantro, tomatoes, and lime juice.  Wheat thins or other crackers go nicely with this salad.

sounds really good!!!maybe add heat "jalapenos" that's just me like hot!!

I love tuna from a can that's packed in OLIVE OIL! That way it serves as a protein sources AND a salad dressing - when I top mixed greens & other veggies with the can! It's delicious!

If you're not willing to BUY olive oil packed tuna for fear of calories (which shouldn't be the reason!!!) Take your canned tuna and put it atop a bed of greens...green beans...bell peppers...olives...capers...artichoke hearts...hard boiled eggs = but as a dressing you're going to want some olive oil & white wine vinegar - so you wonder: would you rather have the olive oil packed in the tuna as the dressing or make your own? ha ha!
