Tuna Salad Sandwich Variations?
I was just wondering if there were any low calorie variations. I was thinking instead of adding mayonnaise I could just add salsa and put it on some bread, or maybe just mustard, but I am not sure how they would taste? Has anyone tried that? Any other ideas?
That's so funny, I just had a tuna salad sandwich for lunch today!
I've always made it with tons of mayonnaise (duh). Today, I made it with fat-free sour cream and sweet pickle relish, put it on some whole wheat bread and viola! It was surprisingly good. I've never tried it with mustard, since I really don't like it.
I think you'll just have to play around with it and see what you create that you like.
i love a mediterranean version! drizzle with a little olive oil. chop up capers, sun-dried tomatoes and a couple of kalamata olives - its so tasty and i much prefer it to the mayo-laden version
I like to use a bit of greek yogurt instead of mayo. I also like to load up the veggies. I mix in shredded carrot and zucchini. I like to add chopped olives. I'll basically throw in anything crunchy that I have on hand.
i cut back the mayo and add lemon or lime juice, celery, green onion, cucumber if i'm going to use it all immediately (it goes mushy fast), pepper, and chilli powder.
non-fat mayo (I use miracle whip) is only 15 calories a tablespoon. I make tuna salad with 1 can tuna, 2 tbsp miracle whip, 1 tbsp mustard, and some chopped red onion. it's DELICIOUS.
no need to cut the mayo, just use lowcal versions :)
They've got a sugar-free pickle relish (NO calories!) now, which tastes great. I use this and three different types of mustard (djion, horseradish & honey mustard), plus a hard-boiled egg. I've used the Light Miracle Whip as well with good results. Chopped celery is also nice.
I like chopped cilantro and onion with fatfree mayo (works with canned salmon too).
I love 'mini' tuna salad sandwiches on cucumber slices instead of bread. Bonus: because the cucumber is so juicy, you can use less mayo. Usually I do a mix of mayo and honey mustard.
Mix it with non fat plain yogurt you can't tell the difference. Works for chicken salad to!
Before I became vegetarian, I used to mix canned light tuna with low-calorie Italian dressing. It became my favourite way to eat fish. ^^
hummus! It's really good with tuna!
And I like to use light mayo also. It's only 50 calorie for a tablespoon and I usually don't even use that much.

they didn't have plain but they did have vanilla... I'm going to try that tomorrow =)
I like mine w/ mayo, mustard, and pickle juice!! (no actual pickles though!!)
This AMAZING italian deli around the corner from me makes what they call "italian" tuna salad, and its basically just tuna with a little onion and celery mixed with salt, pepper, and lots of balsamic vinegar. I think they might put a little olive oil in too but if so its not that much because it is not oily at all. I've made it at home with just the balsamic vinegar and its tastes pretty much the same.
Most of the time when I make tuna, I usually add a tablespoon or two [to a whole 5-oz. can] of canola mayonnaise [no saturated fat], which is seriously an improvement considering I can remember adding so much mayonnaise it was almost soupy! Haha. To that, I like to add scallions and celery, or maybe some chopped grilled mushrooms or yellow onion. If I don't use mayonnaise, I like to add some light Italian dressing [sooooo good] and maybe a little bit of milk, or some steak sauce or barbecue sauce. Get creative! Tuna's pretty versatile, in my opinion, and you certainly don't have to use mayo or mayo substitutes.. or anything for that matter! haha.
It's so good with fat-free mayonnaise, a tsp of curry powder and chopped scallions.
Try mixing it with Ricotta cheese.. mmm... Love it.
I can't stray from the traditional mayo-based tuna salad, so for one 6-oz can of tuna I add 1 tbsp. of Hellman's Reduced Fat mayo (20 cal and 2g fat/tbsp) and about a half tablespoon of dill relish, or just the juice from a dill pickle jar. That gives it a little bit of a tangier flavor that the reduced fat mayo lacks vs. real mayo.
When I was a kid we used mustard instead of mayo about 1/2 the time with onions, celery, pickles, and chopped eggs. Another good option is to add apples and pecans or walnuts instead of pickles and eggs, use a little fat free miracle whip, just enough to make it stick together. I've also used fresh cucumbers instead of pickles. Add some celery seed and/or lemon pepper too.
Dijonnaise! Its like 5 calories a tsp; its a mixture of dijon mustard and mayonnaise. I think Hellman's makes it. Use it for a lot of sandwiches......more creamy than plain mustard.
