turkey burgers?

Quote  |  Reply
I just entered in the nurtient facts for one ground turkey patty

150 cals

22g protien

80mg cholesterol

and I can't remember the fat but I think it was only 8 grams

Well anyways it gave it a grade of D

I thought ground trukey was good for you since it is a lean protien so why the terrible grade?

Is 80 mg really high as far as cholesterol is concerned?

I could be wrong but I believe it has to do with the fat grams to calorie grams ratio

Fat contains 9 calories per gram so if you multiply 9 x 8 72 of the calories in the burger come from fat.

150 - 72 = 78 cal left

Protein contains 4 calories per gram 22 x 4= 88 calories

so if 88 cal come from the protein  and 78 cal come from fat - where are the rest of the calories going because that is already over 150 calories.

As for the Cholesterol:"The American Heart Association recommends eating no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day. But don't just look at the cholesterol contained in a food item. A product high in total fat or saturated fat can be an even bigger contributor to high blood cholesterol levels." retrieved from http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/healtheducation/ fastfoodfacts.html

Turkey is good for you, but you have to make sure it is still lean meat. Maybe double check the package?!

I never heard of that equation before, that is just what it said on the back of the package and it was 8g of fat.  So maybe these patties aren't made with lean enough turkey meat????

Oh well It is better then a regular burger and if I am balancing out everything else I am eating that day it should be fine.

I was just trying to get more protien into my meals since I don't eat any seafood and rarely ever eat red meat.  So I pretty much eat or order chicken all the time.

I was just surprised that is got a D.

Thanks for your help and input!

If you google calorie amounts in ....blank..... you will achieve the equation that I provided.

I also just completed a nutrition class for College and found out many different, and interesting, facts about calories and what each, protein, fat, and carb's, contain.

It is all a world of question when it comes to food.

I reccomend, if  you want to eat turkey, becuase I do too, is find the ground turkey BREAST in the store, that is lean all white meat, which contains much less fat than just turkey ground-

Good luck-

Try veggie burgers- the ORIGINAL Garden Burger! AWESOME! lettuce, tomato, low fat cheese and a bun! SO GOOD! all my kids even eat them and have no idea that they are eating vegetarian.

Thanks so much!

I will have to try a garden burger.  I have always wanted to try something like that.  I am not down with black beans but I know they make'em with other yummy veggies so I will have to give it a try!

Thanks!

I was like you. I thought ALL ground turkey was good. But there are some with less fat. That's what I buy now at WalMart. AND it's cheaper than ground beef now.  I pay $6 for a family pack of turkey, and it's $8 for the lean ground beef!

I too have thought about veggie burgers, but afraid to buy them!  I would hate to waste them if I didn't like it.

Ground sirloin is a better choice than ground turkey containing high percentage of dark meat and cholesterol.  To answer one of your question ABSOLUTELY 80 mg of cholesterol is bad, that's almost 27% of the maximum recommended allowance, which is why it got such a bad grade.  Next time look for Jenny-o lean ground turkey, it only has 120 calories and around half the cholesterol.
Thanks for the advice I didn't really notice that when I bought it and from now on I will definately check! Sometimes they really don't have as much variety on turkey so I will have to keep my eyes open.  Luckily I have been watching what else I have been eating and with the turkey burger included my chlosterol for the day was only 100-110 which is still ok.  But you are right since 80mg of that came from one patty!!!

Thanks again!
