Quote  |  Reply

ok so the turkey and ham my mom buys (yes im a teen) is from the deli and it is super thin. I don't know how many pieces is one ounce, or even what to call it on calorie count bc it doesn't have the calories listed since its from the deli...any help would be nice :)

You can type in the store name ie: Stop & Shop deli...or just try deli ham or deli turkey. It will tell you next to the item name if it is deli sliced or a whole ham/turkey. As for the ounce thing? I'm not quite sure..I heard a medium sized slice is 1 ounce. I could be very wrong!!

oh ok thanks :P

I get 10 calories per slice from my thin sliced deli ham.

oh ok thanks :) do you happen to know about the turkey? about how many cals per slice?

When you're mom first brings it home, look at how much she purchases (ie 1lb..) if it is a pound, divide it out into 4 equal parts.  That should be 4 ounces, which is about 2 servings.  Then you can count the slices to determine how many slices that is.

Or you can get a kitchen scale to weigh foods with.  They are probably available at Wal-Mart for $15-25.

If I can recall the turkey I had last week was 50 cals for 5-6 slices, but it was like paper thin slices.

Most deli turkey or ham is 30 cals/oz.  Deli roast beef is about 40 cals/oz.  Most places that slice meat have the nutrician information on the package - just ask them! :)

I got a food scale at Target for $6 that weighs up to 16 oz (1 pound) just for cases like this. You should try that, because no matter how you put it, my definition of a "medium" sized slice may be different than yours. For so long I heard that a "medium" potato was 160 calories, and I was basing my calorie count on what a "medium" potato looked like. Well, it turns out that when I got my food scale, a "medium" potato was a lot smaller than I thought. So a food scale would help. However, I recently had a dilemma like this because my school's dining hall lists "2.5 ounces" of deli meat turkey at 60 calories. They have slices individually wrapped at 3 slices each, and when I went to the food store over the weekend I saw that practically every packaged deli turkey had its serving size at 3 slices, 2.5 ounces, and approximately 60-75 calories. So you could use that as a base estimate.

oh ok yeah i should probably get a food scale. that seems to be the best option, but i will go estimate around the ballpark of these numbers everyone listed. thanks everyone.

Definitely get the food scale, like some others suggested. Mine was less than ten bucks, and its a huge help with htis kind of thing :)
