Twilight?
Did anyone else read that series? There's all this hype about it being "the new Harry Potter" and, although I enjoyed it, I didn't find Meyer's novels NEARLY as well-written or intriguing as Rowling's. It was kind of missing that magical, enticing touch, you know?
OMG, Laure, That is PRECISELY what I said to my friend when we were discussing HP vs Twilight.
Firstly, I enjoyed Twilight throughly, as I love the whole concept of Girl Meets Vampire. I was not impressed with the first book at all. I kept reading only because I cannot stop reading a series once I start. The second book, however, captured me. I enjoyed the STORY very much, but I completely agree with you regarding the author's writing style.
Twilight was a good story, to be sure. But Harry Potter is an epic tale, IMHO.
Exactly! I don't think she's as talented as Rowling by far. Off topic: I'm really excited to see what else Rowling comes out with! But anyways, you're right. The first Twilight book was any average novel, but the second two were great. The last book had many twists, but I wasn't overly impressed. I just wish Potter hadn't come to an end so soon ='[. By the time I was old enough to enjoy it (I just turned fifteen), the fifth book was already coming out =///
You're so right- all of my friends say that Meyer's is ten times better than Rowling's and I just can't accept that! I'm not saying that Meyer's isn't a good writer, but her books just aren't as... mind boggling as the HP books were. The HP books were just too great- they started and ended well. In every book, I was shocked and I could hardly ever predict what was going to happen next.
The second Meyer's book made me cry, which is my way of judging how great a book is. (It was a little sappy and mushy though.) Plus, in the last book, there was that one scene that made me never want to have kids, but surprisingly, that didn't stop me from liking them.
They're both great books, but Harry Potter just takes the cake! :)
I totally agree. Also, I don't really see how Bella compares as a protagonist to Harry, other than they both try to do what they think is right. Harry's got way more attitude and moxie than Bella, whom I personally think is rather wishywashy. Wasn't pretty much her only big rebellion the motorcycle? Just my thought.

... I never read the Twilight series, but I have to disagree with the suggestion that they ended well. Book Seven was OK, but I'm never felt it was the best she could have done. It felt forced at times. And just.. off at others.

Book Seven was, I admit, rushed at parts and a little ridiculous at times (-coughcough- that epilogue), but I liked all the new and different places she let us see through the eyes of Harry, like the Forest of Dean and Godric's Hollow, that we didn't get to really explore before.
And I'll pretty much never forgive her for killing Fred. :(
I agree. Although I enjoyed the final book, it could have been executed better. That story was entirely concerning Voldemort, so the magical element was sort of... missing. There was no more real happiness until the end or old pastimes (Quidditch, exploring, Hogsmeade, and just general trouble-making). I missed the childish charm of adventure and all those "forbidden" amusements that the old trio so reveled in. In my opinion, the books got better and better until the last one. It paled in comparison. The sixth one was the best, I think.
Overall, though, I would choose the Harry Potter books over the Twilight series any day.
Twilight just had a certain way to entice you in and get you wrapped up. It was a nice change like you guys have said, but meh. Harry Potter is still the best. I really don't have that pull to reread Twilight as I do with HP.
About the 7th book... Yeah it did seem rushed. And we couldn't really have that whole troublemaking or childish kind of fun, it was a dark book.
She could have expanded sooo much on the epilogue, didn't really seem her style.
Twilight was the worst book ever written. Main characters of vampire novels should NOT be wishy-washy, namby pamby little softies.
Harry Potter is definitely the best series I have ever read. I can reread them over and over.

Well, I'm not sure if it was the worst book ever written. For all of its shortcomings, it was still an interesting read. It just wasn't believable or, in my opinion, well-written. But I agree that it had too many weaknesses. Twilight fell way below the mark on every aspect of a fantasy novel when compared to Harry Potter. I don't understand how there are millions of people who think Twilight was the better read. I just don't see it. But I guess the literary world is now dominated by the whims of people who only want cheap thrills and cheesy romances. It sucks, but there are still some worthwhile books out there =/
hmmm... i am just starting Twilight ( a christmas gift from my 12 year old niece who is convinced that it will out shine all other books for me. i love her and i will read it, but i don't have a lot of faith in this particular 12 year old's taste in books) and i must admit, it is a pleasant diversion. i resisted HP because of the overwhelming support it was geting publicly, and felt the same way about Twilight... but i am begining to feel like my resistance of popular books tends to be misguided. there is a reason lots of people praise a book... usually becasue it is enjoyable.
If you haven't read it yet, here's my opinion...
The first one is worth it, it's very good with an exciting ending that leaves you satisfied.
As for books 2, 3, and 4...
WASTE of TIME.
Totally unstatisfying.
Wait for the movies come out and hope someone buys your ticket for you. Not worth it at ALL.
But the 1st one's good! haha...
I'd like to see the movie, but I'm kind of nervous that I'll be the only person above age 17 in the theater :)
More like epic older sister ;] Dude if you lived in Michigan we would totally go. Not that I would meet an online friend or anything... but it's the thought that counts =]
I haven't even seen the first one yet lol. My friends consider it sacrilege =P
I would absolutely go see it in the theater if I were 10 years younger :) As it is, I'll probably rent the dvd when it comes out. If I like it, I'll buy it. That guy who plays Edward (robert? I think he was the one who played Cedric Diggory in HP also) is really easy on the eyes.
ok,i read the first one, and did totally enjoy it (i don't think it compares to HP... totally different animals there...one is about the insecuritites and discoveries of a teanage girl, one is an adventure story) read the 2nd, reading about a depressed individual is less fun, but i made it through and am still looking forward to #3 (it is coming in the mail...) to fill the time, hubbie took me to Twighlight at the cheepie theater... i am embarrased to say i enjoyed it... in a very 12 year old girl way. it wasn't a good movie, and i felt bad for him as we left. but he is a good sport :)
and now, just so you all know, i am so totally wrapped up in #3 i had to leave it at home so i could get work done today. but what am i doing? i am online writing aobut it. i don't know exactly what the draw is, i think Meyers writes emotions very well, but i am alittle ashamed of how completly drawn in i am. still holding that these are a whole different type of book than HP.
